And why do you think that? Personally, for me:

EDIT: Oh yeah, and which previously established characters that weren't companions do you want to return as companions?

Should return:

1) Dorian. I mean, we're finally going to Tevinter, so having an already established character be our guide or envoy seems like a logical inclusion. Plus, I don't trust Bioware to meet their mustache or wit quota without him

2) Isabela. Her story ties in nicely with the growing Qunari threat, and frankly I love the femme fatale trope. I also feel like she's one of the few companions who never got a satisfying ending or character arc, since she's still *just* a pirate and hasn't really elevated her station since DAO.

3 ) Sten. Same reason as Dorian, although I'm legitimately torn on this. On one hand, I think he'd fit in very nicely if the Imperium/Qunari is just a ploy like the Mage/Templar war, but on the other hand, I can't see how the good Arishok can return without him being a card carrying villain.

Should not:

1) Varric. Look, I love Varric, but we've had him for two full games + DLC already, and I feel like he's finally at a good place during the epilogue of Trespasser. So how about we let Varric do Varric from now on, because he's slowly become nigh untouchable, and I legitimately fear for the lives of characters in Bioware games or Joss Whedon shows when they become seemingly untouchable.

2) Morrigan. Can we just be done with her?

3 ) Blackwall. I know people aren't a huge fan of Thom, but I personally loved him and his story, and all his endings are just too good to mess up by bringing him back in DA4. With that said, if we ever get another Blight or game that heavily features Darkspawn, I'd love for Thom the Warden to return.

Don't care:

1) Shale. My reasoning for not including her is the same as my reason for including her, which is that she's a big ass golem.

2) The cast of Awakening. Anders, Nathaniel, Oghren, Sigrun, and Velanna are all great characters that I would actually love to see return or be acknowledged in some form, but at the same time I don't see how any of them can fit into the likely plot of DA4.

Become companions:

1) Scout Lace HardingTHE EFFING MESSENGER. He becomes a sentient darkspawn Robin Hood at the end of Awakening, which is easily the coolest epilogue of the best Dragon Age property, so how hasn't this guy returned yet? I mean, let me repeat: he's a sentient darkspawn Robin Hood. Bioware pls.

Should Return

- Sten

- Oghren (is he still alive or is he already hearing the calling?)

- Anders (if alive because I want to know what became of him and is he still having troubles with Justice)

- Isabela (seems like there might be interesting story for her and I want to confront her about the things we learned from her past in Those Who Speak)

- Cole

Should NOT Return:

- Morrigan

- Alistair

Don't Care:

- Varric

Become Companions:

- Briala

- Abelas

I am for a darkspawn disciple companion, but not the Messenger, since he can be killed, and is likely eventually killed within the decade between Awakening and Inquisition by Ferelden soldiers.

Returning companions should be any possible Divines, and any possible romances. So, Cassandra for sure.

I would like to see Cole return in an advisory role for the new protag.

I would also like Rainier to return if he was made a Warden, since Weisshaupt will likely be in play.

I agree that Varric should not return. He is just a stale character now. He doesn't have hardly any relevance, and now he's stolen the throne in Kirkwall.

Vivienne should not return unless Divine.

As for new companions who are from past games, so far I've only wanted to see Amethyne return as a shadowy elf in Tevinter trying to free her people. Depending on the story, some of the city elves sold to Tevinter would not have been recovered. I would think a Cousland monarch would ensure they were returned. But Amethyne would still want to free all elves from slavery. It would be cool to have her help the protag and (ex)Inquisitor, and it would provide an interesting dynamic against the backdrop of Solas looking to restore the elvhen. She could have a conflict between helping Solas or opposing him.

As for other returning characters, not necessarily as companions, Velanna, if she lives, as well as Seranni.

And of course the Hero of Ferelden should return as an NPC at Weisshaupt. Same with the Champion.

Should return:

- Shale. She said she's going to Tevinter to learn more about regaining her former mortal body

- Sten (I mean the Arishok), provided he's alive and regained his honor by finding his sword

- Dorian, although not as a party member but maybe as an ally or advisor

- Maeveris Tilani, as she's an ally of Dorian

- Calpernia, as either a villain, ally or temporary party member (she had so much potential in DAI, too bad they used her in like 3 cutscenes)

Should not return:

- Leliana, she's been given way too much screentime already and there is only so much retcon in fate and personailty that a character can endure

- Fenris, he just feels overly out of place for this series

- Cole. I just could not get to like him as underdeveloped as he was as a character

Might return:

- Isabela, though she probably wouldn't really go to Tevinter as she does not deal with slavers and we'd need a really good reason to keep her on land

- Iron Bull, if he's still a mercenary and/or Dorian's lover

- Josephine in a minor role, as a visiting diplomat

- Tallis, she could play a role in the qunari storyline

Companion:

- Harding, though I'd also like a more traditional, beared axe-wielding dwarf in the party

- Bethany Hawke, either as a Grey Warden or a fugitive mage. I really liked her in DA2.

