This is a laughably bad decision. Like a really, really bad decision. It is textbook example of how to destroy a community and alienate an existing, as well as future, fanbase.

The corporate bollocks being spouted as a rreason is par for the course - doesn't make it true though. It's just a bad attempt at justification of a decision by someone who has no idea how these things work.

I haven't seen any issues with Bioware folks posting here when they don't act like jerks, Priestly and Gaider totally deserved the abuse they got because of the way they acted. I don't know if Allan's received any abuse here but the fact that he's still posting here instead of being chased off like them says something. Also that thread after DA2 where there was back and forth discussion with Mark Darrah/Mike Laidlaw was great and I don't remember anyone being abusive to them.

We can totally have long, structured discussions on lore and things like politics in the setting(s) in the comment sections to PewDiePie's videos. I have seen the light, these forums truly serve no purpose when such a superior option is available.

That isn't BioWare's problem anymore. I think they're relieved.

From what I hear it was Mass Effect 3's ending that was the start of this downward spiral

This might sound extreme, but in the example you're describing, I'm still in favour of forums. Yes, that hypothetical person is an @$$hole, but so what? People already mentioned in this thread , being "toxic" is human behavior and in a forum it just takes the form of mean words which isn't something noteworthy. You mentioned how stressful moderating this place was, maybe that was because you considered people being nice and polite and so on as a goal to be achieved. It's not. It shouldn't be. Discussion doesn't have to be tea party and daisies. Banter is fine. At the end of the day, a string of characters in a discussion about electronic interactive toys about make belief in sci-fi/fantasy lands isn't something that should upset you.

Forums might be "violent", but the alternative is too sterilised. Discourse can't happen in a thought hospital.

Well, the forums are soon to die though, so I guess it's a thought graveyard now.

I may be showing my age, but as I child I was taught "sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me"

Saying terribad things to people is not okay, and need to be moderated/banned/what have you.  But in the end, it's just words.  And words are wind.

We don't need an echo chamber here, we don't all need to pretend to like each other.  We just need basic civility.

This is another reason why Twitter is garbage as a platform of discussion. Unless you're verified and have a million followers, nobody gives a f*** what you say. I have 122 followers as of right now, and any time I say something against a prominent public figure like a journalist or whoever, I'm told "lol who cares what a nobody with no followers thinks?"

Facebook is the same in that if you don't have a profile pic or an open profile that trolls can creeper-farm for info-weaponry, you're summarily dismissed. These are not platforms that facilitate discussion or encourage engagement. =\

Apparently asking them where they plan to listen to the fan feedback they keep saying they care about so much is a prime example of why the forum needs to be shut down.

Yeah, that pretty much summarizes most of the few employee responses that I've seen.

Speaking of Priestly, here's a little exchange from EAware's Facebook page:

(Poster A) "I guess BioWare doesn't value community or the feedback that community provides...
That or Andromeda is really going to s*ck and they just don't want to deal with the criticism (I say this as a long time fan of the Mass Effect games - including ME3 - who was / kind of still is looking forward to Andromeda)."

(Poster B ) "Or maybe they are tired of being torn about by people who clam to be their fans. Constructive criticism is one thing but right now you have people who act more like online bully's then fans who want to give legit feedback."

(Poster A) "Sure there are some bullies - every forum has those - but most of the people I've conversed with on the BioWare forums have provided some great insights. Or, at the very least, provided some great discussions."

(BioWare) "We value and seek out the feedback our players give us. Despite the closure, we will always be listening."

(Poster A) "Since you're closing your own forums, where exactly will you be doing this listening?"

(Chris Priestly) "[Poster A] being a prime negative example of why the forums need to be closed. Instead of looking for new opportunities, dwell on negatives and criticize without factual basis."

Apparently asking them where they plan to listen to the fan feedback they keep saying they care about so much is a prime example of why the forum needs to be shut down.

That is so ironic, it's delicious.

I still don't understand why they can't rename the forums and wash their hands of them. Leave it standing, have community mods instead of Bioware employees so the devs don't have to hear toxic BS 24/7 but the fans can still converse.

I come to these forums to discuss things with other fans, not to hassle the developers. I mean, it's great if they DO want to listen to feedback, but that's not why I and many others are here. I just want to talk about something I love with like-minded people. I have no one irl to talk to about dwarves and dragons and crap.

This is all I have, and it'll be gone. :(

Look at the thread in the ME3 section about the things people have discovered. That is a great thread for folks to see what people have found and then go find it themselves during a playthrough.

