Since everyone is posting youtubes and random crap, I sacrifice this as tribute:

fMmPKth.jpg

I miss the "funny picture" threads.

This made me laugh so hard for some reason, thank you. Also, and this is odd, when I went to like the post I had already liked it and I was somehow unawhare of this. What kind of dark magic are you wielding Rifneno?

That is actually a valid point. It's pretty cool that this stupid, stupid, stupid (did I mention how stupid closing the BSN is) decision has brought together so many people that never really interacted before to wallow in their mutual misery.

Damn. I used that in an MEA thread... which has been closed.

i am so tired... i read all those pages full of posts here on this topic...

it would be half bad if they leave it in read-only mode. That way it will not be wasted.

Others would not be so angry... still not smart decision to close official forum.

It is like arrow on the knee or something...

I've actually always been disappointed that there is no Thane in that one. Find me good gif with Thane and I will be your slave. :P

I think it is important that we don't stray too off-topic in here though, to the point where the thread is in danger of being closed (which it will be once the 26th rolls on round. Lolololololol. ). Just so people that haven't had the chance to express their opinion on how competently ridiculous this is, can do so.

Speaking of Thane... look at Lose Your Mind Thread...  ;)

Well BSN is shutting down milk production too so no milk.

Good! Save the cows teats! Poor things.

I have seen twitter posts where the posters actively pray for cancer to kill one of my favorite Youtubers.  Hundreds of them.  I have seen YouTube comment sections that advocate raping the woman making the video.  I have seen Reddit pages that are actively abusing entire groups of people.  So yeah, I would say that other places are every bit as bad as your making this place out to be.

Some of the comments I have seen on youtube videos have been 10x worse than anything I have ever seen here. It makes me think that they don't read the comments that are left on their videos? I mean they really mustn't if they think it's a good idea to offer that as an alternative once the BSN is closed, which in itself doesn't lend much credence to the whole, "we remain committed to our community and will always be here to listen, share, and support you," spiel that they are giving us. Because what dev is going to set foot in that cesspit to sift though all the crap?

Anyone remember when Popular Science closed their comments sections? Several other news organizations and magazines followed their lead. They cited a study that found that the comments section was bad for science. The study showed that:

"But even a fractious minority wields enough power to skew a reader's perception of a story, recent research suggests. In one study led by University of Wisconsin-Madison professor Dominique Brossard, 1,183 Americans read a fake blog post on nanotechnology and revealed in survey questions how they felt about the subject (are they wary of the benefits or supportive?). Then, through a randomly assigned condition, they read either epithet- and insult-laden comments ("If you don't see the benefits of using nanotechnology in these kinds of products, you're an idiot" ) or civil comments. The results, as Brossard and coauthor Dietram A. Scheufele wrote in a New York Times op-ed:
Uncivil comments not only polarized readers, but they often changed a participant's interpretation of the news story itself."

Comment sections and forums are uniquely suited to breed toxic comments that might sway people to a negative mindset they might not have held otherwise. The fact that it's so easy to comment and that polarizing comments are so much more popular makes this a difficult problem to control and moderate. It appears that polarizing comments are given more weight than they are due and this gives disproportionate power of persuasion to those that hold extreme views. Closing off avenues of easy criticism might just become more common-place in the future.

Some years ago one of my favorite forums, television without pity, closed down. We found a new home on another website that isn't the same but is good enough that most people made the move. It'll be okay.

Now I may be wrong, but all I get from this is that BioWare doesn't want people to read other people's criticism of their games because they don't want to lose the sales from people that are easily swayed in a particular direction.

How does closing the BSN solve that? People can still post negative comments on all the other alternatives that we were given. All you have to do is type it up in a google search and it's all there, ready to be read and absorbed by anyone willing, just as it would be if they came to the BSN to read it. Bioware have zero control of what someone puts on their personal blog on tumblr. At least on here they can do damage control if they wanted to. To me, it's all so completely contradictory.

I would like to point out that in Conal's OP he never said anything about the BSN being closed down due to its "Toxic" (I hate this word now) atmosphere. I do personally think that that has something to do with it even though I don't feel like the BSN is Toxic myself, but according to the official representative of BioWare (which means we can leave out anything that Gaider and Priestly have to say) it doesn't, which makes it speculation at this point.

In the end, if that is BioWare's reasoning, then it's all kinds of idiocy.

Thanks. I came up with it while I was scouring the series for subtext and stuff. I'm still trying to decide if it's on purpose. I wouldn't think so, but it fits so well...

Also, I use the dark magic of the dancing honey badger (in spoiler for Spirit Vanguard)
