I am still finding this pretty ridiculous.

The community cares more about the community than BioWare does.  They don't give two you know whats.  They've made that abundantly clear.

Shame on you BioWare.

Bioware has no feelings, remember? EA?

Neither do I; seems like your system is bugged because mine runs so much smoother.

LOL

I'm running this on a desktop with a GTX 980 I picked up about seven months ago. Runs like garbage during big battles.

And that's not even getting into the problems I've had with certain quests - I had to activate the console commands and fix it manually to get certain sidequests to run properly.

I know you're trying to play the role of the optimist, but you're doing a terrible job.

Admittedly, yeah. The Andromeda section didn't have much to talk about given Bioware hasn't given us much to talk about regarding the game.

Still proud of my Discover Andromeda:The Actual Galaxy thread though. That helped a lot of people and put smiles on a bunch of faces.

Wish the section had more interesting stuff like that going on than the constant "romance this" "what if this" "needs to recognize this" etc etc stuff

I finally took a look at these glass door reviews people have been talking about.

I suppose it's a good thing in some ways that this wake up call has been such a thoroughly disillusioning experience for me. First I witness David Gaider, who I previously looked up to so much, snicker together with Chris Priestly about us in that tacky way. Then things (of which I dare not speak more specifically) around here because progressively more totalitarian. Then I learn that within the industry, Bioware's reputation is apparently inextricably linked with nepotism and office politics.  I've never lost faith in anyone or anything so rapidly as I have in the past month.

It must be quite disheartening to go through that so quickly, Artifice :? I've had years to do it. So I'm sorry in that sense. And welcome to the disillusioned-fan club, ha :D

We helped. But entire Andromeda subforum with all its hair, romance, "what if...." threads is entirely, 100% on BioWare. What were they thinking? Creating subforum for a game in development with intent of NOT releasing any information for people to communicate about? Were they expecting us to sing praises for "It's gonna be amazing! #Andromeda" tweets?   < Edited for Inappropriate Content>

In the entire existence of this subforum, there were two contributions from BioWare:
-We're opening, have at it!
-We're closing, go elsewhere!

I don't think that's quite enough.

That's... a good point. I only ever visited the ME:A subforum once, so I never really thought about how odd it is - soon to be "was" - to have it up already, when we still know almost nothing about the game. Weird.

Sebastian's personal quests in Act 2 and 3 have bugs that were never fixed.  The Act 3 bug is downright game-breaking.

That's interesting. I'm assembling a research group as we speak! This will certainly not be the last word about this matter. I'm planning a mega-thread about it on the forum I've moved to.

If true then it warrants an EC of the EC. By closing the forums BW has lost another opportunity. Imagine when this goes viral!

:P

Sounds exciting... I suddenly have the urge to do some flycaming, it would be a pain though since I haven't done it for a long while

I have hundreds of hrs over at least six campaigns on an older system than I own currently; no such problems.

Cool. Let's do it. :P

Now we need to find a way to incorporate it into some kind of theory, other than "bad design". :)

Stuff like this made the BW forums fun.

Of course you would say you are serene but your feelings weren't the point. None the less, this claimed serenity is not what you are showing between the lines. The stress appears in the cracks of your need to attack me personally. On more than just this occasion. No doubt you and your clique will be able to justify this to yourselves. To put it simply: You. Are. Toxic.
And a good example of how that toxicity is validated and promoted by the 'likes' this post of yours garnered from others similarly toxic.

I believe that the distribution of likes can be explained much simpler: FKA_Servo is nice person, you are not. He's the kind of guy who pays for his friends' drinks, you are one who spills them when nobody's looking.

By the way, I just finished Act 1 of DA2.

Holy Christ, the game is broken. Armor pieces not showing up correctly on companions, at least one instance where I backstabbed into the map itself and briefly saw the bottom of the gameworld, and a bunch of quests (both in the main game and DLC) being bugged out.

Why I'm pushing myself to continue this is beyond me.

Maybe because it's a fun game with great companions.  ;)

@N7M, IMO you are wrong. Closing the forums is closing the strongest vocal chord fans have.

  • criticism is not inherently bad. If properly phrased and explained criticism can be constructive.
  • Constructive criticism cannot be properly provided in 140 characters or less.
  • if posts can be drowned in a sea of posts, lost over time, reorganized based on likes or dislikes, or otherwise hidden then I believe closing the forums may not completely silence fans but certainly constrains them to the point they are barely heard.
  • I do not like everything in the games I played. I never resorted to a simple "this sucks!" When I didn't like something I tried to explain why in a thoughtful, courteous manner. I believe if you are going to say you don't like something you should be respectful enough of the other's efforts to provide your reasons w/o insults. That's just how I at least try to roll. If I wasn't always successful, that's my bad but not my intent.
  • My posts, until the forums are gone, will always be found in the same place. That can't be said for many of the alternatives mentioned.
  • Twitter, etc. has its uses. Thoughtful discourse is not among them.

This is already several tweets too long. So I will leave it here.

