I know there were probably a lot of threads on this already. But now that some time has passed since ME3 and we are about to get MEA, I want to know what people view as their top romances storyline wise, or anything really.

Having played 4 different Shepards (2 Paragon M/FM, 2 Renegade M/FM), here is my personal ranking:

1. Miranda Lawson: IMO her romance had the best acting and was actually really sweet. I don't know if Bioware did this on purpose, but Miranda in ME2 was pretty cool but in ME3 she came off as the "girl of your dreams" kind of effect. Nice work writers and I think the actor was probably the best.

2. Garrus Vakarian: Pretty good script and pretty convincing. Garrus' voice actor was really good wrt immersion.

3. Tali'Zorah vas Normandy: Tali ended up being the "girl next door" type. Again really awesome voice acting, just fell short of Miranda/Garrus b/c the writing wasn't as good.

4. Liara T'Soni: The default romance. Bioware really put a lot of effort into the writing and it fell short of Miranda/Tali but still pretty good.

5. Thane Krios: Nice romance with a tragic ending. Love it. Too bad it ended so early.

6. Jack: Psycho girlfriend. The only thing that disappointed me was how the writers basically forgot her "redemption" romance storyline in ME3 and she basically asks if you want to keep going or just be friends. Major immersion breaker IMO.

7. Ashley Williams: This one was the most disappointing, because in ME1 the Ashley romance was really nice, better than Liara's. But in ME3 the writers just made her seem cold and uncaring. Like my Paragon Shep was loyal to her and was only nice to her but she seemed to have forgetten how close they were in ME1.

8. Kaiden Alenko: Kaiden would have been better than Ashley if he wasn't so boring. But his romance was sweet too, just the character is too bland.

9. Kelly Chambers: A hidden gem that I personally think would have been close to number one if Bioware put in the effort in the writing. She also has that sweet girl next door type of feel.

10. Jacob Taylor: An okay romance in ME2 but a major disappointment in ME3 and not just because he cheats. But because he seems so uncaring and nonchalant about it. Like Ashley, Bioware writers seem to have a case of amnesia when it comes to how close people were in previous games.

11. Samara: Her limited romance was short and sweet. The reason she's not up there is because there isn't much dialogue.

12. Samantha Traynor: Pretty funny romance but a side diversion. Also really fake writing.

13. Steve Cortez: Honestly I did not even try this one, it just felt too uncomfortable and weird for me.

I just think it depends on your Shepard first. I think they're all pretty good (for males at least.. don't know others), but not all of them are my thing. Like Miranda and Shep kind of come off as the Power Couple. And it's sort of classy, in a way. That's not for everyone though.

I just go with Liara > Then Jack. It's complicated :P As for your comment about Jack, it's just up in the air like every romance in a new game. You have to re-confirm all of them.

I personally like Liara the most. Her romance arc spans the entire trilogy if you include the LotSB DLC, and other than ME2 she has a lot of good content. But Miranda is another great character to have a romance with and the Citadel DLC improved the romance in ME3 greatly.

The only romances I've done is Samantha, Miranda and Ashley. I say those three are the best only because I never romanced the others

You ranked Miranda's as #1, but I think hers might be one of the worst; perhaps ahead of those few who only are in ME3. For starters, there is so little content in ME2 (for all romances) and ME3, and I don't find the content given to be very good. Jack, Thane, and Jacob (lol) all suffer as well for having little ME3 material due to not being squadmates. There are also deeper issues with many of the "lesser" romances that I won't get into here.

Best romance? Based on content, Liara's might arguably be the best cumulatively throughout the trilogy; largely on the goodwill earned in LotSB, which was amazing. Her arc plummeted greatly in ME3 though.

I consider Ashley, Kaidan, Tali, and Garrus to all be contenders; their greatest letdowns being not being real LIs for one of the games. ME3 really let those romances stand out.

Even though romances in ME can be fun, they felt pretty half-assed up until ME3 (lotSB excluded) without defining the playthrough very much. DA2 had similar problems. Bioware did the best with DA:O.

