This just give them a negative image if anything.

And this decision I'm certain was also made by someone on the top of BW, surely the Kings of Salt. Talk about "toxic".

A lot of die hard fans are and will loose the little faith they still have left for this company. By closing the forums they just said "we don't give a shiet" because this is a community that took time to be built, with a flip ton of data from its users and by saying "it has no purpose anymore" is pretty much "it has no purpose to us, so f*ck off".

They're wiping out our community fragmenting it into a million pieces. People will end up on A, B, C, D, E. And a lot of them will end up nowhere.

Community is an important part (if not the most important part) for a videogame company, let me remind you that. But not for BioWare anymore apparently, they don't need that, they only need our money. How silly of us.

Yes they'll still have their little army of yes-men on twitter/FB that live only to see perfection in everything they do, but they're a lie. People who can't criticize are not true fans, are just casuals.

And that's what they want, and that's what their games aim for apparently: casuals.

First Valve (when they stopped making games), now Bioware... sigh. Please CDPR, for the love of everything, never change.

This is my third bioware forum closure.  The last one it seems.

I remember the switch to social Bioware pre DA release (I was one of the first 1000 I think) and social bioware turning to forum.bioware.

I do not like things on Facebook (it’s more of an address book for me than anything else), don’t have a twitter or tumblr.  I do not use reddit either (it does not support long discussion threads in a proper manner).

So this is it for me I guess.

I have not posted much since Inquisition came out, and I do not think a lot of folks remember me, but this place (in its various incarnations over the years) was my go to place for Bioware games related info  for 8 years of my life)

Goodbye guys, I guess I am transitioning from being a fan into the occasionally buys games  a couple of months after release category.

I think there is a very real burnout/distressing effect from toxicity from forums when you're a creator. Even as a person extremely critical of Bioware (especially later titles) and who considers that shutting down these forums is a sign of Bioware being Borged by EA and transformed into a soulless factory up until they don't bring enough money and are mothballed, I still find a large number of answers toward the dev to be unacceptable, childish and needlessly antagonistic.

I think Gaider, being rather snarky and direct, has endured a lot of, to be frank, downright abuse, and might have ended up feeling the forums were just a channel for toxic behaviour, and deserving to be closed.

I disagree with his conclusion (I find the idea of a game company not having forum ludicrous, it's basically cutting yourself from direct feedback, hence why I consider the closure a real sign of a deep change in management and a probable foretelling of death), but I certainly can understand from where he's from - to sum up : plenty of people posting on the forums are agressive and entitled dicks holding dev to ridiculously perfect standards of behaviour and then wondering why said dev lose desire to interact with them.

I have no doubt that you're in many ways right. Gaider has endured a lot, and there's plenty of bad online behaviour. AAA game company not having a forum is definitely ridiculous.

Still, the points that come to mind from this are:

1) Gaider hasn't just lost the desire to communicate; he's gloating.

2) Him receiving "unacceptable, childish and needlessly antagonistic" responses in Twitter proves that Twitter is not a solution for the toxicity problem, even though it's provided as one. The same thing would just happen all over again.

3) Bad online behaviour is solved by good moderation. This, in turn, takes money. Which is one of the reasons why I still think this is primarily about money, and money only.

Like you're saying, this might well herald the end of BioWare :/

Man, I'm still sad. I mean, what is this?

We aren't suggesting you use Twitter, or Facebook, or any other platform that you don't want to. Each has its advantages and disadvantages, and we encourage our players and studio members to use the sites that suit their preferences.

There are many places where you can still have in-depth discussions about lore, such as the wikis, fan run community boards. And yes, there is even Reddit, which while these discussions may sometimes get buried on the main subreddit, there is nothing precluding the creation of a lore or character-specific subreddit.

The discussions you are referring to are already happening in many other spaces and in many other forms. Some ephemeral and quick, others in-depth and at length.

Uh, where are the discussions that are in-depth and at length? They're sure not on Twitter or Facebook. You can't find them on Tumblr or Reddit because those sites are not built for it. Everything gets buried there. Do you have any idea how empty a lore-specific or character-specific subreddit would be, nevermind the fact that it's faceless and impersonal and they explicitly don't want us there?

Fan-run community boards are nice in theory, but they're going to be hugely fractured and not at all impartial or even-handed. The ones that are already established - again - want nothing to do with us.

This is all we have and you're destroying it for no reason.

Not unexpected. Sad to see it happen for fan-fan interaction.

The reasoning is unsound. Should have hired David to write it. At least he could have added a dash of snark which is always welcome in doom and gloom times.

Might want to give a heads up to the "user-to-user" tech support area to tell EA and other folks to stop sending people back to these forums for "help".
Just a suggestion.

I had a lot more to say but really need a full cup of coffee before I write an e-book. So you have all been spared due to lack of coffee. Congrats!

