Looks like Conal is losing his job.... as Community manager

A quick thought. They want twitter? How about starting a twitter flashmob then? I'm sure that most of the players and less frequent BSNers dont' even have a clue about what's going to happen. That's why they had preferred July-August,huh? Like when people are out for summer and vacations, less activity, less people to care. And when they get back - they find their read-only.

But even peple who don't post here should realize the scale of the upcoming change, and itis going to  involve anyone from NWN and up to DAI. I don't have that thing, but if some people around do - it's about time for something like #saveBWForums!

I just don't understand what the point of it is. I have NEVER come here to interact with the devs - that's a nice bonus, but it's not necessary. I'm here for the fans, for my friends, for discussions about the lore. This forum is a hundred times more accessible and conductive to long-running discussion than tumblr or reddit. Why are you trying to get rid of an excellent avenue for fans to talk to each other?

yep it's extremely sad that all that discussion is being cut off. Somehow think my days of having a place to discuss bioware games and give feedback are coming to an end unless something miraculous emerges from this arson. Twitter/tumblr/Reddit aren't a suitable alternative.

I just want to point out that this must have been a fairly recent decision because they just did the work of moving the entire forum to HTTPS. So they did the work and it was only in place for a month? =/

Despite not being an old-timer, I'm actually disappointed by this. This was a fun place to discuss Bioware-stuff and more importantly it was a place to discuss Bioware-stuff efficiently. It involves lots of vitriol too, but who cares, banter is fun.

Okay, now, obviously Bioware's way of justifying their decision is nil. Nothing. Zero. "we care for the community, so get lost".

Obviously you can't discuss on twitter or youtube or facebook or tumblr. And reddit is too much of an insta-ban echochamber -I won't even start on neogaf, EEEWW-. None of the above sites have the format to facilitate deep discussion, with clear structure and a useful archive.

So , that means, obviously Bioware doesn't want their games to be discussed and analysed anymore. They just want buzz. Mostly positive noise around whatever new trailer or artwork they release.

This really feels like an executive/marketing decision, doesn't it? Something like "well, we want social media to promote our new products and generate hype, forums dwell too much on previous games and bring up too many criticisms, this doesn't really suit our business model".

Let that sink in. Bioware doesn't want their fans to have deep discussions about their games. And they want their fans to be elsewhere. They don't want to even be associated with them.

One can't help but feel they were really not looking forward to fan reactions about their upcoming games, so they silenced us in advance.

Yup, that's certainly what it looks like reading between the lines

Not everything was always rosey and there were always bumps in the road when fans/customers would question BioWare decisions, but overall we had a great time. Sadly, DA2 and the endings of ME3 weren't enjoyed by everyone (I'm not bring this up more, you know what I'm talking about if you were here) and things turned much more negative than they had been in the past. Still BioWare and its fans worked to keep these forums going. It wasn't easy. There were people in the studio, some quite powerful, who wanted the forums closed. Yet, there were also those, like me, who wanted the boards to stay open and after much discussion, they remained.

Those people wouldn't happen to still be around and.. you know, in charge of decision making, would they? Possibly thought to themselves, "So the next mass effect is scheduled to come out. Oh, hey, I think I remember something about those forums causing us a **** ton of bad publicity regarding the last Mass Effect game. I think we should make sure that doesn't happen again. We're between games right now. The lead up to MEA hasn't started in earnest. Now's the perfect time to tie up that loose end!" And this time no one could convince them otherwise b/c the bad optics that would have been amplified due to the media attention surrounding ME3 at the time are not currently a problem?

I'd make a joke about revenge being best served cold, but its likely not even that. Revenge is personal. This could very well have been the forums just having been dispassionately on the chopping block for years and now is just the right moment to finally tick that box off somebody's "to do" list. (And leave Conal holding the bag, of course, if he wants to keep his job.)

Oh my god, I hadn't even thought about that. No experiencing the DA4 hype with my friends, no creating fan threads... I'm legit crying and I'm not even sorry about it.

This is awful.

It is :( .

I did not think I would ever tear up thinking of the Fishquisition (except possibly from laughter) or the time I filked One Day More at two in the morning the night before E3, but here we are. Those are kind of ridiculous thing that ONLY happens when you have dozens of people who love a particular game locked in a virtual room together - and there won't be anywhere like that for the development of DA4.

The benefit of a forum is it's accessible to less socially engaged segments of your market. We don't all have big online social networks.

BSN (and its predecessor, the BioBoards) have been my primary (and often only) social network since 2001.

I have no idea where I'm going to get news or argue design with people now.

Also, someone needs to archive all the DAO mods from the project section of old BSN.

It only took the end of the site for me to agree with Sylvius on something.

Twitter as an alternative to a forum is a joke.  RPGs, especially ones trying to be speculative, tend to create big posts.  I've made some posts on ME3 that looked like they could pass for a doctoral thesis.  And twitter's character limit often left me trimming down a single sentence for being too long.

Ripping the band-aid off and trying to heal. The salt added is from tears.

I hope not, they're probably only doing what they're told to. I really wouldn't want to be living their day right now having to face our sadness and not being able to say anything. This is the worst job (or one of them). The social anxiety is strong already from watching from my distance so I hope they're still getting their money for it

Edit : alright maybe you meant "no more forum = no more job", and... that's also real sad

Twitter is a joke*. Between the 140 character limit making nuanced discussion outright impossible and the Twitter CMs straight-up suspending and banning people they don't like and selectively enforcing their rules only on certain people, I'm legitimately surprised companies still think it's some kind of viable outlet to talk about news.

And I say all this as someone who uses Twitter as their primary sh*tposting platform.

I don't think Bioware ever really understood the community that was build. How lives were changed and altered because of this forum. I hate to see it disappear.

I don't think Nexus allows you to upload others' mods.  You have to be the original author to do it.  And the authors of many of the mods haven't been seen in years.

Considering the level of discourse these forums manage to sink to on a regular basis...I actually won't miss the BSN forums terribly much. After seeing a few childish rants by some posters in response to this announcement, I'm actually almost glad that I won't have to read moronic crap from people like them anymore.

That being said, I agree with just about everyone who thinks it's a dumb idea to close the forums. There are the occasional threads with merit to them that do provide good feedback, plus the community interaction. I'm sorry, but I don't consider either Tumblr (almost never use it) or Twitter (occasionally use it) particularly good ways to get serious feedback from people on the games themselves.

Better moderating and zero-tolerance on bad behavior might have helped matters here - just saying.
