What I find especially egregious about the justification of this decision is that they say they interact much with fans elsewhere, but that isn't really true. Look at their Facebook comments and Twitter feeds. There's no meaningful or even casual interaction, just promotion. The extent of interaction that isn't direct pandering is "Thanks!" and "Glad you liked X!" It's entirely substance free. And they suggest Tumblr and conventions as alternatives? It's like they're mocking us. How in the hell are we supposed to use Tumblr like a forum? How in the hell would going to a convention take the place of a discussion forum? The only alternative for dedicated discussion is Reddit, but those subreddits SUCK. They're mostly just pictures of people's merch collections and the rest is usually never game-related at all. It's all very casual and toxic in a way that I think would make the people who complain about the toxicity here faint.
I remember the day my beloved Harry Potter book discussion forum shut down......
Forums are tons more fun than social media.
I hate twitter.
I remember that. Those official forums were actually pretty great, and now there's nowhere for Pottheads to gather online for discussion. It's all scattered about the internet, unorganized and not attracting sizable numbers. There was recently a gathering of Potter fans where I live(a rollerskating party of sorts) and being there made me realize how lame it is that there is no centralized, dedicated discussion forum for the fandom, even though there's still just as much dedication as ever. With a new movie coming out very soon and the second Potter theme park opening(which is also where I live, and also makes me lament the loss of the forum) the fandom is as active as ever. Maybe even more so, since the fans who grew up with Potter and are now adults are very dedicated.
And this is what we can look forward for BioWare's games if they go through with shutting down these forums permanently. The dedicated fans will be scattered to the wind, finding only pockets here and there for discussion.
