About the forum closures . . . .
Disappointed? Yes. Upset? Yes. Do I understand? Not so much.
I come to the forums almost daily. 'Post your inquisitor here' is one of the topics I follow regularly. I don't like using twitter, except when I've had a simple technical problem (usually DAKeep related). I enjoy reading theories about the game, nuanced discussions on the lore or characters, etc,
I can't count the number of times since DAO I've come here to find answers to either technical questions or gameplay questions. Maybe it's about relationships between my Warden/Hawke/Inquisitor and companions, why I'm not getting the result I thought I would, etc. I could always find the answers in the forum. These answers were, 99% of the time, from other fans. When I read through a topic and came across a reply from Allan, Bryan, or another Bioware employee I considered that a bonus or courtesy rather than an expectation. Well, except in the Feedback forums where I did expect some official posts either as replies or new topics. Whenever I posted my opinions on one of the Dragon Age games (have not played Mass Effect yet) I always tried to constructively/diplomatically explain why I did or did not like a certain aspect. For the most part, I didn't run across a great deal of the more toxic posts, and I always felt comfortable posting my opinions. Of course, that could just be selective memory at work,
.
I am a big fan of Dragon Age, and value the in-depth discussions between fans. The forums make it easy to follow a discussion and easy to reply and get involved. I also check your news forums for information. I found out about the Keep, the books, and the comics from your forums, not twitter. I have all the books and the grapic novels except Magekiller. I'm waiting for that to come out in a 'library'.
You, Bioware, say you pay more attention to/interact more on other sites. I know about the DA twitter thread and your Facebook page, neither of which can offer the same discussion capabilities. Which sites do you interact with that have a similar capability and ease of use as your own forums?
Even if you think the best decision is to lock down the forums - why do you wish to abolish them entirely? The gold mine of information on your older games seems like it should be a benefit to new customers to those games. Then there are other, technical questions I have that should be addressed:
- When I create a Warden, my Warden is uploaded to the legacy forum. Same with Hawke. Now, the DA Keep imports their base information into the Heroes section so they are available for a new world state. Umm, what will happen with that process?
- Or will you add the opportunity to add heroes without syncing?
- Have you gone through your technical support and, where an answer refers to a forum post, copied that information to make sure it is available in the future?
- Where will the DA Keep forums go? Will you move the tutorials and other valuable information to the Keep website?
- Will you even maintain the Keep? Which I thought was a brilliant solution to the importing your world-state issue.
I really can't count live events such as PAX as significantly interacting with your fans. I just can't imagine that the number of fans able to go to these events is anywhere near as high as the number of fans on these forums. If you count videotaping your events and posting them, then maybe I'm wrong. Call me old-fashioned but to me interacting means live, with the opportunity for back and forth questions/discussions.
I prefer you reconsider your decision, but if you are determined on this course then please address these concerns first. Thank you.
