Hi there,

Well I'm almost through my soldier playthrough (normal difficulty) using the shotgun and only the shotgun 100% of the time.  So far, I've managed to take down every single enemy (turrets, collossi, armatures, thresher maws, etc. on foot and using only the shotgun and whatever powers my squad mates have who are with me (i've been predominantly using Ashley and Tali).  The only missions I have left to do are:  Asteroid X-57, Pinnacle Station, Virmire and Race Against Time.  I"m sort of stuck thinking just how I'm going to go about taking out the turrets on Asteroid X-57 without using the mako's guns and yet still getting the mako close enough to them to lower their covers and then be able to take them out close in, on foot, with a shotgun (without getting killed).

Any ideas?

BTW:  I'm pretty proud of the fact that I've gotten this far and have only died once... so naturally, I'm hoping to keep that up through to the end.  I also haven't had to make any repairs to the mako yet (i.e. any incoming fire I've taken so far either while inside or outside the mako hasn't yet made it through the mako's shields)

ETA:  I worked it out on my own... managed to shoot out all the turrets with just the shotgun and keep the Mako undamaged as well.  Should be clear sailing now through the end of the game.

For the turrets on X57, it might be a good idea to bring Garrus. Because the rockets are extremely damaging, you will need someone who can use Sabotage repeatedly.

Garrus has Adrenaline Burst too, which means you could use Sabotage, then Overload, then Adrenaline Burst, then Sabotage and Overload again, so you can get up close using Immunity and hit the turrets with the shotgun. Hopefully this will allow the turrets to die quickly without even damaging you.

Well the ETA pretty much kills the advice i could give, but for future people who may read this thread:

You have Immunity. What are you worried about? Activate Immunity, run around with the shotgun, keep activating Immunity when it is off cooldown.

That's pretty much it.

It sounds like you are near the end of the game, so you should have your specialization by now (Shock Trooper or Commando, both which improve Immunity) and at least one Medical Exoskeleton armor mod, and some heavy armor, so you should be able to keep Immunity activated constantly.

As long as you move in a circular motion you should not get hit too often.

Seriously, Soldier is near freaking unkillable. Only a roomful of biotics or possibly rocket turrets could knock you down long enough to kill you.

Thank you both for the advice.

I wasn't quite so much worried about Shepard dying as I was about keeping the Mako unscathed.  I took Tali and Liara and used Tali's sabotage to kill the nearest turret.  Didn't really need my immunity (doing an NG+ so had top stats and was also trying to avoid using it because I was focusing more on a strategic playthrough about getting in close without taking a ton of fire).  The trick was finding places to hide the mako so that the turrets would activate and the mako wouldn't take so much fire from other surrounding turrets that it would be a smoking crater when I tried to return to it... turns out one of the best places to park it is right under a turret on the outside out of the line of the other turrets... that way, the fire from the others tended to add damage to the one I had sabotaged.  Another good hidey hole (once I got one turret down) is the blind side of the buildings.  The toughest set was the 3 with the blasting caps... but fortunately there are only 3 around that torch.

This playthrough has really taught me the value of sabotage.  I hadn't really used it all that much on previous playthroughs where I tended to use the SR to take down the turrets and such from a distance.  On Asteroid X-57, I've long had places (usually under the legs of the torch itself) near 1 of the turrets where I could park the mako in cover (but still activate the set)... and then stand in cover near the mako and take out every other turret with the SR.

Only death was by a thresher maw... just got a little too close.

There are some places to hide the Mako, you probably ended up finding them (near tops of hills, near the jets, near buildings or walls).  Also since rockets travel slowly, you can try to just strafe.

The most recent time I played this, I drove down the mountain from the grenade cache towards the last structure with the intent of hopping out of the Mako when it got right by a high wall (that a turret rides on top of), but interestingly when I jumped out, the Mako was launched up the hillside.  Dunno if a rocket hit did that or if it was just weirdness. Funny to see, not funny that I couldn't climb that particular mountain to get to it.

Ouch!  Must have been a glitch because I'm pretty sure I parked the mako just on the end of that same structure, sabotaged the turret across the compound and then took out the moving gun on top of us just by moving around while firing on foot.  It came pretty close though to getting through the mako's shields, but I got lucky.

Onto just planning the Trench Run now... going to somewhat interesting without using the mako's guns or an SR, but I'm pretty sure I can get through with enough shields on the mako to get to the relay.

Yeah it had to be a glitch either way because rocket impact wouldn't normally shoot it up a hill.
