Look, I sympathise and understand your point.

But it just sounds like you're saying "there are too many veterans in deeply rooted threads and discussions for a newb to get involved in" + hostility.

That is simply not true. Sure, in almost any forum there are veterans and cliques and it's easy to run into hostility on the internet, but largely if you weren't a jerk and you asked a question around here SOMEONE would answer it very nicely for you and I can attest to this for the years I've been around.

Still not a very compelling reason to wipe us out.

I agree with most of what you're saying. Almost all of the veterans around here are decent and are easy to talk to even if in opposing viewpoints. But there are a few groups that if encountered are very hostile. Especially when the opinion is contrary to their agenda or even more so if the opinion is outside accepted and well worn ruts of travel. I've seen it happen to others and I've encountered it more than once. For me to deal with it required conversational steps that a BioWare representative couldn't take on their own boards.

And to clarify, I don't believe that dev/fan interaction was the only reason for closing the boards either.

So in order to get closer to your audience you're going to shut down the direct line to your audience.

Sounds honestly like you're going to shut down the one place genuine criticism can be had and controlled by you.

This is not considering if there are those who do not partake in some of the communities on the other sites because of their potential toxicity being not controlled or hosted by Bioware.

Not to mention that places like facebook, twitter and youtube all have terrible capabilities in acting as a forum where people can actually talk to one another.

And their site rules can be easily swayed to limit any kind of critique.

What are we supposed to have 160 character maximum conversations with a developer or between each other?

How does that breed any kind of nuance or conversation?

How is that anything but disconnecting?!?!

And that's not even considering the three language differences you have on this site that are dedicated to them. What do they do now?

I wouldn't mind if you just said you can't be bothered to host the site any more as that would make sense, but by removing the best way to talk to a community of like minded individuals along with customer service, tech support and creative works all being propped up by those very people makes absolutely zero sense.

And this'll probably be the last time a criticism can be heard like this as if I were to tweet this then not only would I be over character limit but I would also be drowned by the thousands of other users before twitter auto-deletes the tweet.

This all feels like Bioware is trying to be trendy and niche again, pretending to be a "cool department" and sacrificing usability for trendy points...

I see that this thread has gone way of the rails but i just wanted quote this post from page 1 to show how much i agree with it.

Yeah, there are other ways to communicate with Bioware and other Mass Effect/Dragon Age fans, but not everyone at Bioware is multi-lingual so how do those fans get their voices heard?

I haven't set foot in this form much since the ME3 talk died down but i was hoping to spend more time here after Andromeda is out.  I can understand if Bioware is tired of monitoring these forums but why do they have deleted from the world wide web completely?  I'm sure a dedicated group of fans and modders will work to preserve all meaningful information but what about all the fun discussions that have happened here?

I know i'll miss all the debates about the morals and ramifications on Synthesis.

RIP Official Bioware Forums.

So now I'm curious about this part where devs go elsewhere to get fan feedback or discuss BioWare games or such. Do they actively participate as devs, or are they random user names that no one can tell the identity? Because if they are suggesting there are better places to discuss lore, characters, plots, or various quest puzzles and tech issues, I'd really like a more detailed list of where I can find that kind of discussion. We know it's not going to be Twitter with the character limit, and tumblr is more an individual sounding board, so... where? Is it Reddit? Fan forums? I don't know how Facebook can work for this kind of thing, but maybe?

This might be coming across as passive-aggressive, but it really is honest curiosity.

The devs go to Twitter and Reddit. Twitter doesn't let you post with any depth or nuance and Reddit is one massive echo chamber where dissent is nuked from orbit either from downvotes that make your posts invisible or buttmad moderators who ban you at the slightest "offense".

None of the alternatives have nuance, nuance is subtle, those are not.

It wasn't the off topic forum that was the issue but the off topic posting in many threads. Especially in popular topics and even controversial ones. A lot of agendas and people that want themselves or their point of view to have the dominant voice and don't care how that is accomplished.

It's surprising BioWare is letting go of this community considering the effort, money and time invested but this is the decision they've come to.

Lol, "effort". If just removing everything is effort, then sure.

Serious question, has anything good come about as a result of blood magic in the series thus far? Where blood magic goes, disaster always seems to follow.

My mage warden achieving greatness through it in battle.

Blood ritual saving him and warden joining ritual could also count as blood magic, I guess.

And let's not forget sacrificing Connor's mum.

So derailing of threads and domineering of topics that causes this.

tOYjcRO.gif

Duly noted. Herding cats, too hard, must eradicate.

The issue is too complex to pin to one set of behaviors and we don't have all the information necessary to make an overall assessment.

The most surprising thing to me is the money and time spent developing this community being thrown to waste. Related to that is the one thing that stood out the most to me after the closure of the Off Topic section: The cohesion of the refugee group.  Yes, there was some splintering in the making of their new communities but all in all they came through the purge intact. BioWare/EA helped create those social groups. To throw it all away over dev/fan interaction seems shortsighted but maybe there is a plan. If not, someone is likely going to make some money off this if BioWare/EA isn't.

On a side note, almost everyone in DA2 was so nutty I had lost all sympathy for them.

That's because Kirkwall was a city filled with old, demonic symbols left by Tevinter Magisters in the past. They drew those symbols to try and unseal one of the Forgotten Ones, Xexenbeck or Xebenkeck, who lurks beneath Kirkwall city.

Having a thing like that exerting its influence on an entire population explains the concentration of blood mages, the general hostility in the air and why you find so many demons in your quests.

Now imagine living in the Gallows, under the risk of suffering mental and physical abuse by the hands of templars like Ser Alrik and being haunted by demons everytime you go to sleep...

Yeah.  A couple of the pure renegade runs I did had a lot of things that were cringe-worthy in a good way.

You know, cats like you and themikefest and RedCaesar97 and Pedrolems (sp?) have helped me learn a lot about the dynamics of each game in the series.  I hope to always have access to peeps like you - the cleaners, the support structure for the galaxy's gleeful delusion of peace.  May there always be a market for the things you do.

Baseless accusations! As you all can see, I'm totally unbiased in this. Trust me.

But yeah, as thedancingdruid said, let's stay on topic.

I love that people blame the mages for being crazy in DA2. The Chantry forced them against their will to live in a place that drives them insane. But yeah, the blame's all on the evil crazy mages.

I really liked Meredith's backstory in DA2. It gave so much insight into her motivations and character, but unfortunately, you didn't hear about it unless you initially sided with the Templars.

You also didn't really learn a much about her unless you look at meta sources (world of Thedas iirc?). When I read all of that :holy wtf.

As one of the Dev's that have more or less moved off of here, I am still sad.

I recognize some names but see new ones as well, I wish you all well.

This is a post I can grasp. Thanks, Bryan. I wish you well too.

How disappointing.

The benefit of this forum has grown and is not merely a means of communication between the devs and fans. At one point and time, though, that relationship worked very well through the use of this forum and it would again for future titles. Of course the boards will stagnate in the gaps between major releases and that can lead to the less than valuable content and discussion that has been ongoing for some time now. I still see this place as a far more valuable tool for a game company than other baseless sites.. an official home for the fans and newcomers to discuss, communicate, create, and become friends... such significance would be lost on most social media websites in my opinion.

Well, thanks for the all of the memories and connections this place allowed. I hope such a place continues in some other form.
