No, this was not a monetary decision. It also was not an easy one for us to make.

We understand that there are people who use and love these boards. And like them, we are sad to see them go. However, many of our players and staff now use other sites and networks outside of these boards, and we want to foster these interactions and support the great fan communities our players have built.

As always, we are committed to our players, and will continue to seek out and solicit their feedback. All of you are why we make games and what we love about gaming. This is the end of an era, but we will always, always listen to our players.

No monetary decision ! That's great news
You say you will always listen to your players, but players want to listen to each other too ! That's exactly what we were doing here.

What is the issue with keeping the forums running on their own, just, what is it ? We want to know if there is an actual real reasonable reason. Tell us please

I feel so sorry for you, that's one hell of a position you've been put at

We aren't suggesting you use Twitter, or Facebook, or any other platform that you don't want to. Each has its advantages and disadvantages, and we encourage our players and studio members to use the sites that suit their preferences.

There are many places where you can still have in-depth discussions about lore, such as the wikis, fan run community boards. And yes, there is even Reddit, which while these discussions may sometimes get buried on the main subreddit, there is nothing precluding the creation of a lore or character-specific subreddit.

The discussions you are referring to are already happening in many other spaces and in many other forms. Some ephemeral and quick, others in-depth and at length.

We understand and appreciate that the people who use these boards enjoy them, but there are a lot of great things out there waiting. And while we are sad to see them go, we are hopeful for the future, and remain committed to talking with and listening to our community.

The problem is you are shutting down the offical community.  The fan run ones will only last as long as the fans want to keep supporting them.  This was the place to go for offical news and updates.  Most of us already have a presence on other social media but we come here to discuss the games.

How are you going to listen to the community in dozens of third party sites?

Help me understand. Because many players use other sites this one must be shut down. Many players use this site exclusively. Many players use this site as well as other sites. If there is another site that is comparable to this, it would be great if you could share it with us.
Other sites do not several the same purpose. Other sites don't promote bio ware in the same way as this one does. Other sites don't provide the level of independent discussion this one does....

Honestly, from a mature player and long time Bioware fan and staunch defender, I am heartbroken. This feels like a total slap in the face to me. I cannot express my upset.

may as well make one last post so here it goes:

lol, you really are full of garbage, i fear you cant be sitting on masterpieces of games if you wanna avoid complaints this hard, perhaps you should be put out of your misery and absorbed into the nebulous mess of EA sooner rather than later ^^

This seems like one of those times that a business - - normally a game one - - makes a choice based on what's trendy or what they feel like is what their consumers want and is always a terrible choice.

Anyway, who's starting the fan board? I'd do it, but my knowledge of Bioware games is limited to KotOR and Mass Effect. I have a harder time getting into fantasy.

Fan-run forums, blogs and websites are all great in theory, but they can also be incredibly transient in nature. A popular blog or website or youtube channel or twitter account or FB page/group lives and dies, in many cases, by its creators' or admins' commitment to maintaining it. The Bioware official forums stand as the one truly stable place for players to reliably find information and discourse (and ironically, without need of any dev input most of the time!)--and that's evidenced by how many people still frequent these boards even between announcements and releases. I just cannot grasp the reasoning behind this in the slightest; every time I try to make sense of it, all I come up with is something that is ill-conceived at best, and condescending at worst.

They often also fall victim to dubious moderation thanks to cronyism and quickly devolve into clique warfare. Which is what happened in the BSN splinter forum I used to be a member of. Ironically it's also what happened on the original splinter forum, which was the reason behind the creation of the second of which I was a part of.

With all due respect you might want to retreat back in the shadow for a while...  You've made your decision public and now we're grieving.   Feeding us platitudes in a vain attempt to defuse the whole thing after the fact is just adding insult to injury. <_<

Conal is adding significantly to the discussion.

You may be upset like all of us, but turning this into a "rant/grieving" only isn't helpful IMO.

On that note, I would like to understand why, if it's not monetary, why they are shutting it down.

I guess the writing was on the wall when Off-topic was closed down with a not so convincing motivation for it and now we have the whole forum being closed down with a not so convincing motivation as well.

Only we were hoping (and probably still hope) that someone was going to reconsider his or her decision.

I've never been a very active user on here and would mostly just pop up in short bursts. Getting my fill of this place tends to be quite easy and go quite fast.

Even got surprised of how different it all looked after having taken a long break from the BSN format that was before.

It's still a pretty nice place as a whole and a very useful one if you're unsure about the lore in the games, how to get past certain sections in the games or just how to solve technical problems that you can't find a solution to anywhere else.

It was nice as long as it lasted and since it was since the early 2000's it's still a while too.

I've come to know a few very good people on here too.

Conal, who is adding significantly to the discussion, has communicated that the reasoning behind the decision is that Bioware is committed to listening to their fans anywhere but on a forum dedicated to listening to their fans.

no he isn't.  Everything he's said has been at best contradictory, at worst just nonsense.

And they are shutting it down because they are embarrased/preempting a meltdown after ME:A/it actually is financial

take your pick

How is Conal really adding to the discussion? Suggesting sub-par replacements that really aren't replacements at all because EA doesn't feel like supporting its own player base any more?

There's plenty of other blogs in the sea! You'll find some new forum in no time! You're too good for the Twitter thread! Have you lost weight? You look terrific!

Wow, I am still crying at the thought of all of this disappearing. I have been here for years. I have no idea what I will do not being able to read all of the lengthy discussions on here, most essay length and full of in-depth lore.

To, Conal, with a mere 245 posts, how could you possibly know how we feel?

We are still debating Loghain, 6+ years later, and, you know what, I still relish reading the arguments. A thread was also recently discussing how anyone could side with the Templars, in particular, the knight-commander in Kirkwall more than 5 years after that game's release.

I do not come here to give feedback, or gossip, or flail around hoping for scraps of news. I have always relied on this for a daily respit from life's troubles, protected by anonymity, and the reassurance that there are fans like me who play these games possibly not just because we want to, but because we need to.

I would just like to wake up now and find this was all a bad dream.

Because there's literally nowhere else that can hold conversation like what is had here, Bioware can expect to NOT get any input from me on these other sites.

I'm far more likely to just stop contributing anything to Bioware except the occasional tweet to Barrett Rodych since he's a friend. And we talk about all things not Bioware, naturally.

Off Topic things.

This is just so incredibly daft.

Can't hold a discussion on Tumblr and Neogaf they want you to have a non-gmail/hotmail/outlook/other webmail domain to sign up for it.

The wayback machine can archive stuff for those who want the forum archived. Not sure how you prompt it to add more stuff though. All this knowledge lost :(
