That's just classic Bioware. "We're totally firm in our artistic direction, and any fans complaining about it are just entitled whiners. Until we realize we can make money of off them, at which point everything we've said before is moot and anyone questioning it is an entitled whiner".  :)

Yes, It is a symptom akin to unfunny people keep insisting that they are funny

Also, of course gamers are entitled, after all they did pay for the games

Firm in their artistic direction, even when it's been shown they've already gone against this arbitrary rule they set for themselves to redirect criticism.

Precisely because it was never an arbitrary rule, just a means of cutting costs and appealing to/not invoking the rage of the assumed majority. The rest is their always cringe worthy PR speak.

Well I've taken a look at reddit and...

By the Enkindlers, how does anyone find anything in that mess!?

It's a well known fact that the reapers used a copy of the reddit code to turn some geth into heretics.

I wonder if we can make it to 1000 pages by August 26th?  Imagine, a thousand pages of toxicity people.  And someone need to save it too - as a memento - pinned on the front page of every spinoff sites - like a picture of the ancestors. ^_^

Well, I did have one easy source for news about Bioware games and a place to discuss those games. Now they're taking it down.

Doesn't make sense from a customer satisfaction perspective and it comes across as low-budget.

I don't get it.

And no, Bioware, I'm not going to use Twitter, or Facebook, or anything else.

Hmp. That's what I get for not checking in for a few days.

It's a bummer, but I get it. For all that message boards are the ancestors of modern social media, their use has been dwindling for years. The number of loyal diehards can't really keep pace with the legions of users on newer platforms, and every new one stretches the developers thinner. They can't be everywhere, and it only makes sense to be where they can reach the most people and get the most feedback.

If it's any consolation, the cycle doesn't stop here. No doubt someday Reddit, Facebook, and Twitter will be old hat, and those pages will be shut down in favor of focusing on Bioware's Brainstick channel. (That will be when everyone has a wifi stick implanted in their lower skull that delivers information directly into the brain stem. It'll be how my nieces and nephew's generation share naked pictures with their partners.)

In the meantime, raise a glass, and meet Varric in a pub by the Waking Sea.

When people believe the official explanation

Well, there's a video people are linking and after seeing it well. It basically says that shutting down the forums is the first step to closing Bioware, as in, they release MEA, that studio gets shut down, then the SWToR lives for as long that game lives. I'm not so sure about all of them being fired, maybe just becoming EA devs.

I'm not supporting the idea, specially because I don't want Bioware to close but...it doesn't sound far fetched.

It is pretty far-fetched. If Bioware were shutting down, it would be shut down, and the closure of BSN would happen at the same time.

I've seen so many posts from people on the new pop-up alternative forums intimating the same. The forum community extends so much further than just the regular posters, the belligerent trolls or most voracious of fans. There are countless unseen, silent users being tossed aside by this insanity as well, who came here because it was the easiest and most convenient way to access information about the games they were interested. I'm one of them! And now I'm in a position where I have four separate bookmarks on my goddamned bar because as yet, I don't know for sure which one of these alternatives is going to provide the same--if any! :\ It's crappy and inconvenient.

I've been a member since 2011 and I think I only began posting in 2014 when Inquisition came out. I think I'd been reading the forums before, though. Basically, yeah, there is a fair number of people who never post or like but who still read the forums including because of the information like that about bugs, guides and mods as well as news about upcoming games.

Note: Inquisition was not the first game I played; I'd played all of the games in the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series before it came out. I think I also finished both of the Knights of the Old Republic games before then.

Because when companies are in major financial trouble, they never try cost cutting measures before going under, right?

Wow, I didn't even realize this "main" thread existed. Guess I'll have 150 pages to read when I'm bored. I'm reposting this because there's no point rewriting my thoughts.

Reaction 1: "Hey, we decided not to interact here, so now we're going to close this place down because we don't interact here anymore."

A8gom2S.jpg

What the hell? Why does Bioware constantly make such bad decisions, especially concerning PR and this forum? Here's a great idea, let's not have an official forum for our games at all! Even with ME:A coming out fairly soon! It's not like every single other company has one or anything.

