IT's bad enough that there are now, 4? different fan forums for the community with one apparently being a splinter from another. The community gets split and all the interesting posters either head to different ones or not bother at all. Some of them are for the seperate games as well.

What is worse is which of these will new people go to when they see 4 plus results for "How to fix shiny hair and scars" new users are how communities stay fresh and grow. It's convinient to visit these forums because you can just log into your origin account. You can also know for sure that the company won't collate information from obscure fan forums that may or may not show up on the first page of google.

to be fair, the splinter group and the one it splintered from were never designed to replace the BSN boards, just off-topic

I went to Dragon Age's Twitter, well here online anyway, I don't have one. I guess I am just old school. It was like a one-sided conversation with dozens of people talking at once.

These forums have to stay open, I still need Hrungr to interpret this, because I am completely lost without translation.

I'd argue that it is mostly moderation or lack thereof. If you have an issue, you can PM a Mod, but they won't read it (unless they are named like Conal) because that's their protocol. At least, this is what I have gathered from various users and personally witnessed. I had a friend who joined these forums and it took two whole months for his account to be cleared for posting by the moderation, 2 months.

Back when the Lobby was open, there was 1 particular user and his/her alt that would get under a lot of people's skin and make the section into a blog about him/her and the mods only ever shut down threads as far as I am aware, but my point is that was the only toxicity that I ever witnessed and were that user and his/her alt properly handled then the Lobby would have been even more of an awesome zone than it already was. Despite that setback, the community as a whole was pretty solidified and able to get along, so while I imagine that the other parts of the forum had more users like that, it probably wasn't all that many.

Inaction breeds toxicity, and that hinged with costs (the mods are third party and paid professionals) probably what is leading to Bioware burning this place to the ground; not the community itself.

Funny thing is Jagex the developers of the MMORPG Runescape use a literal army of F Mods. Who are players that have been deemed good enough to be granted some power to patrol the forums. They have the ability to lock threads, hide posts, move threads to right sub forums and provide 24 hour mutes to players. With particularly troublesome players they can report directly to the head of their Community section for further punishment including multi day mutes our out right bans.

And players if they have a problem with F Mods actions it are given a thread that every couple of days the J mod leader of the community team looks over and decide if the action was appropriate or not. If the F mod is found to be in the wrong anything from basic posts or thread unhidden/unlocks to the F mod suffering from disciplinary actions to out right losing their F mod status.

And the best part is all the F mods are just regular players getting paid no money and do it all for free and they keep the forums pretty well cleaned up. I mean some are a bit to literal with some of the rules and I've clashed with them more then once.  But all Jagex has to do is pay like 3 J mods to be in charge of the forums and to make the large choices like who gets banned for what action and if the F mods stepped over the line or not. The vast majority of the policing how ever is done by the fellow player for free.

Why was this model not followed?

I've only ever even heard of 1 other one (besides the forumotion one that was started after we were kicked off BSN). O_o

mhm that's true.  I just don't know if there's even a precedent for something like that

Happened to a MUD I used to play when I was a teenager. It wasn't a big IP like this, but it was big for what it was. Maybe 50-100k range. It eventually died out exactly that way. It wasn't making enough money for its owners anymore, so they slashed its budget and kept moving its coders to higher priority stuff until too many players quit out of boredom. Then it really wasn't making them money, so they eventually canned it completely.

Community Moderators were a thing, but I think most of them became inactive and Bioware didn't seek to try and replace them. I read a few days ago, that some members were stripped of their moderator status's here, right prior to (or after) the shut down notice without warning of either.

They were. Selene Moonsong is an example of a Community Moderstor who when she logged on noticed that she was no longer one, and a few hours later the blog post announcement came out.

I started my Twitter back in 2011 for the sole purpose of following Casey Hudson for ME3 news. I still only use it for news and tweeting random stuff I like, but that's about it. It's NOT a place for a conversation.

I just want to thank you BSN for everything. It has truly been a pleasure. And, one cannot know true pleasure without a little pain. And, for me, the pleasure here has far outweighed the pain.

For Twitter-savvy people here, do you know if any BioWare people (devs and otherwise) are talking about this crapfest on the platform they ask that we use from now on? I followed Conal Pierse two days ago, but he hasn't said anything in a day. Can anyone point me towards where this is being brought up, if at all?

No, I have seen no tweets about it at all. Even the official Bioware account replied to only about half a dozen people and then has been silent for days.

Well Aaryn Flynn added the Unofficial BSN forum twitter account to his friend list?

So perhaps a "Good Luck , people" gesture?

Or he wants to keep an eye on the community?

That's so sad. I always loved this community. I came back to gaming and Mass Effect after a very long break and I hoped to enjoy this community again.

I know, like the post said, there are other social media to get in touch etc but this forums were different. They were made by people who did something most of the users of those other social media don't: they cared about what they were doing.

I remember users who posted very detailed guides about gaming mechanics and they didn't asking back. They didn't it for the views, to gain followers or "upvotes", they simply did if to help fellow gamers. Like the many users who replied every day to the most basic questions, even though they read it so many times but they still helped those fellow gamers who needed some help.

It was also, at least from my personal experience, a very open minded community. It wasn't like Reddit, since it was mentioned in the original post, where you can't they treat you with suspicion if you share a video you made like even though you are not spamming. People here has always been different and it's sad to know a place like that will be gone soon.

I can also say by my personal experience it's not that easy to get in touch with the other social media mentioned in the post. At least not in the way these forums allowed.

On Twitter you have to deal with an avalanche of data and most things get lost. Not to mention sometimes it's easy for new users to even not have their tweets noticed at all. It happens with new accounts.

On Reddit they are very restrictive about the content and they don't encourage to post your own content because they are suspicious of "self promotion".

It means if someone makes a great walkthrough video or some inspiring fan art it will be difficult for us to see it on Reddit, for example.

Here was different and people was more open minded.

Sorry for my wall of text but I really wanted to share my two cents with you. I will miss the nice persons and the great content I always found on these forums.

Well I only got an iPhone in the Fall of last year when my husband went on hospice to keep in constant contact with the nurses and keep relatives up to date. I really don't use it anymore.

Oh that's what you meant with that Alliance/paladin comment... Condolences. :(

Did Inquisition seriously under-perform that badly?

I don't have any hard numbers but EA's Q4 2015 update to their shareholders says this:

  • For fiscal year 2015 EA was the #1 publisher on PlayStation®4 and Xbox One consoles in the world, driven by the success of Battlefield™Hardline, Dragon Age™: InquisitionFIFA 15NHL®15,Madden NFL 15Battlefield 4™ andFIFA 14.

So, yeah, they are claiming that DAI was a success in their financial reports.

Their legal obligation to their shareholders mean this information is indeed valid.  But it's not much to go on.  We just know that it made more money than it costs.  You'd be surprised how many scumbags in suits will get pissed and cancel further productions on something if it only made one ton of gold and they were expecting to get two from it.

Of course, this doesn't mean that that's the case.  EA could be very happy with its performance.  Or maybe it did indeed earn them the full 2 tons of gold.  Who knows?  Just saying, we still don't know much.

Agreed, it's not much to go on. Would love to get my hands on their subsidiary reports. But, at least the speculation that DAI was a failure can be put to rest.

I'm not a major user of these boards but I come through every couple of days just to see if their are any new updates on ME:A and see what people are talking about. This is a BAD ******* move on Biowares part and I fear the company Is secretly going under.