There's even one thread for what did you do in ME and one for what did you do in DA. Both good threads for people to post their playthrough and even ask questions about the game. This forum is, well soon to be was, a great place to get answers and information. Oh well.

I'm still proud of that thread. I'm gonna miss you jokers.

This is crazy though. Where the heck am I supposed to have fun discussing this stuff now? Reddit? RPG Codex? Hosanna take me away, cuz those places suck.

Today was the first day I posted in roughly 17 months or so, so don't read too much into my being here on the forum.  I came back because I had heard the news and after reading through this thread decided to log back in again.

Shepard's Paint Adventures, who is saving that?

Well, I've saved all 140 pages of the thread, for what it's worth. I've been considering the option of immortalizing them in an imgur album as the "lazy solution" when I've more time to spare. Maybe they'll be up on whatever-forum us BSN-ers deem as this forum's successor.

Let's have a final moment of silence for Mass Effect Paint Adventures.

As for what's in the future of these BioWare Paint Adventures... I don't know. I've always wanted to do a Dragon Age series and had a couple of templates prepared for that (the different races of Thedas). Right now, I'm busy with the on-going sequel to Old Republic Paint Adventures. I'll probably have to finish that one first before starting something new.

It's been a good run, folks! I'll meet you over at the new place when the time comes!

They don't want to spend the money to keep the lights on here.

I doubt that's the reason. I mean, really? how much does this cost to them? it's just a mother effing forum and they're BioWare, bought by EA for christ sake. I refuse to believe they can't bother to spend money on having a website live.

One thing I might have missed: What about the old BSN forums? When will they get purged? I think I got a lot of faves on that forum.

I hear ya here. More than once I've been in a discussion on Facebook about some topic or other and my entire argument will be dismissed because my profile picture is a Space Marine from Warhammer 40k, and "nobody should take nerds seriously." /s

One thing I just thought of, good luck trying to use Twitter to talk to devs when at least a couple of them are using blockbots. I would know, I've been blocked by some of them just for hashtagging #GamerGate, not even mentioning or referring to the devs in any way.

The forums were definitely not about talking to the devs. That was never their primary function, and everyone knows it. But you know what, I will enjoy whatever spin I see creeping up on media sites about the 'toxic' fans again. Good fun.

Allan I believe. Conal has barely even stepped foot in this forum except to tell us the next thing he's axing. The idea that spending time here drained him personally is laughable.

Believe BroJo too. He was extremely active around here during the days of ME3MP and was always willing to discuss stuff.

Well ****. I joined back in NWN1, and have for the most part really enjoyed the conversations and sense of community I've had on these boards in its, what, maybe three versions for me. It is the only place on the internet to connect with people who have shared in the experience of playing through a Bioware game. I've been trying to find something similar for years (facebook, reddit, etc...), and have not found anything that comes close. That's why I keep returning.

Guess that's done.

Au revoir, adios, and goodbye.

Yeah, I recall the old pre-BSN forums which were great for interacting with the developers on a regular basis and it was always nice to interact with them here but BSN was also a nice place to interact with other fans. So in that respect I'll be sad to see it go more than anything. The way the announcement is framed makes it sound like the developers grew tired of the forums or that they had such a lofty opinion of themselves that simply because they couldn't interact with people here as much as possible that meant the whole thing should just be burned to the ground.

Agree, there is no way it will be because of cost. I suspect it is the criticism and the prevailing negative vibe. Public perception is important and this place can at times be, not overwhelmingly, but significantly negative. It has an effect on other fans who catch on to the vibe as well members of the staff who become dispirited.

Personally I think it is a very bad decision and the MPer aspect of their games will suffer the most. Places like the ME3 MPer forums were so important for the game and the community. There are other forums but no where else has the same concentration of fans and nowhere else will ever be quite the same.

But..but..the rise in "geek culture"!

Things like video games may have become more popular, but being a gamer or any kind of geek/nerd/whatever is still a bad thing, according to society. Seriously, if you have any non-geek friends and you play tabletop games, don't tell them or they'll probably stop interacting with you. You have people like Devin Faraci wanting to return to the days when nerds were bullied in school (little does he know, they still are) and Robyn Vinter who thinks someone striking up small talk about Pokemon Go is sexual harassment. Personally, I blame The Big Bang Theory more than anything, people aren't wrong when they say that show is blackface for geeks.
