You may have done this:
Note: Once you passed through the Magical Barrier to reach the center of the forest (and the ruins), you can no longer trade with the Hermit, nor can you agitate him into attacking by rummaging through the stump (the Golden Ring can still be pilfered).

Hmmm....that is what happened this time around. Once I got the Great Oaks branch, I went straight for the barrier. My bad.... In previous run-throughs, when I traded for all three objects, I don't specifically remember doing all the trades before crossing the barrier, but I suppose that's what must have happened. Oh well...I missed out on a book and a helmet to an armor set that's never completed. Not a big deal, but good to know why it happened. Thanks.
You didn't ask him a question?
The problem is that you click on him and all he does is laugh maniacally; he doesn't allow you to ask questions or converse at all.
