Just checking with you guys in case I missed something. Is there some way to open chests without being a Rogue?

No. Only rogues can buy lockpicking; there are no options to bash, magically unlock, or otherwise bypass the lock.

Hopefully in a later update there's an ability to use keys and such to open chests. Either that, or I'll have to add that into the module I'll be making,
. Although it makes sense to restrict lockpicking to a certain class, it would have been nice if they implemented the Bash option out of KOTOR and NWN, with a chance of breaking an item. That way it's random as to if you'll get something out of it, and you aren't forced into missing 2/3 of chest-contained items because you don't have a Rogue in your party.

I was kind of disappointed that there was no bash option, at least for "less sturdy" chests and containers.

Yeah, this is one thing which annoys me a lot. Say I start the game with human noble origin, a warrior and then for a long time I just keep running into locked chests and doors I cannot open. You have to progress some ways into the game before you will get a rogue party member. So annoying. I can't even go back to those places anymore to loot those countless chests I missed... Not a good planning there.

in my opinion - bioware dropped the ball on this one

I'm a rogue and I still would like to bash some boxes and barrels. It's a cornerstone of rpgs. Overlord did it great. You could sweep a whole little horde through a camp trashing everything in site and hauling it all back to you.

In NWN Lockpicking seemed useless. You could just bash open everything that was locked.
Disable trap was also useless since there was a spell to handle them.
Heck that there was a spell to pretty much unlock anything as well.
I am not sure I would put points in LP if it only opened one or 2 'important side questy' chests in the game.

Im sure this will be addressed by the mod community.
(I can't wait for the tool set to drop! :-)

I personally like it. It rewards you for choosing to be a rogue. If you don't want to be one, fine -- but there will be drawbacks. Just like not being a warrior has some combat survivability drawbacks and not being a mage has some no-magic-using drawbacks. Pretty balanced, really.

and in the early game while you still can't max unlock skill due to level cap you are going to run into plenty of chests that you cant unlock even with a rogue in your party, which is utterly annoying imo.
