So... the incest... in Thedas...

How often that happen?

I noticed that the Magi Origin Warden is an Amell, and his mother is the Amell one, Revka Amell. The children of two heterosexual parents are named by the surname of the father... So I wonder...

Are the parents of the Magi Warden siblings?

That would explain why the Magi Warden is so trusty of the mouse in the Veil, come on, you know there are demons everywhere and in the fade everything can be a lie!

Another example of Incest could be Sandal.

But anyway, as Leliana says, we have to try everything in life, except incest and qunari cuisine

If they were, I think a scandal would have affected the Amell family before the kids turned out to be mages. It's possible that Revka's husband took her surname because he was a commoner and she was a noble - there's plenty of precedent for that in our world. Alternatively, her husband could indeed have been another Amell, a cousin or second cousin.

(Some societies consider cousin marriage incestuous and others don't, but there's little evidence that it's particularly dangerous. The risk of serious birth defects is about 2% in the general population and 4% in the offspring of first cousins.)

Another example of Incest could be Sandal.

On the contrary - the rumour is that Sandal's mother was an elven or human mage. That's about as far from incestuous as a dwarf can get.

I remember people demanding Bethany romance before DA2 came out... Sadly, Bioware aren't that sick. Such a pity, they could be on Fox News again.

Matrilineal marriage is a thing, especially among nobles.

Sorry, but how is Sandal an example of Incest? Because he's developmentally challenged? That... kind of an offensive suggestion to make.

And it's established that he's lyrium-addled.

I don't see anything "sick" in an incestuous relationship. It's unusual, sure, and care should be taken with having children, but IMO the various laws against incestuous relationships (as opposed to laws against having children) are leftovers from a time when a relationship usually meant children - outdated, and I can't see *any* reason to oppose it on moral grounds these days.

While true, there's a legitimate biological instinct behind the majority of people seeing it as "sick," and it's something that you have to go out of your way to unlearn unless you didn't have it to begin with.

Even if you don't unlearn it, I think that mere revulsion is never enough for a moral condemnation. You have to demonstrate that some valid moral principle is violated by an action to justify that. In the light of that, I see many traditional distinctions as merely aesthetic categories.

True enough. Like many, perhaps most, purity-based instincts in humanity, it's outdated.

You bring a picture of them having the same surname, but has it ever occured to you that women who marry often take on their husband's surname?

This is further supported in Dragon Age later, when Sera refers to herself as "Sera Lavellan" (or, so it was in my playthrough - surname may vary) if you marry her.

Are you trolling, or do you not realize they're bullshitting the guard to gain entry?

Well, given the way the historical societies that inspired the setting worked, I'd be surprised if the nobility isn't at least somewhat inbred. As for how incestuous their relationships are, well, that would probably depend on how far out you take the definition. While parent/child and sibling/sibling were generally considered beyond the pale outside of a few societies, cousin/cousin or uncle/niece marriages (which some do consider incest) were reasonably common among the upper classes (in Europe at least, I'm not that knowledgeable about elsewhere) right up to pretty recent times - and thanks to successive generations of such marriages, at times the married couples were at times biologically pretty much as closely related as siblings. The von Hapsburgs are the classic example of a family which did this a bit too often.

Of course, there's the (not entirely unjustified) fan theory that Alastair and Morrigan are half-siblings, so if you let the former do the ritual....

Revka is definitely an Amell by birth. She's Leandra's cousin, the daughter of Fausten Amell who was Aristede Amell's brother.

Muslims can marry cousins, some call it incest, but for Muslims it is not. It secure the lineage and securing wealth from passed to "outsiders". Christians consider marrying first cousin is incest as far as i know. Not sure about the Jews.

Marrying cousins is common in my society...in fact i was having a crush with my cousin...and still...

The perception of first cousin marriage in Christian (including those that were historically Christian but arguably aren't any more) societies varies a lot with culture/nationality. In some places it's considered incestuous, in others, it's not and is fact considered perfectly acceptable (indeed, as I pointed out in my previous post, among the upper classes, especially the royalty, it was often the norm).

I believe the opposite is rare, but not unheard of. Especially if the Amells were influential once - more so than the man's own house.

That was a joke, by stating the name of the world's actual most peaceful religion that I know of.

Of course, we weren't actually in dangerous territory with religion at all until you took a thinly-veiled shot at Islam.

If her husband was from a less prestigious family, it wouldn't be all that surprising if they used her name. This sort of thing happened in our history, though it would be slightly unusual for it to happen with a younger branch I think - it's more for when a title would otherwise pass outside the family.

Maric Theirin's mother was also a Theirin, for whatever that's worth.

Its interesting that this didn't happen with Hawke. I guess it reflects Leandra's belief she had been disinherited.

Or it could just be like Franklin Roosevelt marrying Eleanor Roosevelt - they were just distantly related.
