VSN was originally created to house the exiles who frequented the Off topic section here when it was closed a year ago. A number of users split off from VSN to form TSG following some disagreements over users having been banned. I don't frequent TSG but both places seem to be better off now for it, and many posters use both.

 

And FYI, the name of the VSN isn't just some giant Vroom ego trip. It was supposed to just be temporary until we came up with something else but it kinda stuck and most people there wanted the name to stay.

I'm still fond of 'The Garage' as the name, but alas it wasn't meant to be.

VSN was created as basically a temporary ark for offtopic regulars though it's become more permanent. TSG was created because VSN's moderation was considered too strict by some after members were banned for rule breakages. It's a tad more complicated than that but you wanted the short version.

 

Long story short

VSN tighter moderation

TSG less moderation

This is generally a good summary, though I would add two things:

1. TSG wasn't created to be a rival of VSN. It was mainly created by Johnnie Walker to be the basis for her Youtube channel. The moderators on both forums have been stressing for awhile now that membership on one does not disqualify you from membership on the other. You can always make an account on both and cross-post between the two.

2. The issues that created the divide on VSN were about the moderation policy in general, not just the specific banning of certain posters. That was just one part of it.

But yeah, I would say you should look into both and see which one suits you, or if you want to be a regular on both.
