I just got DAI and was playing DA and M2TW at the same time. And I had some thought … on maybe we could have a new build in DA4 that resembles Pavise or Genoese crossbowmen in M2TW.

So for those who are not familiar, Pavise crossbowmen are crossbowmen that carry tower shields. When they reload their crossbow, they would turn and have their shields facing the enemy for protection.

In history, pavise crossbowmen would also put their shield down to make a makeshift cover both for better aiming and for protection, which could look very similar to the cover mechanics in mass effect or SWTOR.

So, a pavise crossbowmen tree could focus on setting up cover, which sacrifices mobility for more damage and better frontal protection, looking similar to the marksman/sharpshooter tree for smuggler/agent in SWTOR, for those who are familiar.

Thing is, crossbows take a pretty long time to reload (20-30s probably), so you'd be spending the vast majority of combat standing behind a shield doing nothing. Doesn't really sound that fun to me.

I think a problem is that combat tends to be fast moving, for example in the hinterlands when dealing with the renegade templars who attack in two waves from different directions. A pavis crossbowman properly implemented would tend to lag behind the action. On the other hand I would be quite happy to use the one-hand crossbow from MP, which works well with a rogue who can move and fire at the same time.

True, but gameplay would be different; you wouldn't fire one shot every 1.5 seconds as a sniper either. Also Varric's Bianca is a repeating crossbow, even though they are not wide-spread in Thedas ... yet.

Yeah, it should be designed as a spec that could be very vulnerable when flanked if ever designed. Also if it's not a good option for players ... might be a decent option for enemy design...

I like the enemy option. It could make the gallant charge against opponents in "prepared" position even more like a suicide option. If the next game included fighting in towns this could add tactical complexity. "How many pavise crossbowmen does it take to block a street?" What fun if the party is shepherded into a large open square with all exits blocked and rooftops full of archers and mages.
