Three words:  Crowd Control Technology

From EA Conference:

EA’s Executive Vice President Patrick Söderlund also highlighted some of the technical details in his presentation. He said that the developer has adopted a crowd technology which was developed for for Rory McIlroy PGA Tour.

Unfortunately, this may be discouraging.

"...RPGs continues to grow and break beyond what was the core gamer audience."

The above may indicate that Bio is dumbing down the game play to make it more accessible to casual gamers.

I'm worried with MEA.

First the large tyres and now they're going to make a golf planet in Andromeda? They don't know the universe lore? Aliens don't play golf in Andromeda.

Dammit EAWare, always dumbing down the games i love for the casuals.

I hate EA, I hate Bioware and i hate the world.

I agree with the OP. There is no reason why NPCs should appear like wax statues. Technically there are no barriers to make them feel more alive.

Here's a game that makes fun of it:

Seriously, that same game can make NPCs react to what's going on around them:

That was a game from 2012, released on XB360, PS3, PC and Mac. Not perfect, but with current tech that could sure be improved upon. The creator of this video wanted to show how crowds behave in the game. Looks good to me.

At least its world feels alive.

Can we please stop with the lame DA references? Scanning planets on ME2 was more fun than the whole series.

As for npcs, i thought the Trilogy did a wonderful job on last gen and look forward to what they come up with for andromeda.

Solution = skip the references.

I could keep going actually. I don't like a lot of things about DAI.

But I won't derail on that. You're right that allies should attack. I don't know why they wouldn't. It seems pretty trivial. But I don't know how their engine works. I know it's a simple flag in a Bethesda game at least.

I seem to recall some instances where your allies did attack enemies.  Specifically the allies on the Storm Coast you can recruit will fight Red Templars, Darkspawn, or random monsters.  I think also your allies in the Jaws of Hakkon DLC.  Part of the problem is the "circle of engagement" is pretty small so if allies and enemies do not impinge upon each others' area they just ignore one another...and only certain allies seem to do it.  (Note: This is in no way me defending or justifying DAI as I consider it a pretty vanilla game making poor use of open world environments.)

Generally, I agree with the sentiments of this thread.  CDPR made effective use of their NPC's to bring the world alive.  I think the reason Bioware's companions end up feeling so interesting and authentic (mostly) is because of the apparent emphasis on attention to detail.  I would like them to extend this philosophy to other aspects of the game such as NPC's behaving appropriate to the environment.  If say we visit a futuristic metropolis it should have the oppressive sense of masses of people crammed into it...frantically hustling about from one place to another.  Basically, NYC around close of business on a Friday.  Generally it's one of the flaws with the Citadel in much of the series.  It's empty, it's static, and while wondrous to contemplate, it doesn't feel genuine.  I know it's difficult...and there's limited resources, but they need to at least make an effort to make the world's they create come alive.

No, bro.

It's worse than that.

They gave the Asari eyebrows.

And brought back the Mako.

After seeing games like Assasin's creed liberation and GTA V, Bioware NPCs look obsolete to me in comparison. They've done the same basic formula since Baldur's Gate.

Even an old EA game about the Godfather had a big city and NPCs walking around and reacting to you (I remember they asked you about Topeka a lot). Funnily they all shared a total of about 4 unique faces, presumably due to memory constraints. But those constraints are now gone! It's a new generation.

They could make the allies attack them instead of ignore them. I know some basic thing of game developing (very basic), so they can make that the allies saw them as hostil, all of the allies, not only few of them, and when they kill the enemies the just can go back to their spot. Maybe thats easier. I maybe don't explain well, but whats botter me is the allies do nothing if the enemies are in the camp

That could work.

What's bothersome is that BioWare has managed to have reactive NPC's in the past. In DA:Awakening, when you find hostiles around the city of Amaranthine, the guards nearby will join in pursuit and fight.

Reminds me of the horrible time I forced 60 hours into DAI before deciding there was nothing in it I enjoyed. The games are in no way similar so the references are pointless.

A2.
Hot Chicks > ME2 planet scan > food poisoning > DA

Mass effect NPCs had much more personality than the robots in DA.

The npcs in mass effect are almost the same as DA, the npcs in DA  also talk like the npcs in mass effect but their always are at the same spot doing nothing. The npc in the citadel are like the same in heaven in dragon age, someone talk but nothing more, yes the citadel  is small (in mass effect 3) so there are not much what the npc can do, but i wouln't like that the npcs in the Ark (or whatever the new ship is called) iis full of mannequins.

It occurred to me that since ME:A will have Crowd Control tech, then it's inevitable we will be encountering crowds of NPCs. Perhaps in a HUB, Way Station, in  Bars or in "heavy settlements".

I'm looking forward to this experience.

It has to be coded in the engine and you'd think Frostbite would be capable of this. But it didn't happen in Inquisition and I have yet to see any example of it in Andromeda. It'd be strange wandering around, say, the Arc and all we see are a few lonely NPCs rooted in placed.

I think Bioware should take a look at The Witcher's NPC settings; everyone's minding their own business and don't care what Geralt is doing. But for the humourous part they can add some funny characters like Conrad Verner, Niftu Cal, Refund Guy..
