Right, I have got most of the achievements except for the 2 runs on Hard and Nightmare.

I am a very casual gamer and have never played Hard or Nightmare on anything in my life.

Are they really very difficult? And do you have to keep friendly fire on in order to get the achievements on those playthroughs? Or can you play Hard/Nightmare without friendly fire?

Is there a certain class which will make it easier? I normally play a mage or a rogue archer. I didn't like getting up close and personal with a warrior, so I've only done that once out of all my playthroughs (20 + counting, LOL!)

Thanks :)

You do not have to play with FF on to get the achievements, and I would say it's safer to play Archer or Mage so that you don't have to get up close. There's so many guides to build effective classes here on the forums. Good luck :)

Friendly fire is totally optional. No need to have it on.

Hard and especally nightmare will require you to take certain critical abilities to make a run easier, or at least it is highly recomended you do, like warrior's horn of valor with fortifying blast upgrade (on your warrior), 2 mages both with barrier spells and a rogue with the toxic cloud ability and its elusive stacks upgrade. With those abilities and upgrades (and setting Ai to use them) you are set. Combine it with crafting (make sure you craft weapons and armor with best tier 3/ tier 4 materials) and you are set. That is all you really need. Seriously, people can solo this game on nm+trials so a full party of 4 toons will get the job done. Besides if one of the mages has the revive spell you can always revive fallen companions. And if that does not work just "retreat" with the last surviving character from a difficult encounter and come back when you are more leveled.

I'd say Hard is only noticeable when you do the boss battles. Nightmare, on the other hand, is noticeable for some mobs and most rifts, as well as bosses.

Adding to that excellent advice are a few more tips recorded here:

(GUIDE) Simple tactics for new players -- how to survive until Skyhold

You're not a new player, but the tips will still be helpful for a Hard/Nightmare run. Make sure you read the whole thread, since there are some alternatives and further discussion of better tips in replies.

In that guide is a link to another guide, Making Short Work of the Hinterlands, that will speed things up for you. Particularly if you are going to do a Hard and a Nightmare run.

Just to be sure: if you do a nightmare run you'll also get the hard achievement.

A well loaded Golden Nug can also make the nightmare run quite manageable (if you want to go that way).

Thanks everyone, some reading to do with those build/runtroughs, thanks.

I think I'll try Hard first before I attempt Nightmare, just to get some idea of the harder difficulty.

I've got quite a few schematics with the Golden Nug so I will certainly utilise that.

If you are not using the Walk Softly Trial, why not start with Nightmare? If you find that manageable, you've got it made. If not, you can lower it during the course of the game and go for hard.
