<pops in after getting some sleep>

I normally don't return when I say I'm done with a thread, but this has been eating at me.

Conal, I have a couple of questions if I may.

First, I want to thank you for trying to help me with the "banter bug" from DA:I. I know that we weren't able to figure things out, but the troubleshooting from you was appreciated. :)

Secondly, I'm sorry you have to be the "bad guy" here. I don't believe in shooting the messenger and I know you're just doing your job.

Okay, now here are my questions: While I can understand closing the forums, I can't understand the deletion. Why is everything going to be erased? I believe you when you say the forum closure isn't about money. So, why is this site not being saved as read-only for more than 2 months?

I've been a BioWare fan for almost 20 years. I have loved the games, despite the frustrating bugs I've had to deal with. Things like DLC problems with every ME and DA game I have; conflicts between two DLCs causing a lockup (DA2,) and the "banter bug" in DA:I are things that don't hurt my belief in the company. I don't do company bashing, since I know that is people I would be tearing into.

This move has shaken my faith in the company as a whole. Completely. I stress that it isn't the forum closure that has left me feeling betrayed, it's the deletion. Frankly, it feels like the decision makers behind this don't care about the years of posts, guides, tips, bug fixes and friendship that makes the forums what they are. Sure, I can move to a fansite (I've gotten a few offers, waiting to see what my group is going to do,) but it just feels like the fans are being outright shunned by the forum heads that decided that this was a good idea. Fans that have simply lurked for years are coming out and the forum community is larger than I thought. So I'm not just referring to the people that actually post often.

I mean this as with total respect as a fan: Why is the company nuking this site?

Taking it down seems unnecessary.

I can totally understand why they're closing it. But taking it down warrants more explanation.

Oh, it's not the other users that we're being unkind to.

I wasn't really being unkind tho. I mean it kind of looks like mocking, but to be honest, Conal Pierce truly could be a Senpai irl. We don't know. I mean what if he's hot

I will look into doing something like this.

wouldn't it be possible to sticky a thread where everybody can check out the forums in a thread and decide where to go/try out a forum?

And not to discuss something 1637929035.gif off-topic 1637929035.gif like Bioware games.

Considering that this is neither the topic nor the focus of this thread, yes, that is off-topic.

You are welcome to have those discussions in other threads dedicated to those topics.

It kind of is the worse part. Yeah, closing the BSN sucks but having them fully delete it--it feels like way more of an f-you, we really don't care.

It's a bit hard to read all this. Obviously it is, I suppose, at 160-something pages, but I get the sense there are some deletions that have left a few gaps in context. Sometimes those are the most interesting bits. Ah, well. I definitely think closing the forums is a bad idea. It will probably turn out badly for everyone involved. Deleting all the data seems downright petty, though. That's some next-level scorched earth policy, in internet community terms. It gets rid of all the evidence of BioWare's past good deeds.

Sort of seems like they might want to keep a public record of those, given the likely reception to all this.

Out of curiosity, I logged into my tumblr and typed "mass effect" into the search to see what came up.

Now I've seen Tali using anal beads, I hope you're happy Bioware.

I would like to thank you for your service. Throwing yourself on that handgrenade was very brave. Better you than me, my friend, better you than me.

may i suggest you read https://forum.biowar...8#entry20425336

i don't want to be in Cyonan's forum because here are lot of people that still don't like me, ranting on me about my past are here at bsn.boards.net too. i prefer to not sign up here and get bullied over it. safetry is important for me. don't like to fight with anyone, even with Cyonan. i'm sorry, Sofa.. but i'm not joining.

Is that what you meant to link? I only ask because looking through it... it doesn't look like the hostility is coming from Cyonan's forum... or the other alternatives, either. It kind of looks the other way around. Which makes it an odd thing to tell someone to read just before making some strange claims about safety.

Pack a lunch. Literally dozens of people have asked the same questions, and we've seen nothing but chilly silence.Probably because the official reason is a bald-faced lie.

I'm trying very hard not to sound bitter here. So forgive me if I don't sound quite like myself. I won't even lie; I spent the better part of 24 hours yesterday crying off and on. This deletion feels like such a slap in the face, and sadly, I agree with you. I'm not putting this on any poor dev that has to deal with this fallout. This is purely on The Powers That Be, the "suits" of the company.

FWIW, this has nothing at all to do with Conal being able to answer my question or not. Nothing I say is on him. This is a night of tears and confusion that's pouring out here.

I'm betting the explanation is that the forum heads as well as some BioWare exces were sick and tired of the bad reputation of the forums. Some of the devs I've spoken with got burned out very quickly. They acknowledged the reasonable posters are there, but the trolls are draining. I'm betting the forum heads have been disgusted too with things like Tail's sweat (no judgment from me; whatever inflates your rubber ducky,) and the amount of Rule 34 that has reigned here in the past. Sadly, the people that pushed for this move would rather just nuke it all.

That hurts, far more than I thought it would. I think about posts from Allan, from Sheryl Chee hanging out with the fans. I think about the "What did you do today?' In the ME forums and the folks that made me feel so welcome (waves to themikefest among others.) I think about the transgendered members of the forums patiently explaning what it's like to be in their shoes. One kid (he said he was 17 and he was straight) wanted to know more. I hooked him up with the links to GLAAD and PFlag.