- Dog (not that dog, but a new one)

Should Return: Finn/Ariane. And they should be obviously in love but haven't told each other yet. And their personal quests should involve hooking them up.

Should not Return: Varric. Not because I dislike him, but because he's been in two games now and has a city to run.

Yes,Finn and sweet Ariane the  two love birds. That would be a optional fun quest but,how to fit them in?

Maybe helping Soris find his wife that was taken in slavery?

Another of these threads?

Briala love interest for a male Elf.

I fear you're in for disappointment there. Briala bats for the other team. And she already has her BAE.

Should come back and will:
Dorian: not sure he'll be companion, but as a member of Tevinter's ruling class, he's going to be important.
Iron Bull: If he lives, his story is entwined with Dorian's.
Fenris: Has unfinished business in Tevinter.

Isabella: Has unfinished business with the Qunari.
Cullen: If he's alive and not on lyrium, promises "to pick up his blade again if it's ever needed."
Sera: she can go anywhere.

Cole: can go anywhere, even in the Fade.

Josephine: As head of a major trading family, is going to do business with Tevinter.

Heads of State (will be mentioned but not companions)
Either Gaspard or Celene of Orlais

King Alistair and/or Queen Anora of Fereldan

Varric the Vicount of Kirkwall

Zevran the leader of the Antivan Crows

Sebastian King of Starkhaven

Divine Victoria (whoever she is)

Sten the Arishok

Characters who I wish would just be done already

Morrigan. Really, it's been ten years now and we still have no idea what she's really up to. It's time for us to get some real answers, especially since it seems like Solas has taken Flemeth out of the game. Enough cryptic important-sounding nonsense, thank you.

As party members. They come as a warrior/mage duo.

If your question is "how do we get them involved," we'd need to know more about DA4's hero and story to answer that question.

I like all the characters from every game for the most part, so I can't really say I don't want to see this character or that character.

If I have to pick a few that I'm tired of seeing or hearing it would be these:

Cole
Varric (love Varric but I don't need to see his hairy chest for a third time)
Vivienne

....and the whole Templar/Mage story arc(s). Sick to death of it. We get it, they don't get along and there's always problems. Enough already.

If I have to pick three that I definitely want to see again, it would be these:

Iron Bull
Sera (yes I'm a fan)
Dorian

I like Cassandra too. As far as older games go, again I don't mind characters showing up if there is a good reason for it. I felt Hawke was shoe horned into DAI (just my opinion) and I didn't think Morrigan really fit into DA:I either although at least she had a more interesting reason for being there. Again just my opinion.

There are certainly plenty of characters I liked from the series that I don't think should return for a variety of reasons.  And characters I don't really like that I could see returning.

Dorian I liked as a character and he could nicely tie into anything tevinter so he makes sense.

I don't like Sten but he would make sense if as expected we tangle with the Qunari.

Isabela could be included if they come up with a solid reason why she is there as in what stake she has in the game.

We all know old baldy Solas will be back.

Leliana is popular but I'd like to close the door on her story.

I liked Shale a lot and there could easily be some kind of tie in.

I like Varric and could see him back only if there is a sig bit of dwarven content as in Kal sharock type stuff.

I don;t really want any other DAI characters to return even though I'd like more closure on their stories.

Should Return:

Dorian:  Because Tevinter, of course.  Not as a companion, but as an important NPC.  He is alive in everyone's playthru and canonically becomes a magister no matter what.

Solas:  As an antagonist.  See Trespasser for the reason why  ;)

Don't Care:

Iron Bull:  It's less important that he return.  And he can be dead.  But he is also potentially in a relationship with Dorian.  So as such, a cameo from him would not be amiss.

Should (potentially) Become companions:

Lace Harding:  A link to the Inquisition is probably going to happen.  And Harding is a natural choice.  She proved to be popular, she's alive in everyone's world-state, and as of the end of Trespasser, she's part of the inner circle (she and Charter replace Leliana)  As such she should either become a companion or an important NPC as the player's link to the Inquisition

Should not:

Anyone else.  Seriously, I want as little baggage as possible between games.  This is as much as I think is reasonable.  I know we all like the characters, but let them rest, please.

return

Isabela

Dorian

Cassandra

Aveline

Flemeth - at least I like to see her return

Meredith - yeah I know. She's dead. Still like to see her in another game since she's my favorite character in DA2

Josephine

Celene as a companion. Yeah. I doubt that would happen

Harding

Sigrun

Dagna

not return

Leliana - I don't see her returning, but its possible

Morrigan - I guess would depend on if she drank from the well and if her mother is in the next game

all the others that I didn't mention

I assume Solas isn't in consideration for any of this, since we know he's coming back. So:

Should Return:

Dorian - If we're going to Tevinter, he's an obvious point of connection between DAI and DA4. I'd personally rather see him as an advisor/important NPC than as a companion.

