Duckley I will certainly be in touch!

Dai grepher those are some valid points. Ip board is a resource hog and whilst it would be the easiest migration, it would also be a costly one in the long run for a fan site as its poorly optimised. Xenforo is a good tool, but right now I have a highly customized phpbb that could receive the data so I'm trying to work with that as its already hosted and developed, so I know I can keep it online.
Our current forums have one advert for registered users, on the footer, I would hope we can keep a similar format and the plus minus should balance itself out or at least be close to break even. Developing a migration bot will be expensive in man hours though. If anyone wants to help with this let me know. I'm not sure bioware can/will share database information directly so I'm thinking we'll have to scrape.

Either way I'm willing to foot the bill as I already have server space that we can use :)

Thank you for all your hard work. This seems like a truly viable option - I only hope that we're able to salvage a good chunk of content from the BSN. I can't even wrap my head around how much meta, character analysis, etc. is going to go down the drain when they finally pull the plug... breaks my heart just thinking about it.

I'm not much help as I'm 1) not tech savvy and 2) on mobile, but I'm definitely on the cheerleading squad. ;)

Fexelea, will you have a section of your wiki for original research? That's one of the things that rules out Wikia -- we can't post builds or walkthrus or combat mechanics guides there because they are all original research.

I'm asking about the wiki proper, not the forum. Obviously, we can put any conforming content there.

Hey, has this board always had that " best answer" functionality? I don't recall ever seeing it before.

It's not like that's being enforced, though.

Edit: actually, I have no idea what the real policy is over there. It's almost like vague is OK, but specifics aren't. So posting "this combo works" is OK, but posting "talking the VS down during Priority:The Citadel II requires only 1 bar of Reputation" isn't. Yeah, not great for our purposes.

Any forum benefits from very simple posting mechanics,

even slightly more advanced posting requirements of Wikias can seriously stifle contribution.

If you can salvage even some of the information threads, you'll be doing the community a real service.  I'll come over to your site and have a look around.

Hi

Yes you can absolutely make your own pages with research, theories, lore, etc. I believe that wikis should be a collaborative effort and allow players to have brainstorming playgrounds. Our other wikis have extensive builds and lore theory sections to allow for creative writing.

Please feel free!

I somehow accidentally clicked that on my ipad... fat fingers xD

It's my objective, a complex idea but I'll do my best.

Yeah, but I don't even see what you clicked on.

It's just funny that I learn of a new feature with less than a month to go.

All I know at this point is that I'm putting an egg in each basket.

I can't help other than say I SUPPORT THIS and that I really appreciate all the hard work.

I've put the categories together - although the themes will be reworked for mobile optimization.

You can preview it here:

I'm working on the scraper - wondering how we should handle the language subforums and the user post attribution. A challenge for certain.

I was just browsing the new BioWare section.  You've been busy!  Nice work  :)

Edit:  Is it okay to make a Kaidan appreciation thread in the Mass Effect parts? ;)

Of course! I've been debating whether to move in the previous inquisition forums we had into the spoiler discussion section so there's content -

I still have lots to do in terms of setup but please feel free to post around while we wait for scraping results :)

Reputation, ranks and such features are already enabled :)

Edit 3: *sigh* I made the starter post for all 3 mass effects, 2 are awaiting approval, im for really realz going to bed now! lol

A scraper is a bot that goes through a site copying all of its contents.

Normally they are used maliciously by bad people to steal content.

In this case, it would be used for good and justice :P

Thanks for putting so much effort into this project. Having zero technical expertise myself, I can't imagine how monumental this is. At any rate, I appreciate that you are taking your time to set up the forums. I have a good feeling about the longevity of what you are setting up.  :D

And, Kaidan Fan, look forward to seeing your thread. Might have to give the ME trilogy a run through just for the Kaidan feels.

Really interested in this forum in particular.  Seeing how it's already established....well it gives me a little more confidence.  I'll join up and tell my BSN buddies about it. :)

Thank you everyone for the encouragement, I've been in touch with several people working on content rescue and it's made me very happy to see many of us care about preservation of all these useful threads.

I will be happy if I can help provide a new, long term home for players. I'm very open to suggestions ideas and certainly admin help so please feel free to contact!

Do you know if the old BSN and the Toolset wiki will be closed too? There are a lot of mods, modding tools and information that should be preserved too. :?

I haven't thought of mod hosting, although I think it is something we can do as well if needed. I can rescue blog, forum and wikiworks though so I will look into the toolset needs. Thanks for letting me know!

I went ahead and registered, looking forward to wandering on over there, i did notice though that i cannot specify a signature (States that im not authorised to do so), or have a ' in my name? (Not big issues per-se though so dont worry! Still seems like an excellent place to be and your doing some wonderful work! :D )

*Didnt see you replied to me in the other thread before i moved it, whoops! I put it back :P *

Signatures and links are reserved for members with 5+ posts. It's something we can change if deemed unnecessary, but it really helps keep spambots and overall "come check my youtube" one-posters out.

If you can find a way to save the most important of the  Dragon Age Combat/Strategy threads from the old forum-all 3 games- I'll come on board. My technical expertise is limited-other than working in a call center-but I might have the skills needed to be a mod if needed.

I've seen spambots go and meet the posting requirements if they're set pretty low. I'd suggest a limit of 25-50 posts. A bit high, but that'd require any spammer a sizable threshold to meet.

Certainly going to save everything possible - I'm talking to a few community members who are enterprising enough to have started scraping projects as well, and we're all brainstorming the best solution. I should be able to have a proper recovery tool by tomorrow.

Do not worry, worse comes to worse I will copy those threads manually, they've saved me many times over the years!

And yes we'll surely be needing moderators if many members decide to move in - please stay in touch! :)
