It didn't, as far as we know. Except in the fevered imaginations of some posters.

Interesting. I was on the DAI beta patch test team and I had noticed there was something off with the lighting in the preview screens. There I posted a screenshot that showed that one side of the character was lit blue. It got fixed and is now using a neutral light source.
Still, it is not OK that when people asked for ages to get better lighting during character creation that nobody at BW actually checked it before release.
They likely did check it but it wasn't considered game breaking, so the game was released with the problem intact.
It's like the Mass Effect 3 face import bug. I refuse to believe that no-one at Bioware or the Q&A team found the issue (especially since there was a nice little on screen pop-up telling people that their Shepard's face couldn't be imported). It just wasn't considered a priority bug to fix before release.

And obviously this community just became so toxic it pushed them all away.

You cannot blame the community for what the trolls caused. I would go even further: If BW really valued their community, then they would have invested in it and never allowed this to happen. Do not blame the community for what BW has chosen to do with it. They let it go to hell.

What the devs seem to want is some kind of oversight group to keep the unruly elements of the community in check, armed with the power to "moderate" if you will, thus allowing the forums to keep the trolls in check.

Dismantling the best place to connect with the fan community and declaring it to be a step towards fostering a greater connection with that community is a truly Olympic level of Mental Gymnastics that I didn't think existed outside politics. Not to mention it's just insulting to the same fans you're turning away. It's like you guys actually thought that anyone would buy that.
I'm certain the community here on BSN would be willing to cut you some slack if you were honest about the reason for this. Is it the cost of maintaining the site? You can't take the criticism? EA made the call? At least that we could understand.
But if the reason really actually is what you said it was, then I question the cognitive powers of whoever came up with this idea and all those who agreed with it, because it's stupid. No other word for it. It's just plainly, unremarkably stupid.

Ghehe. That even sounds more creepy. What would be their definition of "unruly elements" and who would be that mysterious "oversight group"? I already was a little scared when they gave "innovation" and "iconic" a whole new meaning. ![]()

I kind of want to see Vorcha Master Bites (man, that was a clever name) here and that little list of his to describe a thread. Seeing the "GRAAAAAAGGHHH" and "Git Gud" items being ticked would be hilarious
just to have one last laugh.
Wonder where's he at.
Also, to all of you complaining the thread is going insanely OT, yes you're absolutely right. The reason is because most people is now congregated here and since the forums are closing, people here (us) just wanna talk about everything for as long as possible.
The only thing I regret is not being more involved in the past.
I'm sure BW thinks we're being super dramatic right now. And it's funny because closing the forums due to "vitriolic / toxic" (more like they can't accept criticism) behavior is a drama measure if I ever seen one. There are far worse melodramatic vitriolic dens of obscurity around the web I can guarantee you that.
This speaks more of the company rather than the customer... just saying.
I'm going to distort one of Boromir speeches here:
Sure there's hatred on these parts, annoying a** trolls, and sh*tstorm threads. But there's also beauty to be found, great ideas and intelligent discussion like you cannot find elsewhere, so little faith you have in your own fans?

Think about it. What other groups throughout history have been known for setting fire to writings that were critical of them?
Let's see... The nazis, the military juntas in south america (not sure if all of them though), my aunt burning my grandfather's books because it conflicted with her religion being "heresy" (although that's more of an isolated case, I guess).

Destroying the living knowledgebase that these forums contain is frankly insulting. Fans have put many hours of "work" and effort, be it helping newcomers with ME1 decisions / game mechanics / exploration, posting pics, discussing shifty looking cows and prothean spheres or simply offering advice. There are some pretty cool mods for ME1 as well that make the graphics feel a bit more modern, not that they are bad at all. While not terribly active, we are still on there helping people out.
Mass Effect 2 has a whole "Hold the Line" defense rating mechanic that is nearly impossible to derive without going into the game code or getting help from fans like Occam's Razor who made these really good flowcharts. The whole reason I came to the old BSN was so that I could figure out why Mordin kept dying on the Suicide Mission. Where can people get info like that if not on here? The old shutdown forums have so many face mods, texture mods, Gibbed help files and such that it defies imagination that you would destroy all of that.
Let's not even get into the fan work like the MEHEM and Citadel ending mods. How about the furious amount of work and hours (all of them great fun, BTW) in ME3 MP? Why would you get rid of these Fan-produced treasures?
Fans have put many hours into this forum and the BSN as a whole - far more hours than BioWare has. Shutting out / down your fanbase does not come across like sound tactical thinking in long term. In fact, it looks to me like you (BioWare) are hiding from the ME3 fallout. You did your best to squelch it, and you know that ME:A is being released soon. You want a clean slate, but do not see what that is going to cost you. Perhaps you don't care.

Ahh, right. I forgot about that.
I think my last playthrough I didn't see it because Steel talked me into siding with the templars.
... Naw, just kidding Steel, you know I'd never side with the templars.
This decision is a slap in the face to the most active and dedicated portion of your fans. You're possibly turning away people who care the most about your work in favor of Twitter followers who are only interested in it when you release a new game.