Some might disagree that constructive criticism on a project of the scope of a BioWare game or all the more so on something as simple as a human being couldn't be encapsulated in 140 characters or less but I would tend to agree with you. Yet, while I may agree with the spirit of what you're saying for it would make for an ideal forum environment for BioWare to support. In actuality the forum seems to find a different expression. As those that take the time to express themselves in a constrained and focused manner are in the minority. Much of it is repetitive racket on whatever is the popular flavour of the day or entrenched and overstated viewpoint(re:ME3 ending, DAII sucks, so and so is a such and such, blah blah).

Even if a post is ideal it is still of niche interest. Most that play the games don't bother with forums. They simply play the game and move on as life's other demands take priority. Sure there will be quite a few that would like to have an answer to solve a particular problem using a quick google search but there is no need for an official forum to host the answer they're looking for.

What it seems you're saying and what some  others are really fearing and mourning here is a loss of a unique identity. At its most relevant, a qualification, as it were, for their critique as it is posted to an official forum and supposedly peer reviewed and supported. The abuses of this are too numerous to mention but even a casual objective observer can make some astute and pointed inferences. Further to this, you mentioned being drowned out in a sea of posts as a concern. This is something that happens here already it's not unique to other places.

If your critical thoughts on a BioWare game are valuable in themselves and modern methods don't seem to lend themselves to a proper venue there are still traditional methods.

It would be something to see the online "mobs" that have formed here around something like hair or a characters appearance form an actual picket line.

As a final note to this, I wanted to say thank you for taking the time to reply to me in the manner you did.

I have a theory.

But beyond that, I'm going to keep it to myself.

I have a "unifying theory", that would suggest that the person in question might be (or might have been) employed in a managerial position:

I've observed one thing, that virtually all managers have in common: when a fact suits me, I'll throw it in your face, when it doesn't suit me, it doesn't exist. And I'm the boss, so I'm right and you are wrong.

Do remember to check out http://bsn.boards.net/ if you're looking for a good place to visit. Alas they haven't imported any posts but it's a nice community over there.

However I do recommend also setting up an account on Fextralife as well for when you need to read the archive.

I feel sorry for our communities members of the other language sections. They never had Bioware communicate with them at all and now they have to find a new home, with all of the new communities being English only and all the places Bioware suggest that they talk to them.

I wish I could share my true feelings on that...

And before anyone considers that this post may be 'off topic'...

Conspiracy theory inbound:

You don't suppose the decision to close the forum has anything to do with how lucrative the Pachinko market is...?

Mass Effect Pachinko anyone?  ;)

Cut them people some slack. Not everyone is proficient with intergalactic mechanics. However love - that is something most know something about and so they talk about that instead. :wizard:

Anyone remember when Popular Science closed their comments sections? Several other news organizations and magazines followed their lead. They cited a study that found that the comments section was bad for science. The study showed that:

"But even a fractious minority wields enough power to skew a reader's perception of a story, recent research suggests. In one study led by University of Wisconsin-Madison professor Dominique Brossard, 1,183 Americans read a fake blog post on nanotechnology and revealed in survey questions how they felt about the subject (are they wary of the benefits or supportive?). Then, through a randomly assigned condition, they read either epithet- and insult-laden comments ("If you don't see the benefits of using nanotechnology in these kinds of products, you're an idiot" ) or civil comments. The results, as Brossard and coauthor Dietram A. Scheufele wrote in a New York Times op-ed:
Uncivil comments not only polarized readers, but they often changed a participant's interpretation of the news story itself."

Comment sections and forums are uniquely suited to breed toxic comments that might sway people to a negative mindset they might not have held otherwise. The fact that it's so easy to comment and that polarizing comments are so much more popular makes this a difficult problem to control and moderate. It appears that polarizing comments are given more weight than they are due and this gives disproportionate power of persuasion to those that hold extreme views. Closing off avenues of easy criticism might just become more common-place in the future.

Yeah, I'm quoting myself. Just learned that NPR is shutting down their comments section and lists reasons similar to Bioware's reasoning for shutting down their forums. This is the future people. :(

Well, this is going to be the end for me as well. I would have liked to see this through to the forum's end but I'm leaving on vacation today and won't be back till the site has gone read only.
I wish everybody all the best. Although I only started posting after DA2 came out and was already disappointed with Bioware on multiple fronts, I've had a lot of fun here and read a lot of interesting, entertaining or just silly threads. I made an account on fextra and had it synched, but I don't know if I will resume posting there. DAO was my first rpg and I will always adore it, just as will probably always adore the companions in DA2, but the overall drop in quality and sheer drive in creating something great is obvious and DAI did nothing for me on any front. So I think I'm more likely to move on to CDPR's boards, if any.
Still, Bioware games inspired me to start writing fan fiction, and although to some that might just mean they made me crazy (crazier) that is an experience I don't regret for a second. I learned a lot, especially about writing in English both here and for my stories.

So, this turned into a kind of rambly post with not much point, but I just want to say everybody goodbye. Happy gaming, everyone! Enjoy summer while it lasts.
And Bioware, you suck and I didn't like you anymore anyway.
