I posted this in the networking thread, and here it is again, because thinking about it makes me that annoyed with a company I used to love.

We can do our best to make our lifeboats sustainable, but without an official space, a significant portion of the sense of inclusion and involvement is gone for forum interaction. We no longer have a viable chance of a developer looking closely at our comprehensive reactions and feedback, or responding to same. We, as a community, have effectively been muzzled. Not silenced, but filtered.

So, our options are limited and these splinter forums are going to show that. There will be cliques, schisms, and competition and even with all of that, no offsite group will receive as much reliable foot traffic as this one did.

But what can we do? Our only chance is encourage as much unity within the community as possible.

I've got over 30,000 posts to my name, and I've been as critical of Bioware as any, and more than most.

You'll be hard pressed to find any obscenities or name-calling in any of them   ;)

Which is a bit of a shame, because sometimes needs must.

You have to admit, some here earned it. I'd be a liar if I didn't include myself in there too.

(Though hopefully only occasionally).

Thanks. :)

Maybe you want to edit your post and remove the coloring. In Firefox, using the dark BSN theme, it's unreadable, unless I select the text with the mouse.

Edit: It seems that you've edited your post. Thanks.

This still sucks, but at least I have Facebook to post my complaints to.

I guess I'll just have to think up comments on how some fanart/merchandise/whatever Bioware posts is related to the forum being closed.

Very similar. And NPR is using the same rhetoric as BW to rationalize the decision.

It's a good read for anyone here, who still don't get it. :)

And the TechDirt author comes to same conclusion as we did:

Sadly, like Bloomberg, Recode, Reuters, Popular Science, and other sites, NPR and Montgomery round out the announcement by claiming that muzzling your community somehow illustrates a love of "deeper relationships" and "conversation"

...

That sounds so much lovelier than "nobody in our writing or editorial staff wants to take the time to cultivate local on-site community," "we're lazily cutting corners" or "we don't like having our mistakes highlighted publicly right below our articles," don't you think?

So the BSN is closing.

I signed up on the old Bioware forums, before the BSN existed. If I recall, my first post was to thank the devs for the unexpectedly great Jade Empire which surprised me for being pretty great when I had been sceptical of the game. I bought it solely on the strength of Bioware's name after loving everything else they had made. It was a wise move :)

I watched the development of DAO and ME. I participated in the DRM backlash beginning with ME1 PC that still infuriates me to this day. DRM aside, I continued to adore Bioware's work right up until DA2.

And yeah, well, since then it has been crystal clear that Bioware's devs are taking their games in a direction that I just don't care for. Don't get wrong, Bioware games are still good games. They're just not the kind of game that has me super excited as I once was. Quite honestly, ME has evolved from an action RPG into a third person shooter. DA2 was the most disappointing game I've ever played, and DAI (while better) was 90% filler IMO.

That's ok though. Bioware wants to go that route and, so, good luck to them. I'll still keep an eye on their games in case they change direction again. If they persist with Origin exclusivity then I'll continue to buy secondhand for console if the game looks interesting. If they launch sans DRM I'll buy new as I used to: but again, only if the game itself looks interesting.

Looking back I guess I feel that the official forums served a fairly under-appreciated role for the company: when fans were incensed about issues like DRM the control over the official forum meant that the CM was able to marginalize and reduce the visibility of those threads by moving them to less frequented sub-forums. The flimsiest of facades were all the justification needed at the time. The forums were a controllable safety valve that Bioware has used over the years to limit the PR damage of angry customers and fans. I think that the first real failure of that strategy was the ME3 ending debacle. But I think the fact that so much of the anger was offsite was the reason the strategy failed.

The timing of this closure coming just prior to the public outing of ME Andromeda tells my inner cynic that they're anticipating a real storm of negative buzz from long time fans when they make more of it public. I hope I'm wrong. Time will tell if that's the correct interpretation or not, and how well the strategy of closing the forums will work to limit the visibility of the fallout if so. I suspect, however, that losing control of their safety valve could end up being a fairly big mistake in the long run.

For me the end of the BSN is pretty much a chance to reflect and move on. I stopped visiting some months back. Quite honestly, I've just lost enough interest in Bioware's games to where I just can't be bothered with them anymore. Other games now exist that I care about much more. And no, the political/social themes are not a reason for my disinterest. I support Bioware on those fronts. But I do feel that the discussion around the games has become far too dominated by them.

I do want to shout-out to Allan Schumacher who has always impressed me on the forums for his willingness to discuss and communicate with fans even when it was clear his superiors were intent on employing 'the silence'. He's one of the good guys, period. And although he likely doesn't know me from Adam, another shout-out to Brockololly. I always admired his postings and agreed with him on most everything of his I read.

So farewell BSN. Bioware, I hope you have a better fate than other EA-subsidiaries. I also hope you return to your cRPG roots someday. I strongly suspect that for one hope to be realized, both need to be realized. I'm not overly optimistic but for all the great games in your history, I will always keep hoping for your success.