I just don't see content as a determining factor. I would definitely like more for all characters, but what's right for the character you're playing is more important. Is that crazy or what? To me, it's always going to be a side feature anyways.

I only romanced Kaidan and Steve. It was nothing special just some extra emotional drama for Shepard who was already quite traumatized by the time of ME3.

Once I tried to also play female Shepard (hated her voice and the bad character creator) and romanced Jacob. Big mistake. I didn't even finish my ME3 playthrough with that character.

So I would say Kaidan was the best because he was your comrade from game one and there was so much history between you two. Steve's romance was surprisingly good too definitely had some highlights I still remember (his was the first romance I played because Kaidan left Shep after the Udina incident).

I haven't felt as compelled to do all the romances in ME and there are still some I haven't finished, so I'll just pick a few favorites.

1. Kaidan.  :P  I actually didn't like him much at first but as I got to know him I the more I liked him, and he ended up being a fav character of the series. I really like his backstory and how it changed him -- people say he's dull, but being reserved is how he protects himself. Would've loved to know him when he had more snark, but I still like him the way he is. I really enjoyed the way his romance carried through and culminated in 3 -- especially if no one was romanced in 2. There a lot of little moments that were just...  He was my first LI in the series, which means he's extra special.  ;) I'm also rather fascinated by the human biotic subject in general...

2. Tali. Didn't expect to like her romance and almost didn't romance her, but it was very sweet and has one of the best parting moments at the Beam.  :( It hurts just to think about it... It also makes the whole quraian/geth thing more enjoyable... which is generally irritating because I find those Admirals to be insufferable.  <_< All her little moments are precious. The singing though...  :pinched:

3. Thane. Really loved his character and the feels. The romance felt like genuine affection on borrowed time. If it had gone differently in 3 he probably would've rivaled/equaled Kaidan. Also find the drell to be an interesting race.

Still working on: Jack, Ashley, Steve

-I did Jack before the Citadel DLC was released and have yet to play any of that content with her as an LI.

--Romanced Ashley in 1 but not yet in 3.

---Currently on my way to lock-in Steve romance.

I was never interested in doing Miranda, but I've been thinking about giving it a try... The problem is I prefer LIs to be on the Normandy in 3.

Romance rankings in Mass Effect trilogy in my opinion:

1. No romance (because all the romances actually suck)

2. Femshep + Kaidan

3. FemShep + Samantha Traynor

4. Sheploo + Jack

5. (Tie):

5a. Femshep/Sheploo + Tali/Garrus/Thane/Liara (because about half of each alien romance tends to creep me out for some reason because they are alien)

5b, Sheploo + Kaidan (mostly the same as FemShep, except Kaidan seems to come across as too leery/aggressive/creepy to me)

5c. Sheploo + Steve (

6. ??

7. Sheploo + Ash (seems forced, not very good or memorable)

8 - 9. ???

10. Sheploo + Miranda. Ugh. Terrible all the way through.

...

100. FemShep + Jacob, because FemShep is too flirty in ME2 and Jacob leaves you in ME3 without even a "it's not you it's me."

Content is a huge determining factor for me. Reasonable prerequisites for any good romance is an inclusion of both quantity and quality. I shouldn't nearly forget my character is in a relationship. It hurts the immersion.

Female Shepard:

#1 Liara the best written and acted. Sweet, funny, caring, you feel that they have a shot at future together. As far I'm concerned it's the best one.

#2 Traynor. There is some funny dialogue and nice chemistry between the actors but she comes in too late and feels like had she in the first or second one she might have developed into the best.

#3 Garrus probably the only male VA with any decent chemistry with Jennifer Hale and he comes off as character who wants to have a future with Shepard.

#4 Kelly Chambers-Nice character, too bad she's a one night stand.

#5 Tie between Kaiden and Jacob-Boring and Bland. The only time I romanced these two guys was playing an ultra renegade and then I always wished there was the dialogue option to tell them both how bad they are in bed because dull these two guys are.

#6 Samara-It's too little, too late.

#7 Thane Predictable and tragically poorly written.

#8 Javik A poorly written joke that is not funny.

Male Shepard.

