Considering that Bioware is being all secretive on the MEA details this time around, I thought we should see where everyone stands on this.

Would you want Bioware (or any gaming news site,) to reveal who can be romanced before the game releases? Or would you want to be surprised and find out by playing the game?

Personally speaking, when DAI came out I was 100% sure I was going to romance Cullen first and Solas on my 2nd playthrough, even before I got to know their characters. I know Bioware revealed beforehand which characters were romanceable, and I was wondering what everyone on here prefers.

This time around, I would love to see who I drift to as Ryder, without trying to initiate romance with someone I know will accept me. Finding out whom I can't romance would be interesting, if I find myself going towards someone who is not into my Ryder.

Somehow, when I saw the title of this thread, I thought that the discussion going to be about the option of "surprise romancing" someone when they bend over in the shower. The internet done fvcked me up on so many levels.

As to the question, I think they revealed too much about the cast and characters during the promotion of DAI, leaving so much less to explore and discover in the game (except for some of the plot twists in their backstories). I wish they'd go back to their previous methods of introducing companions to the game not through promotion, but smaller cutscenes or missions they are involved in before they're added to the party. Like how they did it with Mission, Zaalbar, Canderous or any other character in KotOR - each of them had their own scenes that estabilished them as a character and gave you a rough overview of what kind of person they are. Later on, you'd meet them during main quests and they'd join your party. The same with Wrex in ME. Prior their introductions ingame, you might have seen them on screenshots or trailers, but you did not have extensive background information available a year before release.

I'd want it to be a surprise, yes. I mean, I suppose I could just avoid the forum and basically anything and anywhere to do with ME:A if the romances get revealed so I can avoid knowing, but going on a black out, (especially early if the romances get revealed early), because the information revealed will be easy to come across, isn't ideal to me.

On the other hand

I know how important knowing is to some people, especially when they're planning their character; they don't want to waste a playthrough pursuing a romance who is unobtainable, and it being too late by then for them to go for someone else. Also, it can just be nice to know, gets them excited.

I'll try to go into the game not knowing, myself. I'm ok with being just friends with everyone anyway.

I prefer start the game knowing what romances are there. I would not have liked to flirt shamelessy with Dorian until he refused my female character, just to discover I have lost every chance with all the others LIs. I think, owever, that such revelations should happen just before the game is out, a week or so before, so people who don't want spoilers and don't want to know have a shorter "danger time"  :)

Taki, you win the internet for today...

I thought you were talking about ninjamance, OP.

But yeah, I could easily get behind not having a clue what the characters are, and who I can romance. I suppose going in blind would be interesting.

One of my favorite games of all time is Silent Hill 2. SH2 had multiple endings, and there were specific actions you needed to take during the story to make getting an ending more likely. However, all of this info is in the background where the player can't see it. Nowadays you could look up a guide and know exactly what you need to do, but if you went into the game blind you were surprised by what you got. Even better was when you found out your friend got a different ending than you. I wouldn't mind if Andromeda had something similar. You let your preference be known and then stand back and see which of your crew develops an attraction. There would be more emphasis on just being yourself, make the choices you really want to make, and see what happens.

Yet I'm not sure if most players are willing to give up that much control. They want to be able to look at the lineup beforehand and be able to say, "This is going to be my Cullen run" or "This is going to be my Cullen run #5." The way they slowly revealed the characters for Inquisition was fine. It helps promote the game and build anticipation. So long as they don't divulge too much about the characters. And so long as they are prepared for the backlash wave that happens when players find out their favorite isn't a romance option for their PC.

Well they're gonna be all surprises anyway because it's a brand new game as opposed to the next chapter of a trilogy.

I get that, I was referring to Bioware's reveal of all romanceable characters before DAI released, and whether or not that should be done for MEA.

I like to know who I can romance before I start the game. And of course I will have my preferences, but I will always wait to see what kind of characters they are before deciding who will be my LI.

