Why did they turn ME 2 into a shooter with RPG elements

I do not like or play shooter type games, Mass Effect KOTOR and Drage Age are RPG games first and shooters second. ME and the others had deeper character development and much better story lines. in ME 2 its seems the story is just a reason to get into another fight. I will continue to play it and maybe things will improve.

It is a great looking game and if you like shooters  I am sure you will enjoy it

ME was supposed to be an action-RPG, a hybrid of RPG and Shooter.

It's just the shooter aspect was so downplayed and poorly integrated that not much attention was paid to it.

Now that the combat has been improved and is much deeper and more meaningful, the shooter part was allowed to come to the forefront and be a partner to the RPG elements instead of it's red headed step sister in the attic.

Because that's what they wanted Mass Effect to be.

If you want a full real time classic RPG, play Dragon Age.

If don't like Action RPG's, that has more in the Action and less on the RPG, the Mass Effect may not be for you.

Again, BioWare is not selling out to the shooter crowd or they would have never made Dragon Age in such short order.

Because it makes it a whole lot better :).

And no, I'm not a long time shooter fan recently "converted" to RPGs - it's the other way around (Planescape: Torment remains at the top of my list of best RPGs ever).

This must be the twilight zone ... Everything is repeating itself ...

And mostly it's people that have NOT even registered a game. What a waste of bytes.

I dont understand this dislike for the game because its being viewed as more of a shooter. Is a great game not still a great game no matter what genre it is? Why do people limit themselves to only playing one kind of game and look with disdain on all other genres? Im not having a go at any one person in particular but it seems to be a theme on here.

My copy arrives tomorrow - lets just say that anybody on the road between me and home after work tomorrow had better watch out.

My only issue thus far with the new shooter emphasis (especially the idiotic requirement for ammo-clips), is that playing the Adept class is tedious. They suck wind at low levels in heavy combat. I've reloaded more times in ME 2 then I did in one play through of ME 1. That's annoying.

I've learned from my mistake. after I complte this play through with my continued character, I will never play a non-soldier class again.

You're right about the shooting being improves. You're wrong about it being partnered to the RPG elements. The RPG elements like loot are gone, your character skill choices have been watered down to the point of there being no real choices at all.

****** on stop complaining the forum is very depressing at the moment. I agree it is a shame alot of the RPG elements have been watered down but we have to accept it, it aint gonna change and the game is amazing. To make a game this good in just two years is outstanding!

I don't look to disdain to other genres.  I like action-RPG's.   They're my favourite.  However just recently I fell in love with Borderlands, which I bought because I thought it would be an ARPG, but turned out to be a shooter.  Either way, awesome game.

My point is, people aren't upset because it's just simply another type of game, they're upset because there's an obvious emotional connection to ME1, and ME2 was supposed to be an extension of that.  ME2 was supposed to make the bad things about ME1 better.  Instead they took a different approach, and seemingly redesigned major parts of the game.  Whether this is to appeal to a broader base or not, it's just not the same as ME1.

That being said, I'm enjoying it and will play it through.  But I'm still dissappointed.

I also don't understand the massive resistance from people when concerns are voiced.

"repeat"

"this again?"

Yes, this again. This is a FORUM. This is where ME2 players go to voice their likes/dislikes. Deal with it or don't read the boards.

No RPG elements? *facedesk* Ok so obviously the live streams of the game where I've seen lots of RPG elements still in the game are a fiction of my imagination huh?

The RPG elements(skills for the most part) have been watered down even further than ME1.

RPG elements?

I'm not being sarcastic or anything but that seems to be the root of the issue. All of you guys seem to have different thoughts on what exactly RPG elements are.

To me RPG = your character build determining his/her prowess in battle. So would ME2 be an rpg to me?

Last time I checked Forums mostly considered opening new topics on same subject over and over again as undesired behaviour.

In the end tho, the owners (moderators) will deal with it. And so should you.

Build?

Well that depends...do you mean a pre-built build...or a build you improve?

ME2 has very few skills to choose from.

ME1 was on the lite side of the RPG spectrum...ME2 is even more lite.

I am still enjoying the game...but I agree with those complaining about the RPG-element change(subtraction) found in ME2.

If you enjoy shooters and lite-rpg elements then you'll enjoy the game.

Some of the most respected games of all time are Shooter/RPG hybrids. Dues Ex and System Shock 2 come to mind. How does this even effect the quality of a game?