#1 Ash great chemistry between the actors and she's a nice partner to a paragon Shepard.

#2 Miranda again great chemistry between the actors and she's a nice partner to the renegade Shepard.

#3 Tali some funny dialogue and interesting relationship.

#4 Kelly Chambers see above.

#5 Steve Cortez Nice guy and might have been a better relationship if he had been in one or two.

#6 Jack-Nice attempt but it comes off as too mean or too sappy.

#7 Kaiden Weird and out of place.

#8 Samara-see female Shepard.

#9 Liara zero chemistry and laughable bad dialogue that makes Male Shepard look like a desperate creepy old man begging for sex in the first game and they sound like they're not even in the same room in ME2: Lair of the Shadow Broker this when I said I was done with the male Shepard.

It is too bad she wasn't in the previous games. Maybe she will be if the trilogy is ever remade.

For male Shepard it is Miranda and Tali. For femshep its is Kaiden and Thane.

I was always a Tali fan in terms of romance. Its still pretty great. I love the banter between broshep and Tali. But if I were to put myself in the role of Shepard (which I always do), I would go for Miranda. There are too many unknowns with Tali. And as mentioned, Miranda's romance itself is very well written and its pretty sweet. Miranda's growth as a character makes her extremely likable. As stupid as this may sound, what makes Miranda the best romance is actually her rejection scene. Is she the only LI that doesn't take the rejection well? Its well acted and I felt bad for Miranda. What I took away from that scene was that Miranda really cared about you and the relationship meant a lot to her. The Citadel DLC and scenes puts her romance over the top while Tali's is abysmal. So Miranda da bess.

Not much to say about femshep. I like Kaiden the best. It feels the most natural and well written. Their dialogue in ME3 feels natural. I personally never saw Garrus as a romance and more of a combat buddy. Plus, while his romance was funny and awkward, I didn't think it was the best one. Thane to me was incredibly well written. Femshep crying at the end of the Citadel DLC was a great touch, as were his video logs to her.

The only romances I will never do is Jacob for obvious reasons, and Liara because I severely dislike her as a character.

From the ones I've completed myself my favorite is Liara, followed by Kelly and Miranda

I think Liara has the most complete romance arc and the best overall. The evolution of the character really makes the relationship evolve in a very unique way. They have experienced their ups and downs, which makes the romance more meaningful imo. The chemistry between Jennifer Hale and Ali Hillis is also fantastic, and it improves the emotional and romantic tone of the relationship to an even greater extent.

As much as I like Kelly in ME2 and consider her one of the more "realistic" romance options in Mass Effect because there's consistent flirting and a good build-up, there is barely any content in ME3. I thought Kelly's romance in the original script for ME3 was phenomenal - it really showed how Shepard could connect with someone who didn't need to be right there on the front line with him. Unfortunately, BW cut most of it.

Miranda has her moments, good and bad. When she's flustered after the kiss or when she makes you say you're not going to die on her she does a pretty good job. And when you tell her that it wouldn't be so bad to let Oriana know she has a sister! Great scene. Unfortunately these get a little overshadowed by gratuitous booty shots... ME3 Miranda was a bit disappointing (except the Citadel content which is excellent)

The romances with the best chemistry in no particular order are:-

Maleshep x Ashley

Maleshep x Miranda

Maleshep x Tali

Femshep x Liara

Femshep x Traynor

Femshep x Garrus

Femshep x Kaidan

All the rest are garbage, especially, Maleshep x Liara, that **** gave me cancer. Like Cyberstrike said there's zero chemistry between the VA's.

So why do people tend to like femshep and Liara but not broshep and Liara as much? It seems like it would play out more or less the same but I hear many say femshep and Liara have great chemistry specifically. Why not broshep too? Anyone care to shed some light on that?

Probably because BroShep is a total creep with Liara? Hehe

Honestly, there's no real difference except for the performance of either Shepard. Hale is a lot more a flirt I think and they're friends in real life might help with it.

In the dialogue that leads up to sex scene in ME1 it's laughable bad when Meer says it, but when Hale says it sounds right.

Part of the reason I love Meer. The monotone is hilarious.