I agree with Felya here, I don't want to lose my time with a character that won't accept mine in the end, like Dorian, and then miss my second romance choice because I've spent too much time on an hopeless one ~

Also DA is sometimes terrible about that, give you hope and the opportunity to flirt with plenty of characters around and finally let you totally down => example of Aveline :  a friend of mine really wanted to have her as his LI, especially after he saw that the "heart" replies were available. Big deception. I knew from the start it was a dead end romance but he didn't and asked me to not telling him anything about LI... well after that he told me "you should have warned me!"

I told that already on another thread but I like Dorian and Cassandra on DAI, you can use the flirt option on both, but none was available for my female character. I'm glad I knew it from the start or my deception would have been even worse (also I don't see the point to flirt with vivienne who is unavailbale for both gender).

so, yes, better to know.

I'm pretty much going to try to go into Mass Effect: Andromeda as blind as I can about things such as who'll be the companions including who'll be romanceable. I think it could be interesting.

Well, one surprise I'd like is for "someone" to hit on me. I could be the nerd type oblivious to social interactions around me and then BAM! Surprise.. which would be a double whammy if I was never even remotely interested in the character.

Here are some other surprises:

1. straight being approached by same gender.

2. Squad mates breakups

3. you being responsible for a breakup while gaining the partner.

4. local F/M alien misinterpreting your "advances"... and here you were trying to form an alliance. <== I like this

5. a variation of 4 is that your choices and attitude, unbeknown to you, turns a character to be a LI.

My interpretation of the studio's "romance revelations" is that this "foreplay" activity is a long and complex one. So, whenever you arrive back to the ship or "port" (alien hub ?), one must talk and talk and talk = Miranda's romance as an example. In her case, though, until a certain number of missions were completed, she was too busy. Will Bio use the same formula? Will a "loyalty" mission be necessary to get them interested?

Finally, I wonder if your "pursuits" will turn to naught precisely because of your attitude and choices made, way back in the game.

Prefer not to know.

Samara knocking me back.

Traynor knocking me back.

Mordin knocking me back as a broshep even though I wasn't asking.

All fun/funny moments. In Samara's case it made me desire the character even more. I'm a sucker for that kind of thing.

when i first saw the title, i thought you meant kinda like what serza said with the ninjamancing. bahahaha

but, interesting question. i don't really mind too much either way. but, if they do announce who the romance options are, i'd rather they not go into detail on that character's personality. makes it more fun to wait for, imo. personally, i'm trying to go in blind (to all the big stuff), so if they do announce all this stuff it's gonna be hard af to avoid everything. i say as i wait anxiously for new info.

I'd go for a mix... Bioware revealing a single possible romance for each gender of Ryder just ahead of release; and then leaving the others to be discovered during the game.  That way, those that are worried about ending up without any LI can just play it safe and go after the revealed LI.

It's not a huge deal to me either way, even if they reveal the romances beforehand you don't really know  them. Which is why I usually abandon my first playthrough 3/4 in and reroll.

Something needs to get the forum away from all these hair threads though, might as well be romance.

I looked it up when I started playing Inquisition and started to invest time into flirting/getting a romance, but I didn't actually want to find out as much about the romances before the game was released.

That said; I shouldn't have looked up who was romanceable and unfortunately that's a mistake I cannot undo. Romancing the wrong person or trying to romance someone who isn't interested in my Ryder, I can undo, so this time I prefer to, once again, get as little information about the romances as possible.

It could be interesting if you can try different romances in the same game before committing in one. You can know LI better and decide if you get along as a couple or not. And viceversa.

Well, it's a toss up for me. On the one hand, the idea of not knowing IS appealing... but on the other, I DO want to know because, as others have previously posted, what if I waste all my time flirting with a character who ultimately isn't interested, OR I end up romancing one character only to discover that further in the game, there's another character that I like better? Both ideas have their pros and cons.

But I do really love the idea of a potential LI flirting with you while you have the option to play as an oblivious Ryder. I think that could be quite funny, not to mention cute if the romance actually ends up continuing.

I'd rather know so I can plan my characters and playthroughs. When you don't know who to romance and how you often end up failing cause game has checks on romances like you have to choose all flirting options in order to romance to succeed (Mass Effect -> so if you aren't sure who to romance do you have to flirt with everyone all the time?) or it locks you from flirts and romance stuff cause you didn't flirt early enough (Fallout4) and relationship has moved on.