Take care everyone!

Cheers,

FD

Isn't it depressing when the community that starts most posts with "I'm not racist but" is the best option left?

I wouldn't know. Honestly, I don't even know which you're referring to, or if you're referring to both of them. Heck, you could mean Reddit or something else. I don't use either of them for a whole mess of reasons, and stupid people expressing their misguided or thoughtless opinions is one of them.

I don't think Bioware is aware that the places they expect us to go aren't welcoming to us because of Bioware's claim that we were all toxic so closing the forum is effectively cutting us off from having our ideas taken seriously and being able to communicate with other people properly.

There's a reason we're here after all.

It's sad. Really.

This place is (soon was) the reason I kept waiting for DA4 and Secret IP. Now, while I'll still follow ME franchise (even this depends on MEA), I'm not sure about those other titles. What I loved the most about DA wasn't game itself, but conversations I could have here. With this gone... I don't know if I care anymore.

I do not think that they are  unwelcoming  per se, they are however very different from  the classic forum format.   The format is dying, which leaves folks how do not want to mix their professional lives (social media accounts) with their hobbies hanging.

Well guys it seems that time arrived. I will join fan-made forums to keep discussing BW games then but NOT Reddit I just loath that place UI. BSN was a crazy place but nonetheless was very fun. Enjoyed the rants, the IT threads and the crazy theories that users were generating here. I'm quite sad tbh because coming to this forum was a nice habit I got in the last years.

Pity it ended like that I guess it was a financial decision because frankly it is the only conclusion that make sense. I don't use Facebook for gaming news (and never will). I don't use twitter at all and I don't even know what tumblr is nor I care.

Farewell guys It was great while it lasted.

also since I will never get the chance again

Huh? Forum format works rather well with every other video game franchise, hell movies and other fictions.

It's a hardly dying format, just had shrink a bit due to rise of social media that are competitive to forum format.

Bioware, exclusively Bioware Edmonton, is the only still existing and active company that is about to shut down it's forums for sake of third party sites. Nobody else had done that since and fact that Bioware Austin is keeping their forums just speak volumes that Bioware Edmonton is alone in this.

So no, forum format is not dying at all.

I think this is what gets me the most (aside from, you know, not being able to have a long-running discussion anywhere else). I don't want to post three thousand status updates on FB about dwarf meta. Why? Because my cousins and coworkers and former classmates don't give a ****.

Preemptive damage control for when the next ME game is coming out. Calling it now. They know the game is crap and they want to make sure complaints aren't seen.

LPPrince is referring to the /r/dragonage posts that explicitly say they're afraid of being overrun by angry and upset BSN people, bringing their toxicity into their safe haven. That is not welcoming; they're trying to protect their community from interlopers. That's their right, and I sort of get it, but at the same time it does show how there really isn't anywhere for us BSN folks to go. Sure, some people are working on alternatives, but if the community ends up fractured, I don't really see the point. Unless it becomes known that a great percentage of the BSN people have migrated over to a specific platform, I can't see myself caring about another place very much.

Also, the fact that these were the official forums meant something.

No, they're actually unwelcoming. Literally preparing to ban people who show up.

Frankly the fact that Bioware's closing its official forums is a joke. Their posts on other sites should lead people HERE, not the other way around.

Huh, can you actually ban random people on Facebook or twitter ?   I would guess some sub-reddits might be unwelcoming, but its not like they can check your social bioware registration date or something.

I think its more along the lines of the subreddit mods being extra vigilant in the coming weeks. Aside from that, I don't know how Reddit works at all, so I can't speak to how new fans would just start posting.

Yep. It's funny because "childish and needlessly antagonistic" is a great description of Gaider's own posts. He was always stirring the pot, especially on mage/templar fights, and he's one of the most condescending posters I've ever seen in 23 years online. He talks down to everyone, as others have noted in this thread.

There's two people I really blame for BSN's fall. Chris Priestly and David Gaider.

I wouldn't know. Honestly, I don't even know which you're referring to, or if you're referring to both of them.

Youtube. With no moderation the place is... yeah...

Over what? I've seen quite a few posters angry about this person's banning but no one has said what happened. Or they did and the posts got removed (more likely scenario).

Far as Facebook and Twitter go, Facebook's far more negative than this place ever was but I'm not sure how the blocking would go. At least here you'd get a warning point. There you'd get banned from even using the Bioware page. And then Twitter of course has the block feature, which again doesn't offer a warning point system or anything of the sort.

So its pretty dumb. And thats not counting the fact that Reddit's already preparing to ban people who come in from here.

This is just so unbelievably stupid.

Forget Youtube. Its a troll's playground. Funny how all these places talked about the forum being toxic because Bioware told them we were toxic when in fact they were and still are so much worse.