I think about all of the history, philosophy and personal stories that will be lost forever. Destroying so much good due to so little bad. I agree that a few of the posters over the years have made me sick with the way they sometimes talk to the devs and the writers. It can be hard to see anything else. These days, I notice that kind of talk is really frowned upon by the community at large and folks will get reported. From what I've seen over the last 3+ years I've been active on the site, this isn't the same sort of group that will allow things like 'You should have been aborted' to go without notice.

I know that Conal and other devs are reading this thread (waves to Bryan and Allan,) but I know that people making this call don't seem to care. Not to mention that this is going to hurt their PR far more than it's going to help, at least imho.

I do respect the men and women at BioWare. It's not easy having controversial content on top of a controversial publisher. No one deserves the awful and disgusting things that a few posters said to them. I just can't respect the men and/or women that decided it was better to destroy it all, and then think that these social media sites will be a substitute.

/end sad, confused and hurt rant.

I've been reading this thread since the day it happened so I've seen every single page. I literally made an account just to post this.

I'm so sorry you guys are losing a place you called home, I genuinely hope you guys can find another place and continue discussions together!!

Best of luck!!!!

Don't worry we may scatter to the four winds (or 5 or so fan made forums) when this one closes but we will return!..err somewhere else like a bad.. erm.. itch..maybe?

Some of the thread closures make no sense. Calling out Chris Priestly for his tweet insulting the BSN seems to fit in this forum. So does the thread joking about homeless/jobless mods. I thought that was both a funny and on-topic thread.

Personally, I think there's many reasons to use social media and few to use this mode of communication. First, social media doesn't cost a dime. Second, social media can be regulated and controlled to a certain extent. Third, the forum is complex with complex interactions which require resources and attention. Of which Bioware has limited its resources and attention to respond too. Finally, Bioware doesn't have a direction for this form of communication.

But that's just my opinion... I'm more than willing to be wrong. Would love to be wrong. Bring it.

Lol Conal Pierse has time to debate semantics on what is off topic posting but not actually answer what the community is asking. Classic.

To be fair, I doubt he'd be allowed to and it wouldn't serve any real purpose. But it feels indicative of the relationship BioWare has with this place.

The initial reception was pretty brutal, especially as I remember that there were a lot of complaints about the high scores NWN was getting from reviewers, but by the time SoU and HotU came out, the regulars were mostly mellow and constructive, and the devs were pretty active, as I recall. Or maybe I'm just nostalgic for Neverwinter Wednesdays.

I don't remember that at all, but then I loved NWN at release. I don't think I complained about anything until patch 3 when they broke friendly fire.

Luckily, back then you got to choose which version of the game you ran, so I ran NWN 1.02 for years.

Even if the devs want to use social media instead of posting here, fine.

But why kick us to the curb when there's a thriving community of players who want to TALK TO EACH OTHER?

The moderation could be better, obviously, but why nuke the baby with the bathwater?

Jos Hendricks from the Edmonton studio has an account over at the new BSN site, to 'listen'. I mean, that's fine, but man, it's such a shame there isn't one single, centralised forum that Bioware staff could visit and 'listen', instead of having to make accounts at various fan sites. On that point, staff will be making accounts at the various splinter fan sites they've forced people out to, won't they? I mean, that only seems balanced (and necessary if the company line about 'caring about fans' and 'valuing feedback' actually means anything.)

Once again, this is a reminder to please obey the site rules and not derail this thread. While the boards are closing, that does not mean the rules are no longer in effect. Nor is it a reason to act in a discourteous or disruptive manner towards your fellow posters.

I'm sorry, but you have basically told every single member here - all owners and fans of bioware products, note - that their opinion, views, dedication, 'fandom' for want of a better word is pointless and unwanted and you expect them to still be mindful of the rules and not derail a topic?

There are 24 days left of this forum, and a few months before its entire existence- including some 5000 posts by me, larger dedicated to celebrating these games in a friendly and positive way possible along with many others - is gone.

Why would people care? Bioware plainly don't. I understand you are only the messenger, but if a company can really annoy and ****** of a 36 yr old father of two who has spent quite a a lot of money and their free time buying and promoting the ganes through their posts then i would suggest you may be doing the wrong thing here.

I was interested in andromeda, mainly through the posts and discussions here.
That has now likely been relegated to 'oh, it came out last year? Might check it out.' I sm certainly going to be unlikely to be cross posting on other forum about it either.

Bravo bioware, bravo.

I remember when BioWare would introduce characters to us one at a time...way before the game was expected and we would fill hundreds of pages with wild speculations.

I'm finding it way too amusing that you of all people post a pic of a guy in a bra

I am disappointed that you broke character.

Considering that this is neither the topic nor the focus of this thread, yes, that is off-topic.

You are welcome to have those discussions in other threads dedicated to those topics.

Which you will then lock or delete for being Off Topic.

Hate to write it but cost versus benefit ratio. Keeping the forum even in an archived state takes resources and attention. Things break and thing go bust. That means staff have to be devoted to its maintenance. From what we as the fans have seen the powers that be, where ever or who ever they are, don't want to expend those resources or attention. Why? Why would you. If there's no direction then there's no reason to sink in more resources.

Why anger the fans? Again, what's the risk? A few hundred to maybe a thousand? It's a risk but with little downside. Spin it to say we are being more responsive on an individual basis aka social media. Personal connection and the like. That personal connection breeds recommendations and in the end brings in money. It's consumer psychology at its simplest forms.