But hey, it's okay, "Now we can travel around the world, meeting with you face-to-face at events like PAX, SDCC, and even shows in our own backyard." Because we couldn't travel the world a few years ago? Right, I'm sure all of us are just going to fly all the way to a convention! Because that's plausible. Are they freaking serious? Do they know how preposterous that is to say? And Youtube? Oh, yeah, loads of dev conversations and fan conversation happens there, right?  *sigh* I wonder if they had this in mind since they closed off-topic...

And they have this backwards. They seem to think all this forum was ever for, all all gaming forums are for, is to talk to the devs. What about basic community interaction itself? That's the core, always has been. The only place they mentioned that that could possibly take place in any meaningful way is Reddit, and I have my issues with its style for this sort of thing. More importantly, we shouldn't have to go anywhere else. Having an official forum is standard for a reason.

Reaction 2: This is incredibly disheartening, and showcases Bioware's utter disconnect they have with fans. I don't do social media, I don't care about social media. You can't have any worthwhile discussion on Twitter. Reddit's layout is odd and impersonal. I find this forum much more social, to be honest. You can actually get a sense of people's personalities.

More importantly, I only go here! I know people here, sort of, anyway. And since I'm basically a recluse, it's important to me to have some kind of interaction beyond my family, talking about things I like. This is ridiculous! I can't be the only one here who prefers this forum. I actually find it much, much more pleasant than most of the internet. But Bioware doesn't care about their community, they just want to be applauded on Twitter. They can't just let their community continue on here? Is that really too much? Don't punish us for the devs not visiting. That's not our fault.

And of course, this situation is perfect for them and terrible for us, in the sense that the people who love social media are the ones less likely to voice any concern, and the ones who don't - the ones who go here, can't voice concern.

This makes me a very, very sad Banshee.

This never felt unfair to me. I can't be the only one who has used the forums in the past as a way to talk with fellow fans, not caring much about directly engaging with Bioware staff. No offense!
I imagined Bioware staff in much the same way a lazy agnostic would imagine a god(s). They're somewhere out there, but eh, who cares...I want to reply to some fan's posts.

No, being here was hurting you, you just didn't realize it. Trust us, we're doing this for your own good.

...This is the kind of logic they think we're stupid enough to accept.

I thought the concensus on this thread was that maintaining a forum was a minor cost?  Suddenly, when people want to imagine Bioware is going under, the whole forum-maintainance thing costs so much that removing it could support a company spending millions developing 2-3 games in tandem.  Wow.  Well, I hope the admins of these new BSNs have deep pockets, is all I can say.

BW is the Heinrich Himmler of Thedas? Doesn't that imply that after playing the monster for years, they'll suddenly get a total personality rewrite and be a decent person because fanservice? Sadly, I doubt BW's ever going to be good again.

     Cool strawman, bro.  No one said anything about it supporting the entire goddamn company.  When there's financial troubles, people cut back on all sorts of minor things because minor things add up.  This is the equivalent of somebody struggling to pay their bills taking their cans down to the recycling plant for an extra few bucks instead of throwing them in the trash like they usually do.

And for the record, I doubt anyone here has any idea what BSN costs BW.  If you don't work in the field, you don't know jack.  I remember when Blizzard released some numbers on what it costs to keep WoW servers going and it was literally over 100 times what I had expected.

Furthermore, no one said they want it to happen or that it is happening, some of us said that it's a possibility.

LOL, I just remembered got banned from the DA wiki after 1 post because I jokingly called him "the archmage of retconjuration."  Seems they're delicate little snowflakes too.

Thanks. At least it's nothing big, and hey, bsn.boards has a MEA pubic hair thread and the replies where what you'd expect. So it seems that this community of ours, with all of its quirks, it's going to live on.

Which makes me wonder, if Bioware goes back on this decision later on and creates new forums, will they ban people promoting the fan sites that are spawning now?

Also, someone should save and archive the Tali's sweat thread. I think we need that for reference. (This was not a joke.) ...or I'll google it now, see if I can find it.
