If Solas, the companion I'm carrying around, already has barrier, do I, as a rift mage, need to put a point into barrier as well? Is double barrier worth it or is 1 mage with barrier enough? Thank you!

The two passives below barrier are worth it just to get barrier IMHO.  But whether you need it or not, depends a lot on your skill level, your game difficulty, and how your tank is spec'd and geared.

Agreed.

FWIW, I always take it. My standard party is 1 tank warrior, 1 archer, and 2 mages. Both mages have Barrier, though I may disable it on one of them if they are constantly mana-starved.

I like having it on my Inquisitor mage for when I'm running low on health, but too far away from my support mage, or they just used it on someone else. I also like having it when the support mage is down and I'm the only one left to cast it. It's insurance, basically.

There does come a point, around level 16 or so, when the cost of the active slot outweighs its value. Then I dump it.
