The idea of Shepard becoming somewhat of a religious figure after the ME3 ending, especially the Control ending, has always really fascinated me.

I'm very in to theology & mythology in general. I'm nowhere near an expert but its a subject I know more than the average person about, I'd say. I literally just joined the forums to post this theory I've just had after completing my first Control playthrough.

Quite a few people have drew the comparison of Shepard to Jesus Christ and I definitely see it, but after completing the Control ending, I think the ancient pan-cultural myths of the Queen of Heaven who descends in to the underworld to take control of dark forces and sacrifices herself in the process becoming the 'world soul' reminds me more of Shepard. The Control ending reminded me very much of this myth. Look up 'Inanna and Ereshkigal', 'Inanna's Descent', etc.

I'd be really interested to hear anyone elses thoughts on the religious symbolism in the game & whether you agree with me that Shepard shares quite a few traits with this ancient goddess.

I would say that Shepard actually is closer to Heracles (the crucible is his pyre, Earth is his woman, and he ascends to godhood).

Or maybe Shepard is more like Muhammed (warlord, dream sequences like revelations, flight from Earth like flight from Mecca, entering the crucible and dying while using it = ascension into heaven).

Shepard is like Jesus... or more like how ultra-conservative Christians wish Jesus was (basically less of the compassion nonsense, replace that with guns and ass-kicking).

Or maybe the game is like Ragnarok.

Or maybe Shep's like Gilgamesh.

These religious stories have been reduced to tropes and are so prevalent in our culture that they probably influence things without us being aware of it.

So basically, not like Jesus at all.

"I'm just a soldier, Anderson." < -- That's my take

That's my take as well.  Media hypes him into a mythological being but he's really just a man.
