Did anyone think Mass Effect was a bit like Moby Dick. In Moby Dick, Captain Ahab chases a whale who bit his leg off. He believes some supreme consciousness is guiding the whale. This consciousness could be God, the Devil or some other cosmic force. The whales are referred to as leviathans in the book, after the sea monster God created in the Bible to help bring about Armageddon.

Sound familiar?

Shepard is Captain Ahab

The Reapers are Moby Dick and the Leviathan

The Star Child is God or the cosmic consciousness

Ishmael calls Captain Ahab a monomaniac. This is how the Council see Shepard. The originators of the Reapers are even called Leviathans in the game. Sovereign says "You cannot grasp the nature of our existence." This is similar to the speech God gives Job: "Where were you when I put Leviathan in the sea..."

My Point is this: Andromeda was a princess who was sacrificed to a sea monster controlled by the God Poseidon. Does this mean that we will see more Leviathans controlled by a godlike consciousness in the new Mass Effect?

Everything we have seen in the original trilogy barring a couple of milky way species(the popular ones anyway) will not be seen, touched on, or barely referenced in Andromeda. Again, that was the whole point of going to Andromeda in the first place. Don't expect to see Milky Way galaxy again or hear from it, for that matter until they reboot the series.

I'm wondering if this is actually a reboot in disguise. I wouldn't be surprised if they recycle plots and themes from the originals. We already know there is a new Prothean race.

I don't know about seeing Leviathan again, but I like the Ahab idea. It is kind of like that, isn't it?

"You've got one love... The Reapers. That's too bad. Because I'm a better lay."

I don't mean the actual Leviathans from ME3. Just big monsters who are controlled by God to wreak havoc on man, like in the Bible and Moby Dick.

I doubt we'll be seeing any Leviathans in Mass Effect: Andromeda--I feel like BioWare probably want as much separation between this new game and the Reapers as possible, 'cause if any bit of the Mass Effect story has been played out to completion, it's that one. Or, at least, I certainly hope that's the case.

EDIT: Just read your clarification. There's potential in the idea, but we've kind of already done the, 'Vastly powerful malevolent force controlled by a god-like entity, acting on motivations that - at least, before the chat with Starchild and the Leviathans - seem impossible to comprehend' thing, and I'd prefer not to go there again so soon.

All that said...

I'd be so down for some giant space whales.

Or giant space jellyfish.

Or giant living space crystal snowflake thingies.

It will probably be best if they do not recycle the Reaper story. I still wonder if the name Andromeda is significant or just a coincidence.

Would love giant space animals. There were some flying in the E3 "trailer". I just hope they don't put in giant moon sized animals since imo that gets pretty unbelievable even for most scifi.

Space whales are my guilty pleasure.

Usually, I'll at least pretend I like my sf hard and my science cold-facty, and that I good-naturedly scoff at some of the less plausible biology and physics that crops up in softer stories. But I freaking love space whales. They make no sense! There's not enough for them to eat! What are they, photosynthetic? How would they evolve? How would they move? ...Man, I secretly don't even care because whoosh, there goes that whale in the vacumn and it's so cool.

after the sea monster God created in the Bible to help bring about Armageddon.

Javik had good reading comprehension. Leviathan = Satan in the bible. "Will he make an agreement with you for you to take him as your slave for life" aka shake wicked from the earth, "bird in a cage". "King over all that is proud". Everything in that chapter in Job describing him is symbolism. Dragon with wings cut is a snake and an angel with wings cut is leviathan. "King of Tyre" is also a description in another book, but that seems more physical. TyraEl is an interesting name and would be a play on god of Tyre. Notice he also fell in his game (Diablo) and had his wings clipped but they made him the good guy in Diablo. Javik also specifically mentions the fall. Game devs seem to read the bible a lot, and interestingly know more about the symbolism than the people who run churches...

So if you want you can incorporate that into your theory. Mine is simpler. ME 3 was a 2001 ripoff, Matrix architect ripoff, and all about becoming a god and transhumanism and even used 2001 starchild to get that across. End of Ragnarok/Armageddon scene with the ship and Joker and Edi telling you synthesis happens either way. Edi Joker romance to push you to the decision. Color scheme to push you to the decision. "Left/right hand path" symbolism in the decision. Dreams are about mortality and dead companions and loves ones and the kid was a delusion brought on by stress and symbolized youth and since Shep and the kid burn as one, I think it is default male shep (looks just like him). Casey Hudson wanted it to be the end, so that is what Mac Walters had to write...which is why we have to separate ourselves from that ending and decision to even have a 4th game.

Never forget that the capital ship was named the DESTINY ASCENSION early in the series either. Now whether Casey and both lead writers (that changed from ME 1 and 2 to 3 and Mac was co lead on 2) all agreed on the ascension to godhood angle? Who knows. Ask them. They all think you are idiots though, because no one got the ending and people instead created the ridiculous indoctrination theory, when the dumb kid was in dreams about death and the Prothean VI detected no indoctrination in Shep twice...

Sometimes Andromeda is just a name of a nearby galaxy. This is one such instance.

Yeah, I agree...

But Moby Dick. Not sure why that went over my head before.

Wow. So the truth comes out. Mass Effect is just a straight up carbon-copy of Moby Dick.

I don't know what to say, Bioware. I'm disappointed in you.

I love it when Rebels comes over all Star Trek - with some added Force mysticism for flavour, naturally - for an episode every now and then. The one with the whales is probably my second favourite example, after this:

I still wonder if the name Andromeda is significant or just a coincidence.

I'm guessing they went with that because the idea is we're going to go to a 'local' galaxy and that's the most obvious one (it's the biggest and you can see it with the naked eye).  I mean we could have been off to the Large Magellanic Cloud but the name doesn't trip off the tongue in quite the same way.  They could have gone further afield (though I'm struggling to believe we could get to Andromeda as it is) but something like M51 is even less saleable.

Fun fact: did you know another member of the local group is called Fornax Dwarf?  Maybe they should send us there.