IKTF. We IT'ers felt that same confused betrayal when we got tossed a few years. A lot of the same people who are complaining about this were laughing as the bouncers tossed us out. I'm actually surprised I'm not feeling more schadenfreude. Very sincere condolences to the rest of the forum though. Even though I'm not a regular here anymore so the closing doesn't really effect me, I know how getting stabbed in the back by Bioware feels. And that's definitely what this decision is: a stab in the back.
That's another reason I don't believe CP (besides, you know, history) when he claims they wanted to shut down the forums over vitriol after DA2 and ME3. We (IT'ers) were the opposite of the rest of the board. We were praising BW as geniuses. While everyone else was spewing venom at them, we were heaping praise, and we were the ones that they kicked to the curb. The story that they were so hurt, in the posterior as the meme goes, by the animosity rings a bit hollow when they do something like that.

There were a lot of great people in that test team I mentioned. Two examples of bugs:
We had one large thread about that ugly door bug in the palace (just before meeting Morrigan) and the door bug in the templar quest. Using such a door would lead to an infinite black loading screen. Everyone could reproduce it, but BW has chosen not to fix these.
Another one: Remember that pride demon in the Wraith of Heaven (the first quest in DAI)? For some people it is impossible to close the rift. For others it was doable. It turns out that to reach the "handle" of the breach (to close it or make the pride demon vulnerable) there is only one tiny spot (that you have to find by accident) that can be used by those with a high mouse resolution (a lot of gamers use these). For those with a mouse where you can change the resolution on the fly, one can simply switch to a lower resolution and all would be well. Others had to use another mouse or restart the game with a lower mouse resolution. However, many "normal" players wouldn't even dream up such a solution. We could reproduce the problem. Yet, BW had chosen not to fix it. Can you believe that? A game breaking bug at the start of the game. They really couldn't care less.

Thing is, without the forums, and not being a member of the social media community, I wonder how folks like me are going to get info about current and future titles?
Using DAI, I was able to gather the intel I could before making an informed purchase, and am pleased with the results. And all the patches and future additions to the game were learned here, plus the streams I was able to attend. Now, I am seemingly left with more questions than answers, and other independent sites will likely not be as moderated as those here.
I do hope Bioware changes their mind; children and all.

As my post count may show,I am not a frequent poster but I have been lurking logged in and not logged in for almost 3 years, ever since I discovered and fell madly in love with the Mass Effect universe, and subsequently Dragon Age.So I am one of the recently made fans of Bioware games.
This news about the forums closing has been crushing and sad for me.I can only imagine what it must feel for people who have been posting on BW forums since the beginning. I regret that I didn't participate more and regret I didn't get to know you guys and I am sad I no longer have this idea to look forward to.
Mass Effect as a franchise is of very personal importance to me because they were the games that got me into gaming even at the "late" age of 22 .They made gaming a dear hobbie and way of life in a time when I had no interests and nothing to be passionate about. It motivated me to do things and even take up volunteer writing news at a gaming website in my country. My personal life later changed in many ways for the better, all because I rediscovered gaming. I found something I loved doing even though it alienated me from most people I knew.(being a gamer and a girl and having friends who are mostly girls and don't game is hard, I still get teased at sometimes for my "nerdy hobbies" but who cares.I am at peace. )
Anyway, I don't wish to be a bore. All I want to say is that BSN /Bioware Forums are to thank. Without this place I wouldn't have fallen so in love with ME and DA despite their flaws. I wouldn't have learnt so much about my favourite characters and lore. I wouldn't have read tips on how to play and best enjoy the games.
This is the place where I would find funny posts and awesome art. This is the place where I could dig up a super long ,6 year old thread and read about Zevran
Bioware 's decision is wrong on so many level, insulting and almost... hostile. I will never understand their reasoning, since it was clearly stated by Conal that it is not financial. This will comeback and haunt them because these sort of marketing moves are the ones that poison a good relationship between company and customer. The trust is gone. I used to respect Bioware and now it's just apathy. They made me lose excitement over the release of the next installment of my favourite game series ever. That tells something. I am not dooming MEA. I might end up loving the hell out of it, heck I even loved Dragon Age 2 .But Bioware? I don't know what to think of them anymore.
All the time I spent here, all the money spent on supporting them by buying merch, the hell I went through to travel across the world to see them at Cons, meet other fans and meet voice actors from their games and this is the "thank you"...
Part of me begs BW to reconsider but at the same time pulling a sudden 180, changing their decision only to show themselves as heros who "listen to and care for the fans" somehow will feel more insulting.
Anyway, I` m not on Facebook, Twitter I don't like, Tumblr I can't even...I may force myself to use Reddit or try the fan forums mentioned here. Either way, Bioware won't hear my feedback.
Good Luck and big hugs to all
Edit: Sorry for any mistakes. English is not my first language and I am writing from my phone.