Good luck.

This.

And they call the players who criticized DA2's lazily-designed, repetitive dungeons and the ME3 endings toxic...

Good luck making good games without proper feedback from now on, EA/Bioware.

I know! I think that too. That's what all those images show. Think of the implications. Ghehe. :P

I'm going to miss those discussions. No "new spaces" can provide that.

Me too. And while we're on the topic, there's some weird stuff going on to get Shep there in the first place. For some reason, no one ever brought it up but me, but Shep somehow has to do a 180 mid-transport. I will showcase my eminent paint skills to demonstrate :P

Spoiler
So as you can see, the platform on the "lower" end of the Citadel where Shep stands has Earth above Shepard's head, but the beam would take them vertically so Earth is still below their feet. This is supported by the view we have during the confrontation with TIM showing the Citadel arms.

So until that stupid Elevator Ex Machina appears to take Shep to the kid, the directions make sense. Then everything turns on its head, in more ways than one  Hope that made sense

Well done. I've tried to do the same, although with fewer posts. Intelligent, eloquent, and civil criticism is my favourite kind to read, and generally the most persuasive :)

That's interesting. I'm assembling a research group as we speak! This will certainly not be the last word about this matter. I'm planning a mega-thread about it on the forum I've moved to.

If true then it warrants an EC of the EC. By closing the forums BW has lost another opportunity. Imagine when this goes viral!

No Doctors.

Not an Edmonton studio project, it's a Montreal one.

Mostly made by folks who worked on ME3MP/Omega. Mac Walters is still on board so yay I guess.

I hate to tell you, but it already is a game made by the BioWare we barely know.

Oh trust me, I've known this for a long time (and I have no plans to buy or even look into MEA). It is however still limping along wearing the BioWare skin but deteriorating more and more. Soon it won't even be that, it will be chopped up and used for parts.

Well, I'll never put it past EA or Bioware to do something stupid, but it would be colossally stupid not to have a forum for the ME:A release if they actually want people to:

1. Word-of-mouth it to others so they buy

2. Actually stay long enough to buy microtransactions in MP

3. Actually stay long enough to buy DLC

4. Not lower their reputation (???)

Because without a good place to find bug-fixes, mods, walkthroughs, and just plain general discussion a lot of people will leave a lot sooner than they would have otherwise.

If their future games are shallow and easy moble/facebook games that certain demographics are addicted to and will spend lots of money for microtransactions in but are not passionate enough to talk to anyone else about or ask questions pertaining to them then there will be no need for a forum. Angry Birds and Candy Crush don't have or need forums, so why would the new BioWare? (assuming there will even be a company by that name in the future)

Wa-wa-wait, Mac Walters is still there? Somehow I thought he wasn't for some reason. Well that's not good. Oh well, it's not like I could really get less excited for Andromeda.

He is but his influence is not direct

I finally took a look at these glass door reviews people have been talking about.

I suppose it's a good thing in some ways that this wake up call has been such a thoroughly disillusioning experience for me. First I witness David Gaider, who I previously looked up to so much, snicker together with Chris Priestly about us in that tacky way. Then things (of which I dare not speak more specifically) around here because progressively more totalitarian. Then I learn that within the industry, Bioware's reputation is apparently inextricably linked with nepotism and office politics.  I've never lost faith in anyone or anything so rapidly as I have in the past month.

The thing that makes me hesitant to draw too many conclusions about Glassdoor is that I don't read those sorts of things really ever, so I have no idea if those are the typical sort of ratings a company gets or not. I would imagine ratings on sites like that would skew negative because disgruntled employees or ex-employees have more motivation to vent about their employer.

This is a good point. I'm feeling jaded and resentful, so I don't want to come at this from an unreasonably biased perspective either.

I always take negative Yelp reviews with a grain of salt, because I'm in the customer service industry, and I know how likely dissatisfied people are to exaggerate or even fabricate the negative aspects of their experience. Complaints are just louder and more frequently voiced than praise.

Also worth noting that the mods here aren't BioWare employees, but outsourced.

But we don't really need Glassdoor reviews to observe their right and upstanding work, do we?

By the way, I just finished Act 1 of DA2.

Holy Christ, the game is broken. Armor pieces not showing up correctly on companions, at least one instance where I backstabbed into the map itself and briefly saw the bottom of the gameworld, and a bunch of quests (both in the main game and DLC) being bugged out.

Why I'm pushing myself to continue this is beyond me.

I'd call the second game an average fare due to its programming issues and clear-unfinished state. I also have issues with certain plots in the game.

I am still finding this pretty ridiculous.

The community cares more about the community than BioWare does.  They don't give two you know whats.  They've made that abundantly clear.

Shame on you BioWare.

Neither do I; seems like your system is bugged because mine runs so much smoother.
