I don't think mechanics DLC are inherently unreasonable. I mean, something like Paradox strategy games the mechanics basically are the game, so any substantial DLC has be about adding new ones. They just need to be about adding new stuff, not fixing existing broken things.

Most of the trials were things that seem legitimately extra enough to me, so I don't think its unreasonable that they're DLC. Could have done with "even ground" in the base game though IMO.

Even Ground is a odd case, since it throws out what was supposed to be a distinctive mechanic of the game. It's not terribly surprising that you didn't see that made optional in the initial release.

This would make sense if Bio had actually planned on "putting out a game with clunky mechanics and various flaws, and then selling the fixes as DLC later." Are you saying that they did?

It makes sense as stated.

The time to improve basic mechanics is in development, not in paid DLC.  That is why the whole "they shouldn't improve games with DLC" question is disingenuous in the first place.

The answer to this question is another question: Did we get a buggy game with poor leveling to the point entire enemy mobs were being removed and replaced and did the DLC add basic features that should have been in the main game?

The answer is yes.

I don't think it was intentional i just think they threw a better version of a good game under a bus and had to make it up a $23.98au DLC pack.

I don't think the Trials, with the possible exception of Even Ground, count as "improving basic mechanics". They're challenge modes, and nothing more.

And I think most of them are, except for the extremely silly ones.  And something like Rub Some Dirt On It could just as easily be a "don't use health pots" achievement with no slider.  Same with the supply cache one.

As it relates to MEA, I largely don't see the point of putting in a bunch of extra challenges in the options from the outset.  I am not opposed to BW adding them, I just don't think it is necessary.  When you select Insanity it should give you opponents that are challenging and use decent skills against you.  You shouldn't need to flip an additional setting.

It's not disingenuous if we're talking about the real world. Sure, it's pretty to think that we could live in a universe where games are always released with perfected mechanics, but that's not this universe.

I like the Trials because they let you control what you want to have in your games. You want level scaling and less exp? Toggle it on. You don't? Never have to touch them.
