Hey guys,

 

I'm back with a small update, after a couple of quick comparisons I decided to go ahead and use XenForo instead of Vanilla Forums.. I already have a license from work which I used for local development with permission.

 

So far I've done most of the basic work and this is the local version as it runs right now

 

 

The background is just temporary of course and I promise the final iteration will be blurry and not as sharp, and I'm experimenting with different options, so far most of the forum nodes have been added and I can promise there'll be sections for other languages as well.

 

I expect it'll be a few days before a final design has been settled, in the meantime I'd really appreciate your feedback guys.

Sadly that is all I can say, as I have no experience or knowledge about this things. But it have a nice feeling and I like when it is a dark background as I usually don't have much light on and don't like to be blinded.

Does anyone want to try and collaborate efforts? Seems a lot of various folks are all making forums at the same time, which is confusing and scattering. At the moment, I've been backing what I'll call "The Fans' BSN" because it's run by Cyonan, a prodigious, level-headed, and well-known dataminer from the ME3MP forum. He's trying to rebuild it in the way things were here and we've gotten most of the Twitter Thread updaters over there continuing their work. I'm the Global Moderator/Community Manager over there.

 

We could definitely use design and theme assistance, as well as any thoughts on archival of the old BSN. Or we could perhaps link to you or whoever manages to successfully archive BSN. I've got my two MP Resource Libraries saved and archived over there, but that's not even a small pebble in the bucket of knowledge here.

Two competing BSN boards is nuts. I like what bsn.board.net are doing and think the format and style is better atm imo but it was mean spirited to have full knowledge of Cassandra's boards and go ahead and ape her idea rather than make any attempt to join forces and co-ordinate with the admin/mods at biowaresocialnetwork.boards.net. Cyonan's stated reasoning for starting another bsn boards was born out of distrust of Cass, Cyonon and others thinking to themselves subsequently "that will never last", I'll create my own because I know best. Sure you do. Not exactly a great showing of trustworthiness on their parts either. What ever happens eventually i'm sure both sets of mods will flock to the one which the community prefers. Whatever happens we'll have a space to discus BioWare games and that's what's important.

Cyonan is working to preserve the technical data in the forum, and he has a significant amount of support because we know him, we trust him, and he has been working incredibly hard to preserve what he can. That reflects the personality and effort we've come to know from him for years.

 

If that offends you, the issue doesn't lie with him.

As I initially suggested. It's not like we have any alternative but to do that at this point.

I believe Fexelea has contacted or at least made plans to contact every user that currently wants to create BSN2.0, so maybe just have a little patience to see if they will all work together at some point. I know it's a hard time and everybody puts a lot of work and energy in their own projects, but let's just see what the future brings.

I currently signed up with one board only, but I'm still eager to see what will happen with the other projects, and then maybe we can actually bring everyone together. I certainly hope so, but it will be a lot of work, and I appreciate everyone's effort to keep this going.

You can read it but unfortunately it got locked and the discussion about this has now moved over here so feel free to contact the people involved.

 

From my end I'll try to keep everyone update about my progress and I'd really like suggestions for the name of the forum... when I'm nearing completion I'll be posting a call out for the much needed positions of moderators such.

 

P.S. I'm quite aware there are other alternatives that are more or less finished and working already, best of luck guys.. it's not a competition and if the community decides to move to one of the other alternatives I'm all for it and I'll be moving with you but so far I'm still convinced my project is worth my effort and time.

No one else is looking at it this way. If you're upset that everyone isn't flocking to whatever solution you think they should use, then I tell you again: the problem lies with you.

 

People are not obligated to do what you say. And none of us is upset by your choice of whatever it is that you want to do. People in here are, in spite of what you think, cooperating across boards and being supportive of each other. There is no resentment being displayed by administrators to each other, and they are, in fact, working together.

 

Your interpretation of the situation reads a lot like you projecting your own hostility on to others. That's not what the rest of us are here for. You disapprove of people not coming to your site. Fine. You've said so, we've acknowledged that you are upset, there is no further need to keep getting upset at people. They are busy working hard to preserve information and create alternatives. I applaud their efforts, and perhaps you might want to think about a more "live and let live" philosophy, but do whatever you like. It's only a suggestion.

 

I won't address your complaint further, if you choose to press it.

I think it's great that we have a few alternatives to the BSN being developed. Thank you, all of you, for your hard work. Look Guanxii, the division was going to happen anyway. There were already multiple sites that could potentially host BSN refugees in existence. They were already in competition the second Bioware made the announcement.

Does adding a dozen more upstarts make that situation worse? Not really. Because at this point, none of us know which ones will survive long enough to rebuild the communities around Andromeda and DA4 and whatever else comes down the road. Who knows, maybe the board someone creates 6 months from now will be the killer one?

What is interesting to me in the aftermath is the clear dividing line between sites focusing on acquiring users and sites focusing on acquiring content from BSN. You can pretty cleanly divide all the contenders along that axis. Which further solidifies the idea that many of us will have to visit multiple sites to get everything we want. While it's not a great thing to have multiple sites when we are all used to only having one (kind of), it's not a bad thing either.

Dilution was inevitable. There doesn't have to be a sinister plot behind it. It's just a natural consequence of the Bioware site being a loosely connected collection of sub-communities.

A lot of people seem to be migrating to the dsn.boards, so I suppose I'll be joining too like with other sites to see how things go.

I don't know anyone well enough here so the divide is more difficult for me.
