I started to say more, but I'll just leave it at, I'm keeping my distance.  I want people to go where they'll be happy.  Just be careful.

If that happens, I'll deal with it then. Until then I'd rather focus on the positive aspects of the concept of community. Not the in-fighting, bickering, pettiness and cattiness that plagues this lot right here.

It seems you didn't notice, I didn't direct anyone to any site in particular at all.  I only stated what I know for fact.  I have seen the person running that board in action for 6+yrs and I only advised caution.  If you don't want to heed my advice, that is purely your call.

 

I have picked a few sites to frequent.  None of them are that board.  But I'm not floating from thread to thread telling people where they should pick and in fact that was my only post warning about the board you are directing people to.

 

Leave me out of your parade, thanks.

I don't want to post old threads or PMs so I'll just give one more anecdote. After we banned her for causing drama involving a BS story asking for donations for a 'relative' 9 months ago, which she now says was 5 years ago, oops she meant 4 years ago-- and after she gave us more BS about the retribution she will wreak because she knows people within proboards personally-- she reported our forum to proboards to try to get us shut down (which didn't work). That's part of what people mean by vindictive. Then she came back as a guest asking to be unbanned even while acknowledging that she did that.
 
And she has repeatedly decided to flake and delete her account with dramatic farewell posts only to reappear shortly thereafter. Hopefully she won't do that as admin and take the whole forum with her.
 
That being said, I do not think she is a malicious person, she just has issues... so it almost feels malicious to go on about it like this. All I mean to say is, be wary with that one, including with the kind of information you provide them.
 
But good luck in any case.

A quick thought.

 

As I've been reading Expanse: Abaddon's Gate recently, it had crossed my mind that may be (just may be) the authors had slightly exaggerated the way mankind normally reacts to the big disasters, and the way they struggle with their political views and personal issues in front of the Big **** coming.  Some of you people had  just proven me wrong. Their social model is about as accurate as it can be. 

 

And for those who are not familiar with the book (which I highly recomend, along with the series, by the way) - just think a little bit of ME3. And Quarians.

Do you REALLY think that it's a nice time to fight over who owns the domain of the our-possibly-would-be-forum and who f-ed whom? I mean like now? 

3 weeks before we loose the solid place to talk over the backups and arrangements? 2 month before we loose everything?

 

Tell you what. As much as I hate this decision about taking the forums down, as much as the very thought of this place going into nowhere bleeds my heart - it's a litmus test. If we ARE the community we think we are, the one is sbout to be ruined, the one that IS worth saving at all, please STOP THAT.

Comparing this to a disaster like the quarians almost being wiped out by homicidal AI might be a bit much. But even if we were to grant that very dramatic analogy, I suspect it would still be better to do this now than to wait until after the ark-Titanic sets off on its maiden voyage. It's not like you only have 12 minutes to decide. That would just be silly.

But I have nothing to lose and nothing to gain here. I've already been settled into my preferred place of BSN exile for almost a year and I'm not here to recruit. I'm simply offering information in the form of my experience as a warning before people get themselves into something they wish they hadn't. But of course, it's everyone's own prerogative.

I only gave that personal story so Cass doesn't feel ashamed after seeing people talk about her "unstable catfishing" activities and maybe it'll lighten things for her should people agree with Maia. I like to think I turned out alright and after a year or two I quit the Zachary Quinto tumblr and had a health social life after college.

I posted so much content every day and gained thousands of followers on Twitter and Tumblr, but I was embarrassed at how much I posted. So I created an alt and told everyone that there was a rotating team of people who post content on the tumblr. But it was really just me, alone.

You seem to have turned out just fine. Funny and wacky and occasionally serious.    And, I think I read somewhere that you are a fellow member of the accountant population so you have that going for you. 

 

I really was hesitant to post what I did as I don't want to shame Cassandra Saturn. My heart broke a little when I read the recent post where she defends herself. She has a lot of hardships going on in her life and, dammit, I don't want to contribute to any pain. I'm all for redemption and second chances. I just question the long-term stability of uBSN; I don't want to see the community scatter again if things go south. At any rate, people are going to go where they feel comfortable and I wish them the best.

 

I've said my piece and I'm not going to continue going after someone who just seems to want to build a new community. I wish her and uBSN success and happiness.

If you want to be as really noble as you claim, your advised cautions should apply to any and all of the private boards floating around cyberspace right now.  People do need to be cognizant of what private information they reveal to anyone, anywhere online... that's just common sense.  I would advice everyone to be cautious with their personal information at all times while functioning on the internet.

 

BTW, if what you've been doing "almost feels malicious," it's probably coming pretty close to actually being malicious.

But I would certainly trust the admins at TSG or even the total strangers to me who have posted other alternative forums before I would trust CS.

Even when it goes without saying, don't trust total strangers either.

It is a fundamental problem that will likely doom any effort to "recreate" what the BSN is, even combining all the efforts of these splinter groups. Most people aren't going to trust random joes running amateur free forums as a replacement for BSN. They'll just move to another established forum, or elsewhere. The only people who will do this are the ones already heavily invested in the relationships they've made here. Hopefully those folks have people they can trust adminning.

I'm saying that you're making a targeted attack... and, since you suggested yourself that it "almost feels malicious" I'm confirming that, from what I can see, it is very much verging on malicious.  My advice - be careful.  We're each responsible for what we ourselves say online.

What uBSN has going for it is that a real effort has been made to make it look like this forum. That can prove incredibly important and it won't feel as jarring as going to a site with a completely different look and feel.

I don't know about the history of the person behind the forum, I've never experienced it. Yet I confess I would feel hesitant to become part of a community, putting energy into posts and interacting with other members, if there was a real chance that it could all be snatched away without notice on a whim.

Personally I find it a shame all these splinter forums have formed. It would have been nice to see an effort on a single site, where the community here could have been kept together. As it is, people are just going to the sites that their friends like.

It's worth pointing out, as I was recently reminded, that most of these sites already existed before this situation arose.
