I'm not sure what to make of this news.  I'm not much for posting, but I did meet a lot of people through the old BSN, and I still come to this site for news and updates even though I don't typically log in to do it (since I'm just lurking :P ).  I like having BioWare news centralized; I don't want to have to glean bits and pieces one at a time from FB, Twitter, Reddit, etc.  Personally, I find Twitter and Reddit hard to follow conversations on.

And I'm concerned about how just plain bad this makes BioWare look to a lot of people.  I'm not sure what they think the ultimate upside is to closing this forum.  And...while there's still nothing out there quite like Mass Effect, we live in a time where there is an overabundance of good games/new releases people are hyped about.  Between now and Andromeda there will be new releases for Deus Ex, Final Fantasy, Destiny, and XCOM, as well as highly anticipated titles like ReCore and Scalebound.  In other words, if people become disillusioned with BioWare over this, they have lots of other options. :\  I remember when you were lucky to get one good new game a year...the market is saturated now.  My husband regularly bemoans how selective he has to be now about which games he plays, because there are too many good/appealing ones and not enough time.  And I worry that closing the forums is a move that ignores how much competition there is out there for gamers time and money.

I support BioWare, and will continue to do so, but I find this decision very bizarre.  Does not compute.  All this being said, I'm just a lurker, to take my opinion for whatever that's worth.

Worse than that is down votes. If you have an unpopular opinion good luck getting it thru to devs.

Lets look back at this forum after DA2.

I remember posting a very long essay worth post on why I thought the playersexual romances in the game sucked and that characters should have their own likes and dislikes along with preferences for what kind of character they'd go for romantically.

David Gaider showed up and basically rinsed me in front of everyone for having my opinion. Made me look bad in front of a lot of people for feeling the way I did. Naturally he got supported a lot by people because he's a developer so people will naturally support him for his position and there were a lot of people that were happy they could romance whoever they wanted with reckless abandon.

Yet many people continued to push that playersexual romances were dumb. A lot of people felt this way. And what happened in Inquisition? Playersexual romances were a thing of the past and we got characters with their own preferences.

Well 1. Don't trash on my opinion so much if you agree with it and 2. Had that been on Reddit back in the day my opinion along with many others would've been down voted to hell and no Biodev would've ever seen it. You'd continue to get terrible romances in games where the player could have a field day doing whatever in the most artificially feeling way imaginable.

Again, Reddit isn't fit for this.

Is it Festivus already?

Not that I disagree with the broad point that you're making about the downvote system.

I've seen so many posts from people on the new pop-up alternative forums intimating the same. The forum community extends so much further than just the regular posters, the belligerent trolls or most voracious of fans. There are countless unseen, silent users being tossed aside by this insanity as well, who came here because it was the easiest and most convenient way to access information about the games they were interested. I'm one of them! And now I'm in a position where I have four separate bookmarks on my goddamned bar because as yet, I don't know for sure which one of these alternatives is going to provide the same--if any! :\ It's crappy and inconvenient.

This sort of reminds me of the whole "Shepard is straight" debacle:

Bioware: Sorry, we've decided Shepard is canonically straight.

Fans: What about FemShep & Liara?

Bioware: ...Asari are monogendered. It doesn't count.

Fans: You do realize mono means "one" and not "the absence of" right?

Bioware: ...why you gotta bust balls.

And if I remember correctly, Chris Priestly also got pretty harsh with people who brought up these same points on the forum. But, just as with the playersexual romances, Bioware changed their tune by the next game.

lol. I remember how Bioware confirmed or talked about how they talked about the 'playersexual' term because romances needed to be fair only to backtrack that all the romances were bisexual once they realized how bad it actually made them look to use it.

You are absolutely right on that point. As the years have gone by we have been spending more time on other sites and spaces and less time on our own boards. This was unfair to those of you who use our forums.

We took a hard look at how we were engaging our community, and made the difficult decision to focus on fostering conversations in these new spaces, and to close our forums.

This never felt unfair to me. I can't be the only one who has used the forums in the past as a way to talk with fellow fans, not caring much about directly engaging with Bioware staff. No offense!

I imagined Bioware staff in much the same way a lazy agnostic would imagine a god(s). They're somewhere out there, but eh, who cares...I want to reply to some fan's posts.

Well I've taken a look at reddit and...

By the Enkindlers, how does anyone find anything in that mess!?

Maybe the devs grow a liking to Reddit, idk honestly. But I personally detest that place, just the looks ugh...

The way comments are handled, It looks like a programming interface, it just hurts my eyes.

That's just classic Bioware. "We're totally firm in our artistic direction, and any fans complaining about it are just entitled whiners. Until we realize we can make money of off them, at which point everything we've said before is moot and anyone questioning it is an entitled whiner".  :)

Firm in their artistic direction, even when it's been shown they've already gone against this arbitrary rule they set for themselves to redirect criticism.

Hmp. That's what I get for not checking in for a few days.

It's a bummer, but I get it. For all that message boards are the ancestors of modern social media, their use has been dwindling for years. The number of loyal diehards can't really keep pace with the legions of users on newer platforms, and every new one stretches the developers thinner. They can't be everywhere, and it only makes sense to be where they can reach the most people and get the most feedback.

If it's any consolation, the cycle doesn't stop here. No doubt someday Reddit, Facebook, and Twitter will be old hat, and those pages will be shut down in favor of focusing on Bioware's Brainstick channel. (That will be when everyone has a wifi stick implanted in their lower skull that delivers information directly into the brain stem. It'll be how my nieces and nephew's generation share naked pictures with their partners.)

In the meantime, raise a glass, and meet Varric in a pub by the Waking Sea.

Yes, It is a symptom akin to unfunny people keep insisting that they are funny

Also, of course gamers are entitled, after all they did pay for the games

Precisely because it was never an arbitrary rule, just a means of cutting costs and appealing to/not invoking the rage of the assumed majority. The rest is their always cringe worthy PR speak.

I wonder if we can make it to 1000 pages by August 26th?  Imagine, a thousand pages of toxicity people.  And someone need to save it too - as a memento - pinned on the front page of every spinoff sites - like a picture of the ancestors. ^_^

Well, I did have one easy source for news about Bioware games and a place to discuss those games. Now they're taking it down.

Doesn't make sense from a customer satisfaction perspective and it comes across as low-budget.

I don't get it.

And no, Bioware, I'm not going to use Twitter, or Facebook, or anything else.

Well, there's a video people are linking and after seeing it well. It basically says that shutting down the forums is the first step to closing Bioware, as in, they release MEA, that studio gets shut down, then the SWToR lives for as long that game lives. I'm not so sure about all of them being fired, maybe just becoming EA devs.

I'm not supporting the idea, specially because I don't want Bioware to close but...it doesn't sound far fetched.
