This makes me so sad. Bioware should try to attract the - you know - RPG audience. There aren't very many companies out there who make AAA RPGs, so it makes me very sad when they decide to appeal to the largest audience instead, because it dilutes what's left of the genre a bit. I guess that sounds melodramatic, but I'd hate to lose RPGs in favour of something that appeals to "the casual audience". I don't mind them having multiplayer (I actually love ME3MP), I just don't want them to compromise or dumb-down any aspects of singleplayer.
I guess all I can do is hope more people start liking RPGs
They cultivated a new generation of RPG crowd, and they seem pleased with the results. Folks who picked up RPGs in the 'cinematic' age are perfectly fine with all the mass appeal, if the success of Bethesda's recent titles are anything to go by. IIRC BioWare brought up Skyrim a lot while hyping DA:I. It spread itself too thin and had tons of pointless filler content, so they took some notes atleast.
I'm perfectly fine with no character generation, like in every jRPG ever and european RPGs like Gothic or Witcher series. I find it silly to write off a game just because you can't adjust some sliders to hear the same stuff coming out of the PC's mouth, only looking different.
I don't mind reading so voice acting isn't a must for me, increasing production values lead to trouble anyways. No to mention cutscenes are getting problematic with the increasing scope aswell. TW3 was fantastic in that regard, but ME3's auto dialoges and DA:I's fixed camera on approach solutions were half assed and hurt the game IMO.
Atleast Divinity OS2 comes out sometimes next year, and let's hope Kingdom Come: Deliverance can live up to its non-fantasy RPG ambitions. Obsidian's Tyranny looks promising aswell. I'll be fine without the mainstream AAA industy.
