Wow. I leave for a day and this thread is still alive. Genuinely thought is was gonna die.
When I said the council was lying to us, I didn't mean that it was their fault that ME3 happened. What could they have done that would significantly have helped? Almost nothing.
Also Anderson said in ME2 that he believes Shepard, but doesn't have hard evidence, and he can be part of the Council, so it is also possible to not all council members were on the same page.
Also the info from Ilos could have been leaked to the Shadow Broker or another 3rd party, putting pressure on the governments to build the Arks or whatever.
I however do not agree that they built the Arks to go to Andromeda just for lulz. Would you build a submarine with building materials and go construct a permanent underwater home just because you can? Well maybe someone who is stupid rich and bored af.
But no government or private company is going to invest in an Ark to go to Andromeda just so some teenagers can have an adventure and get laid. There has to be a greater reason.
It is logical to think that the ME governments are a reflection of present day ones (although a bit idealised in some respects, like the Alliance and all that). And we know that today, applied science get's more funding than basic science, as it seems more profitable. Would you fund someone researching 3D printed organs, or someone researching dark matter composition of the universe? If you were an entrepreneur, you'd probably go for the one that can be applied here and now to make mad sums of money.
This will be the same for the Arks. If it's not the Reapers, then frankly idk what would be different in Andromeda. Resources are everywhere in the MW. So are new alien species, since most of it is not explored in ME.
I personally think that the Ark project leaves for Andromeda because of the Reapers, as nothing else makes sense in the context of the 3 previous games.

He's lucky he's an old man wearing diapers. Never hit an old man in diapers, the smell is horrendous.

The asari councilor could've talked to higher commander, since asari are the leading authority when it comes to the protheans, about what Shepard told her and the rest of the council that a prothean beacon gave Shepard visions of the what happened to the protheans. At that point they could've mentioned the beacon on Thessia. Have it investigated to find out if it could shed some light on what Shepard mentioned. Of course they needed the cipher that Shepard had. So why not have Shepard visit Thessia before the SR1 is destroyed? Vendetta is revealed and it tells about the crucible and catalyst.
The other thing is that if the councilor is dead, the new one may not have a reason to talk with high command and choose to ignore everything. Just let everyone believe it was a giant geth ship

He has a funny way of saying he believes Shepard especailly after saying its up to Shepard to find a way to stop the reapers. He did nothing for 2 years except sit around taking the shape of his chair. How hard would it of been to suggest having Liara investigate the ruins at Mars? Or investigate Eden Prime for anymore clues that might be found? Or go to Ilos to investigate the archives there. Didn't Liara say she wanted to stay and study them, if taken on that mission? It would not of been hard for Anderson to get Joker to use a shuttle to fly Liara, along with Ashley/Kaidan and Garrus to investigate those areas.

I would be curious who leaked the information to the broker

Individuals that have vast fortunes may do it just for the bragging rights of saying their the first to attempt something like this. The ships head to Andromeda to explore the best areas to build colonies as well as to expand their companies.
I agree my friend.I agree, from the trailer and everything we've seen so far, it's very possible that BioWare will go the route of "we go because we can". This may very well be the case. Personally, I hope there is more to it because even in the ME universe as shown so far, mankind (and in fact all the races in the Milky Way that we know) follow very much the same patterns as we do today. Just read the descriptions of colony worlds in the Galaxy Map and you'll see that for all of them, there are sociopolitical, strategic or economic reasons for the state of their development.
I always like this approach because it is a "realistic" scenario (within the universe of course). For a project as massive (and central to the plot) as the trip to Andromeda, I'd hope they come up with a very good backstory.
At least the fact that they want to dedicate an entire novel to it bodes well, IMO. I am also curious to see what they come up with in the end.
Yes, lot's of individuals have an explorer's spirit. I dare say, I am one myself and I made my life choices accordingly. But as someone who is constantly trying to secure funding for research without an immediate tangible benefit, let me tell you it is dam hard (I wish it weren't, would make my life a lot easier) and the bigger and more expensive the project, the more tangible profit investors want to see, no matter if that's governments, businesses or other organizations. There may be individual philanthropists that sponsor truly abstract research but they are usually far and few between and I think having something like the Ark program financed by one or two people would simply be too much of a stretch (hope it's not frigging TIM).
And of course, I also want to explore Andromeda. I just wouldn't want the entire experience of playing the game and going forth and exploring being based on a premise that I deem completely implausible (both in the real world and in the ME universe as we know it). That's the one thing that could ruin it for me even if the rest of the game turns out great. So I am just hoping that BW will give us a background to this entire setting that doesn't make me cringe all the time at least.
What are you the way the way that you are? Did we go to the moon? How would we even know? We were in a space race. It makes sense that we would fake it. Why haven't we gone back? Maybe we did go. How would we the people know? There's film footage but that's all. I don't have a problem on that part but Mars? No we are going to Mars most definitely. All we need is the technology. It would probably be like that one Matt Damon movie though. The problem I have with Mass Effect though is how long it took us to get there. No one went to the moon...
No one...
we never went there...
Same is going to be true for Mars....

True, some things could have been done if they really thought it was going to be that bad. I just feel like they disliked Shepard. Too cocky probably. And they maybe thought s/he was a Cerberus construction. Also, they would probably focus more on the void left on the Citadel, and try to rebuild, instead getting as much prothean info as possible. Whatever they did, the Crucible still has to be built one way or another. It would still have taken losses, although far far fewer if they knew when the Reapers were coming.
Didn't mean leak in that sense, since he finds out everything, lol. I meant someone didn't keep their mouth shut when it should have been. Maybe they sold the info to someone, and this someone is the one organising the Arks. If that is the case, they still need to be tied to the government in some way, since we see Alliance shuttles boarding the Ark. I just hope that no Cerberus pops us in Andromeda, or Styx, or Helios or whatever they want to call themselves there.

I preferred it when they thought Shepard was crazy.
