I don't think there's any sort of snobbery in regards to not liking romance content in general. It's just that BioWare's romances are so poorly written, fail to tie in to the main plot at all, and have so little actual content that it's a wonder why so many people are so heavily invested in them, especially in comparison to the rest of the game/s and everything else they have to offer.

 

BioWare's romance content isn't amazing even when comparing it to other love stories in videogames.

 

The kind of snobbery I see more often is the whole "romance is mature but sex scenes are immature" mindset. Except for when BioWare does them of course. I'm still waiting for the reasoning as to why Cassandra's romance arc is so mature and tasteful but Yennefer's is somehow tacky and childish, for example.

Imagine if people started treating ME as some kind of pet raising simulator after being able to buy fish and a hamster for Shepard's cabin in ME2, with 5+ topics about on the front page at any given moment. That gives you another idea of how absurd all this romance discussion is.

Can I just ask why the bloody hell my post from last night was deleted, and why they're allowed to delete something without even telling me why they did it or that they did it at all? That's complete BS. How am I even supposed to know what I did "wrong"? It was just a post trying to ignore the weird stuff happening last night, with a spoilered picture of some likes, a reply to a picture of a puppy, a reply to Nefla's video, pineapple, and then some on-topic stuff about the closure. Was I just the unhappy victim of a mass-deletion? Because I can't find a good reason why my post isn't there anymore.

I don't think it's poor writing at all, people love romances for various reasons whether that it enhances a character or they just want a good love story.

Welp, even though the purge of the Off Topic section was enough to stop me constantly visiting this place, it's still a shame to see this happening. Even though the forums had cultivated a stereotype of being toxic and the like (something I feel was unfair and that the perception itself bred even further 'toxicity' and the like) I still enjoyed my time here. There were/are many genuinely funny and engaging users. The high dev participation was also pretty neat and I loved seeing them pop about.

 

Sure, there were loons but this is the internet and loons are friggen everywhere.

 

That Mass Effect Deception thread was one of my favourites to be a part of. Good fun.

I vaguely remember an introduction thread that either he posted or was posted on his behalf shortly after he was hired. Then we never heard anything from him again.

Actually, pineapple was an attempt to get back on topic last night (where I am). Someone asked who liked pineapple to change the topic to something better than personal insults. Most of those posts are gone now, though. You know, the productive ones where people weren't giving in to argument. Not the ones disgracing other users.

 

Anyway, it closes on the 26th (probably as early as possible). I still can't wrap my head around Bioware thinking it will be better to have no central location for fans to congregate, to hype their own games for free, to find big-fixes and make guides that encourage people to stay and buy DLC, somewhere they can control us to some extent unlike the great abyss of the internet, and that they somehow think the pros of that outweigh the cons.

 

But then again, I think I'm glad I don't understand it.

With BioWare's more recent games I feel like the whole thing is written poorly and the plot doesn't even tie into itself let alone into the romances still I like content that has a lot of dialogue and that gives me more insight into my companions and my character.

The romances take up a lot more time and are a lot more integrated into the story than the 5 seconds of buying a fish so your analogy is lacking. As for why people discuss romance more than they discuss combat...well there's only so much you can discuss about combat even if you love it and spend a lot of time fighting in your games. "Hey, I shot some guys and it was cool/difficult/easy/they exploded!" where does the discussion go after that? Combat is also pretty universal between games of the same style while lore, story elements and dialogue vary wildly. Romance, characters, lore, and other story elements are things that can be discussed and speculated on at length. If the combat in a game is good then I consider that icing on the cake but I will slog my way through combat I hate to get to story and dialogue. On the other hand, a game can have the best, combat in the world and little to no story, characters, etc...and I have zero interest. Give me a Telltale game over something like CoD any day.

We've diagnosed the problem multiple times in this very thread, Kefka.

The BSN was fine. You need to come to terms with the fact that wherever you choose to hang your hat on these internets, you'll find people who disagree with you. Probably most people, in your particular case.

Instead of throwing tantrums, getting weird, and gloating when a well-loved and irreplaceable community resource gets trashed, maybe you should just stop posting here. Like you've promised to do on more than one occasion.

Comparing the schoolboy atmosphere of the one ... with the cruelty and corruption of the other, one is driven to feel that snobbishness, like hypocrisy, is a check upon behaviour whose value from a social point of view has been underrated.
