I'm about to go through an end game where I have no romance. This'll be the first time doing so and I was curious if there was anything that factored into which teammate gets injured/bids Shepard farewell if neither one is romanced?
It's the one you pick first, apparently
Worked for me at least.

Its the one you've taken on the most missions with you.

I tried that out last time, I had Liara with me for every mission, and then Ashley once she became available. I picked Ash first and it was her being injured, so I think it really is the first picked.

I took Ashley on the most missions. I chose James first then Ashley. It was Ashley who was injured. This is how its been for me for all my playthroughs where I was keeping track of how many missions I take the characters on. I found that it doesn't matter who is chosen first.

There's a hidden companion approval/preference in the game. The ones you take most during mission and the ones you talk to. Certain scenes have romance carry the most priority while some have static preference like James overriding most conversation. The evacuation scene where you have a squadmate convincing Joker to leave does count as one of this.

This is weird because I was just thinking about this yesterday. Is it the same for the scene with the Normandy landing on the planet in the EC? As in, if your Shep is not romanced, is it the squadmate you've taken on most missions? Because in my last playthrough this was James, and he bid my Shepard farewell after he was injured in the final mission and was the first to stand beside Joker on the new planet.
Aoibhealfae, I don't suppose you have a link where I can read more about the companion preference system?

If no romance, it will be the squadmate that has been taken on the most missions that will have dialogue with Shepard
The squadmate that tells Joker to leave will be a combination of how many missions and/or if the squadmate has been talked with
The two that come out of the Normandy are the ones that have been taken on the most missions and talked with. If all squadmates have been talked with equally, the number of missions taken will take priority
The character who holds the nameplate is based on who the player talked with the most. Taking a squadmate on missions has nothing to do with it since Samantha can hold the nameplate if no one was romanced or if the player romanced Miranda or Jack
If your ems is below 2000, the squadmate who has been taken on the most missions and/or talked with will be the one reaching out to Shepard before being killed. For more information about that, click on the link in my signature under Did you know?

I forgot to add that the one that is used the most in the game will be the one seen in the third flashback when Shepard chooses whatever ending only if no one was romanced.

There's a squad priority someone compiled.
But it was harder to know in the game unless you take note or something.
If you have Citadel DLC, its easier to gauge who is your highest preference. Like this is the first scene of "which comp you prefer".
In this playthrough I use Kaidan, Vega and EDI most. Vega pops up during the com conversation when you're fighting the mercs but he won't show up since I have Wrex. Liara is already at the living room

In this playthrough, I use everyone almost equally and Garrus pops up.
I remember getting Tali once.
Then the conversation who you take to fight the clone. Wrex always complains, next is the ones you bring the least.

Wrex and Vega tend to occupy the same spot though. (Also I use reshade mod so the pictures might look different)
Again, it depends on your playthrough and mission preference.
