Was it time? Was it the mage/Templar war? ... it was one year before the explosion. It was implied he was involved with the Eluvian network during it's recovery. There was the uprising at the White Spire. Maybe something with Corypheus being freed the 3-9 years earlier. Did Mythal do something?.. I am trying to figure out if there are any clues as to why then? Any ideas? ((I figure the most likely answer is "Not covered in the story" - but I'm looking for theories and ideas, since I'm pretty sure they don't come out and tell you anywhere.)

My best theory - Corypheus was a Magister, and supposedly, many of the greatest magisters were also dreamers - which if Solas was in Uthenera - perhaps Corypheus contacted Solas. Which also would explain how he got the orb.

Thus far, the very few examples we have of ancient elves waking from uthenera are on account of intruders disturbing their slumber by physically entering a place of rest.

It is possible that was Solas who decided to woke up in this age,he waited long enough for that Orb to be full of energy.

"An eclipse as Fen'Harel stirred"

Eclipse refers to the movments of  the planet, moon and sun. According to Elven legends, the Evanuris most related to the sun and the moon are Elgar'nan and Mythal respectively.

Elgar'nan is locked away by Solas and Mythal is around bonded to Flemeth. So I think Flemeth did something that caused him to wake up.

I've wondered about this myself, but haven't been able to come up with anything for a theory besides doubting that in was a coincidence.

It is hard to put a precise timescale on the events leading up to the Conclave because they are all stated to occur in 9:40.   However, if the events in Masked Empire were at the beginning of 9:40 and the explosion at the Conclave is early 9:41, then the event that led to him waking up when he did could have been Felassan failing to claim the eluvians from Briala.    From what Felassan indicated to Imshael, Fen'Harel was probably intending to wake soon anyway but it is possible he woke up sooner than intended, or acted sooner than intended with regard to his orb, because of his fears over what Briala might inadvertently do through controlling the eluvians.     The only problem with this theory is that he didn't immediately go after her.

What is also odd is that if it was a year before the explosion, at what point did he guide the Venatori to his orb?    If he just needed time to recover in order to use it, why not simply wait a bit longer after waking up?   If Mythal did something to make him awake, why didn't she make contact?    May be the orb gave some indication when it was fully charged and this awoke him.

Felassan, as his agent, was already operating around Thedas setting things up back in 9:20, so they had to be operating to some sort of set timescale, since I assume that Felassan wouldn't have randomly come awake, given he had a particular mission.   So perhaps they did effectively have some sort of celestial alarm clock in operation to show when the time was approaching when Fen'Harel had set for his return and this was simply a set number of years from the date he went to sleep.

Like I said I doubt that Solas' awakening and all the shenanigans of the Dragon age coinciding are a coincidence.  If you are right then it is likely that Mythal's timescale for her goals is being dictated by Solas' even if her goals aren't the same as his.

I wonder what Felessan was up to, and if he originally had a different goal for cultivating a relationship with Briala, or it was just chance?
