A few days after the forums shut down, I'm sure BW will send out a newsletter talking about how they recently made one of the most talked about changes to their forums ever.

Remembering how I made fun of Jonathan Cooper (former ME animator) when he tweeted that it was fair to say production was not going well after watching the EA Play conference. Sorry dude, my denial was just too deep
.
Pessimism does have an advantage, in that you will never be truly disappointed.

That's him. I schooled him on his own character once, and he just made a snide remark and crept away.
Someone in this thread quoted him in response to the mod here giving excuses about devs not coming around. The quote read that the forums are used mainly for the fans to communicate with each other, rather than the devs. And now today here's Gaider shooting his thumbs off about how the forum is failing because people expect the devs to post replies to them. Then he admits he has no idea because he doesn't work at BioWare anymore.
Egh...
I saw that. A few minutes ago, someone kindly asked him whether he knew if Bioware had any plans after shutting down the forum. Maybe opening a new forum, like many of us have speculated?
His reply was impolite, to say the least. He dismissed the lady as if she had been wrong to ask him. He stated he had no idea because he no longer worked at BW. Just like that. But he said it in a tone that gave off the impression she was supposed to know better than to bother him with such questions.

To be fair DG has always been a bit... snarky. And he didn't really hide his distaste when it came to these forums, you'd expect empathy when it came to a writer but... ~shrug~

It looks like Chris P is the only BioWare-related poster who is not lying to our faces and talking in circles.
If they wanted to punish us and close down the forums because people criticized DA2 and ME3s ending, I really fear for ME-A.
I wont name, names.
But we can guess who the "quite powerful."
People were who wanted them shut down during that era.

I noted that snark from the developers didn't help things on this forum. The snark was overdone and never ended, it was offensive quite often.

Just out of curiosity does anyone know of other AAA devs that simply don't have any official forums of any kind?
Wizards of the Coast deleted theirs a few months ago, citing similar reasons. I know they're not exactly what you're looking for, since they make tabletop RPGs, CCGs, and boardgames - not videogames. But they're the biggest name in tabletop RPGs (Dungeons and Dragons) and in CCGs (Magic the Gathering). Countless great build guides got swallowed into the void when their forums disappeared.

Its the erasing the archives more than anything else that makes me certain it IS a financial decision and they're lying. If the cost isnt the problem and they just want to communicate in ways other than the forums, theres absolutely no reason to purge the archives.
I'm from the Tumblr part of the fandom and never had much to do with this community. Still, it's been an important and unmatched resource for information about mods, bug fixes and lore and I know from some of the reaction I've been seeing on Tumblr, that it's been that for a lot of non-forum fans. Breaking up the community here by shutting down the forums is one thing, destroying it so utterly that there's not even a read-only archive for everyone to access is another.
My guess is that erasing the archives is essentially a punitive measure. The kids couldn't take care of their toys, so Bioware isn't just going to take the toys away, they're going to break them. Which is absolutely horrible considering the lack of proper support and moderation you guys seem to have had to deal with with. The fans aren't the ones that failed this forum.
My heart goes out to you guys. This has implications for the Bioware fandom at large, but you guys are the ones at ground zero and having your community taken away.

I've been on the VSN for a while now. Its not the place to keep talking about Bioware products, but a lot of past forum members use it to keep connected after Bioware made them feel unwelcome.
More should join. http://vroomvroom.freeforums.net

Do I understand that you're actually going to delete these forums so that all the content (tutorials, lists, information, etc.) just disappears into nothingness? I hope I misunderstood. If this IS your plan, I urge you to reconsider. There is unique content here which can be found nowhere else. It should be possible to put the board into a state that does not allow posting or interaction, but allows the content to still be searched and read. Please don't destroy years of useful content just because people have discussions elsewhere.

I don't know if it was Bioware or EA's decision to nuke the forums, but now the only thing i think is how stupid the phrase "We care about our fans" sounds.
They say it all the time.
I had to have a conversation with our team leads last semester in our game dev club about the repeated use of "we want you guys to feel heard" catchphrase that was used when ignoring the (legitimate) complaints about the way our leads were running teams while still trying to stay the "friendly leads that listen". I should note that I'm at least 5 years older than most of the people in this club because I started college late and have YEARS of retail work and some management under my belt. The teams were getting extremely upset about feeling ignored while being told they were being "heard" constantly, and it was affecting our ability to work together, and I finally had to break it down for our lead because she honestly just didn't have the managerial experience to understand why Saying is never better than Just Doing (i.e. actually listening and actively responding to your team). She was a little upset about it at first and gave me the cold shoulder for a while, but she started to take my discussion to heart and stopped using the "we want you to be heard" catchphrase and actually actively started to listen, and the difference in team performance & communication was noticeable.
What I'm saying is, if a college student can learn this lesson pretty fast then a well-funded company PR person should already know it, and it's a bad sign when they don't :/

Reading some of the happy responses from people glad to see this place go in other locations is heartbreaking.
I didn't even do any of the stuff they're talking about but because I've always been here I'm not welcome at these other places.
The hell man. Its like Bioware's sticking up for them and not for us. What gives?

I'm more upset about seeing devs like Gaider basically kick us while we're down than other fan communities. They have their community, they're loyal to it, they might not like this one, no skin off my nose if they don't. But I agree, it feels like the people who should at least be somewhat sympathetic to our feelings are instead happy to see us go. That's just not cool.

People just keep bringing up how "toxic" this environment is to the point that its become meaningless. I've yet to see the level of fan engagement present here on any other platform.

I am going to gag every time Bioware delivers "we listen to our fans" from now on swear on me mum.
Tell me about it.
It isn't surprising at all, that official Bioware statements about this mess could've came straight from the Ministry of Truth ("the reason why we are closing this large venue for fan discussion is because we appreciate and respect our fans and their opinions so much"). It's after all the universal default position for larger companies to handle PR situations like this. Regardless, I still cannot help but to be more than slightly nauseated by all this corporate BS. Don't know why, I guess it ruins my otherwise solemn mood.
Well, at least this "we care about our fans"-drivel reminds me of this great scene from a great movie. It's about as sincere.

The "toxic" line of reasoning is so pat, it's a community so yes, some parts are toxic. If you choose to stare yourself blind at the toxic bit that's on you because that is factually not all that's there.
