I think this is one reason why i couldn't stand Anders. He tries to hit on you then gets pissy about it if you deny him (you gain Rivalry with him if i remember right).
The funny thing is that if you do romance him, he spends half of it telling you about how you shouldn't be romancing him.
I know how important knowing is to some people, especially when they're planning their character; they don't want to waste a playthrough pursuing a romance who is unobtainable, and it being too late by then for them to go for someone else.
So much this.
Gone are the days where I had the time to play a Bioware game 3 or 4 times and try out different romances or experiment with moral choices. Those were games that took 25-40 hours to play through. Now that Bioware focuses more on open world mechanics and offers 100+ hours, I wouldn't want to waste my time pursuing someone who isn't romanceable. I simply don't have the time for this and like to prepare beforehand (what is my character's personality, which companion could be a friend/love interest/rival/enemy etc.).

So far i am in favour of Bioware's new approach to information dissemination. As much as people like to claim it is no news that is provably false, what they are not doing is giving away the kitchen sink with their news. We don't need a lot of information about this game before it is released and the most important information will be second had info when we go to trusted reviewers and listen to their opinions. At least that is what players should do i am sure lots will pre order sight unseen and well that is fine but whatever the game is you got what you deserved be it good, great, bad or a pile of crap if you buy a game sight unseen I honestly think you shouldn't be allowed to complain.
I don't need to know who I can romance and who I can't. Playing the game will tell me and that honestly is the only time I actually needed to know.
The second I read "surprise romance", I was immediately reminded of the scene in Bruno where sacha baron cohen drops his pants in front of Ron Paul... gonna go with.. NO!
