"You're just a machine, and machines can be broken" will continue to have an extra special place in my SHUT UP SHEPARD I CAN'T HEAR YOU LALALA folder. Bonus points for being one of ME1's hidden autodialogues (They drive me batty -- you think there's a choice, and no! All three options are the same).

But yes, I absolutely agree with fewer terrible lines from our protagonist. The problem, of course, is that terrible is subjective and someone probably loves that line.

That whole dialogue exchange was stupid. I also thought "Shepard's the best we've got" line was a bad one - because it kind of sounds like you're at a bargain bin sale.

I'm always uncomfortable when Shepard says that. Like, yeah machines can be broken, but so can bones. What of it. Wanna know what can't be broken? The cycle, apparently. Even though it can be.

But it makes me uncomfortable mainly when Shepard says 'you're not even alive, not really', it's just such a simple minded and slightly ignorant thing to say. And contradicts Shepard's potential opinions on AI and synthetics in later games.

We should have had Peter Griffin on the crew in the trilogy, so that everytime Sheps talked there could've been a "shut up, Meg" moment.

But they're clearly not aliv.. arrgh, a debate for another place and time.

What about that dialogue from Miranda's romance in ME2, where she complains she doesn't have "that fire" that makes people follow Shepard "to hell and back"?

Now if that's not cheesy, cliche and cringeworthy (TRIPLE C!!!) I don't know what is.

I guess that's cheesy, but I kind of still like what they're going for at least. About being engineered for greatness vs just naturally being that way. It's funny if you're Earthborn.

She doesn't know Shepard's secret strategy - talking to the crew a few times and then doing a loyalty quest for them...

I still think they could have come up with even a slightly more imaginative way of putting that.

Not to mention finishing all conversations with "I should go." Leaves them wanting more.

Guess what? Most people who game are used to stupid cliches, in fact they expect them. I for one agree with you, but I don't think they are listening. There is face palming everywhere in RPG's, even the really good ones. I feel like the writers are actually very capable, but intentionally dumb down their product to reach a wider audience... The same goes with with TV programming.

While I agree with you, that request is a tad pointless. You might as well ask for the game to be better. It's obvious dialogue should be improved and not rely on cliches.

I'll just leave this here as an example of well-written dialogue (warning: spoilers for the original Deus Ex).

Is it really obvious? Because 2 ME games later and Bioware still hadn't gotten the memo.

Maybe it's more about skill than will.

ME3 had some of the most cringe worthy back-and-forth dialogue between Shepard and whom ever he was addressing. Sometimes it felt like a badly written fan-fiction with all those one-liners running rampant.Edit: I actually want Andromeda to take itself more seriously than DA or the previous installments of the ME series.

Why so serious? No but seriously now that would be boring.

I really love a perfectly executed cliche, but i'm in the minority.

Me too.  I think the cliches were a part of ME's humorous charm... suited the "stand up" comedy flavor they set up when they cast Seth Green as Joker.

*Ahem*

I thought it was the perfect response to being forced to listen to that big stupid toaster and its bloviating Bond villain monolouge about why meatbags suck so much. Brevity is the soul of wit, and in contrast to Sovreign's laughable speech, that line was perfect in its simplicity. The hint of trollish irreverance in the delivery was just icing on the cake.

The only way to make it better were to include an interrupt enabling one to break the console (a machine) to cut discount Cthulu off, then pop off another cheesy one liner like "case in point".

Loved that line so much I borrowed it for my own monolouge in the next game.

"Lemme tell you something, brother! This isn't about strategy and tactics-- it's about saying your prayers, and taking your vitamins! The question isn't what we're going to do about the Reapers. The question is: 'Reapers, what're you gonna do...when the Shepamania runs wild over you?!'. Get your guns. We should go."

On the plus side, he wrote Javik and some other good things. But for some reason, I can just feel his enthusiasm coming off those two. People knock Mac Walters, but I always liked his stuff. I thought Wrex and Garrus were cooler before.

Anyone, anywhere, with any level of complicity to the ME3 endings is not to be trusted.

Because every character who ever speaks should always sound as eloquent and intelligent as Lincoln reciting the Gettysburg Address and should maintain a high level of discourse at all times?

As much as I like brilliant writing and dialogue, I'm not really expecting every single character in a game to come across as if they're all gifted orators. Let me put it this way...I expect the characters to sound like they're actual people most of the time, not characters plucked out of a literary novel. Real people can be dumb, and real people tend to say and do dumb things on occasion. I also think that most people tend not to speechify on a regular basis.

There was writing that ranged from great to meh in the the games. Now while I want characters making smart decisions and for logic to prevail at least 99% of the time in any given story AND for the writing to be fairly smart, it wouldn't strike me as being particularly realistic for literally every single character in a game to sound coolly cerebral every single time they open their mouths or for every conversation (or speech)  to sound like "an adult conversation" (however you're actually defining that, OP).
