I think it's possible. Probably some elven group that lived in the deep roads for years that any race or elven race have long forgotten. Plot wise would make sense and be possible I'm sure. They probably got more use to the red lyrium and dark spawn exposure than other races
Could have Dark Elves ever existed?

Oh I like that idea, I'm adding that to my head canon.

Well, true, but Dark Elves in Skryim aren't hated... I feel like their pitied somewhat.
Elves in general in Skyrim are disliked because the Nords drove them out (well the Snow Elves more so than any other race of Elves there), and after the war with the Aldmeri Dominion the Nords of Skyrim, particularly those who follow Ulfric and his train of thought dislike all Elves trodding on Skyrim soil. It doesn't matter that many had been living there since before the war. The Dark Elves have had a string of bad look after the eruption of Red Mountain, and some of their gods going silent on them. In general though it's not just the Dark Elves in Skyrim but all Elves in Skyrim. However that's only in Skyrim which is only a small region north of the much larger Cyrodiil. Unless the next Elder Scrolls game takes place in the same era we don't know if Elves elsweyr are treated nearly as badly (See what I did there?).
Still I don't see the Dunmer as down trodden, as they still have a home country? in Morrowind and back when their own empire expanded they developed outpost in other lands that still function as pretty much Dunmer populated areas. Not to mention all the Dunmer who have moved away into other lands and created pockets of Dunmer societies albeit most tend to adopt their new homelands cultures.

Thedas is too weak to handle the glorious Dunmer Master Race...

Those pathetic brats are nothing compared to the Thalmor...they would be racist even with the ancient elves of thedas.

The Ancient Elves should've been dark anyways like blue black shiny with Afro hairstyles. That would be cool as hell!
Hipster Elves?
African American 90's Elves?
OMG, no.

The ol' Curse of Ham story eh?That depends on context.
Skyrim's dark elves were cursed to have dark skin, but what makes it bad for them isn't that it doesn't conform to beauty standards.
Racism based on skin color isn't even a thing in that universe, so it would be illogical to look at it from a real world perspective.
Rather, it is a curse to the Dunmer because their gray skin represents a sinister appearance, especially combined with their red eyes.

Everyone seems to have different ideas about what 'dark elves' are. To some it's apparently just elves with dark skin and red eyes. I personally think it is their culture that makes them different from the other elves.
At least we know there are more elves than just the dalish and CE now. There could be far more ancient elves still left than just Solas, Felassan and guardians of the Well of Sorrows.
Elvhenan covered most of Thedas - there must have been many completely different elven cultures that we know nothing about yet. It's not impossible to imagine that there could have 'dark elves' as well. Maybe they are the ones who worshiped the Forgotten One's as their gods.

Only problem with this is that it continues the idea that other Elves including "Dark Elves" worship their most powerful mages, which would then stand to reason they had similar cultural ties to the Elves of that Solas harkon's to when he recounts the past. This just doesn't do it for me, my ideal "Dark Elves" would have no similarities to Solas and his culture of the past, and while the forgotten realms Drow are my favorite depiction both physical and culturally, as was mentioned certain aspects of their society already match Solas's Elves of the past. So for me it's more than just White haired jet black skinned elves with glowing red eyes, (physical qualities designed to make them stand in contrast to their surface dwelling counterparts, not simply because "The Evils". Thedas version would have to be physically different as well as culturally (something I've touched on already) different in order for me to buy into it, or else what would be the part of using the "Dark" Descriptor?

We currently have 4 known groups of the Elvhen in Thedas.
1) Dalish Elf.
2) City Elf.
3) Ancient Elf.
4) "Dark" Elf.
The "Dark" Elf category refers to the Elves who worship the Forgotten Ones. There exists one known such group in Tirashan. Leliana mentions this in the Trespasser DLC.

Relevant Quote:-
Members of one such cult on the western fringes of Orlais, in the Tirashan forest wore brilliant crimson vallaslin. Unlike the Dalish, who invoke the names of their gods in battle for aid, they were offering their enemies as a sacrifice.
So "Dark" Elf here refers to Ancient Elves who are, in all likelihood, evil because they supposedly offer their enemies as sacrifice to the Forgotten Ones, which none of the Ancient Elf or Dalish Elf who worship the Evanuris do.

SO DA has become skyrim 2.0 afterall? Now we have dark elves too?Very original.
Evil always comes into existence in any universe, Thedas or Elder Scrolls there is no exception, and such evil permeates in any if not all sentient races there in. The Elvhen are no exception, of course there would be elves that would branch out and worship "darker gods" how else would the other elves justify themselves as good? by comparison they would be the "good" elves compared to enemy sacrificing in the name of their dark gods "Dark Elves"
I'll see if the writers give them such a distinction if ever they pop up in a game, but it doesn't make this skyrim 2.0 at all since the majority of the Dark Elves you met in Skyrim were just people no more inherently evil than any Nord or Imperial.

One tiny detail about N7's African Elves crusade I find hilarious is how most modern depictions of Elves find their origins in tales of the Fair Folk; the Tuatha De Danann, Aes Sidhe and Lios Alfar of Celtic and Norse folklore. European folklore.
Given N7's rants, you would think he would either:
A focus on Rivain, Nevarra, and Antiva, nations with the highest percentages of people of color in Thedas and/or
B ask that mythical creatures of actuall African lore be introduced to Dragon Age.
Instead, N7 consistently champions changing DA Elves to have African features and culture. What have actions like this been called in the past? Oh yeah, cultural appropiation
.
To anyone who would take this too seriously, I have no problem with with anyone creating new stories of Elves with an African flavor, since theyre fantasy anyway. I just thought it was funny in N7's case. Especially when his Elven art lack the fey "otherness" of most Elves, and are basically just Black humans with pointed ears

*snip*
I'm so trying to avoid all conversations on that level, for all the reasons you mentioned, but more importantly to me, I don't see why such "cultural approximation" as you put needs to be implemented, unless its going to happen for every real world "culture" as well, which then bogs down the game with unnecessary pandering, that kind of thing need only apply to maybe if they feel its necessary humans.

@ animedreamer It was just a silly little jab at some of N7's rants and nothing to do with Dragon Age. But to be fair, those said rants have little to nothing to do with the actual game either

I am not excited by the idea of having Dark Elves (or any new "race") introduced into the world at this stage. Currently I don't feel like the ones we already have are all getting enough attention in terms of lore, and I would prefer to have a continued focus onto their stories ![]()

If anything I disagree, in fact im getting tired of hearing about what the "Good" Elves have lost, and how Dwarven society is stagnant and near extinction, while Humanity is the favored race that is perfect and making all the advancements, and the Qunari are just ass-hats from the far east or something.