The Stenishok - My heart is going to break if we have to fight him. Especially in the world states where he was my Warden's kadan.

Fenris - But only in the world states where he's alive. He could have a quest like Zevran in DA2, only with slavers instead of Crows. In world states where he was handed back to Danarius, he should have a cameo as a silent slave, just to twist the knife.

Should Not Return:

Varric - I agree with a bunch of people above me in the thread. Varric is one of my favourites, but he should retire from adventuring and stick to ruling Kirkwall and writing books. I expect codex entry updates on what he's doing, though!

Aveline - I can't think of a reason she'd want to leave Kirkwall to come to Tevinter. She should stay at home and help Varric keep the chaos down to a dull roar.

Cullen - I know he was never an actual companion, but he's been in three games. Let him retire honorably.

Don't Care:

Um, everyone else? I wouldn't mind seeing any of the other companions show up if there was a good place for them in the story, but I'm not going object to not seeing them, either.

Should Become A Companion:

Lace Harding - The obvious answer, and the correct one! Lace Harding for companion and first dwarf romance! (If I have my way, she'll be followed approximately ten minutes later by a new dwarf companion who is our second dwarf romance.)

Maevaris Tilani - We're going to Tevinter, we need a Magister on the team, and Dorian already had his turn at being a companion. She can leave him in charge of the Lucerni while she adventures with us!

Calpernia - There must be a reason we never saw a body. Hopefully it's because she's destined for companionhood.

Should Return:
Dorian
Scout Harding
Morrigan/Flemeth
Fenris
Solas
Carver/Bethany(ugh, I hate her so much.)
Sten
Calpernia
Isabela
Iron Bull
- The rest should be New Blood. All these characters have some business to be up north away from southern thedas and could contribute to the story.

Should Not:
Anyone else who has no purpose being in the north.

Should

Dorian - Dorian is defiantly coming back, so not much to say other than he seems like he'll be really relevant in the next game.

Morrigan - I know many people are tired of her, but to me her story doesn't seem quite done yet especially because she could have drank from the well(she did in my canon) and she's flemeth's daughter. I remember in the game keiran said something like she's the "inheritor" or something like that, So I don't think they're quite done with her yet.

Merrill - I would love to see merrill in tevinter and really get her perspective on things. I found myself wondering what it would of been like had she been in inquisition with the whole dread wolf revelation and recovering elven history stuff. Also they never really explained what happened if she kept the eluvian in da2.

Calpernia - I'm pretty much positive shes gonna be in the next game as a companion or some significant npc. I've never had her in any of my playthroughs so far because I've always did hushed whispers but i did see her story arc on youtube and i fell in love with her character. I Really hope she's a romance option as well  .
Sten - Since he can be the arishok depending on choices and were gonna have to deal with the qunari it makes sense for him to show up.

Shouldn't

Varric - I LOVE varric he's my hawke(s) best friend after all but I wouldn't want him there unless he had some story relevance or we were playing as hawke again. It just felt very different with him and the inquisitor. I doubt he'll be back though, his epilogue slides seems to imply he's staying in kirkwall.

Vivienne - Never wanna see that woman again, Unless she's relevant to the story and/or I can somehow get rid of her.

Don't Care

Fenris - I don't really like fenris much at all but I wouldn't be surprised if he shows up either. It doesn't matter if he does or doesn't but if he does, I really don't wanna put up with his brooding again.

Leilana - Wouldn't mind if she showed up considering she can still be our spymaster but I don't mind either way.

Scout Harding - Shes really adorable It would be cool if she returned but again doesn't matter either way.

Overall Id mostly prefer to have new faces rather than a ton of returning companions/npc's unless their important to the plot.

I agree with DA2 Anders and Fenris, but what's wrong with the Iron Bull? That is, outside of his sudden yet inevitable betrayal.

I don't believe he is a good character. His dialogue makes me cringe in how amateurish it is, and he represents a very silly change in what the Qunari are. His betrayal was the best part of his story arc, bringing back some semblance of what it is to be Qunari.

Freddie Prinze is good though, hopefully they can get him another part when they retcon out Iron Bull as a weird hallucination brought on by the anchor.
