Was it time? Was it the mage/Templar war? ... it was one year before the explosion. It was implied he was involved with the Eluvian network during it's recovery. There was the uprising at the White Spire. Maybe something with Corypheus being freed the 3-9 years earlier. Did Mythal do something?.. I am trying to figure out if there are any clues as to why then? Any ideas? ((I figure the most likely answer is "Not covered in the story" - but I'm looking for theories and ideas, since I'm pretty sure they don't come out and tell you anywhere.)
My best theory - Corypheus was a Magister, and supposedly, many of the greatest magisters were also dreamers - which if Solas was in Uthenera - perhaps Corypheus contacted Solas. Which also would explain how he got the orb.
What woke Solas?

Thus far, the very few examples we have of ancient elves waking from uthenera are on account of intruders disturbing their slumber by physically entering a place of rest.

Check this Codex Entry out:- http://dragonage.wik...gent_Compendium
"An eclipse as Fen'Harel stirred"
Eclipse refers to the movments of the planet, moon and sun. According to Elven legends, the Evanuris most related to the sun and the moon are Elgar'nan and Mythal respectively.
Elgar'nan is locked away by Solas and Mythal is around bonded to Flemeth. So I think Flemeth did something that caused him to wake up.

I've wondered about this myself, but haven't been able to come up with anything for a theory besides doubting that in was a coincidence.

It is hard to put a precise timescale on the events leading up to the Conclave because they are all stated to occur in 9:40. However, if the events in Masked Empire were at the beginning of 9:40 and the explosion at the Conclave is early 9:41, then the event that led to him waking up when he did could have been Felassan failing to claim the eluvians from Briala. From what Felassan indicated to Imshael, Fen'Harel was probably intending to wake soon anyway but it is possible he woke up sooner than intended, or acted sooner than intended with regard to his orb, because of his fears over what Briala might inadvertently do through controlling the eluvians. The only problem with this theory is that he didn't immediately go after her.
What is also odd is that if it was a year before the explosion, at what point did he guide the Venatori to his orb? If he just needed time to recover in order to use it, why not simply wait a bit longer after waking up? If Mythal did something to make him awake, why didn't she make contact? May be the orb gave some indication when it was fully charged and this awoke him.
Felassan, as his agent, was already operating around Thedas setting things up back in 9:20, so they had to be operating to some sort of set timescale, since I assume that Felassan wouldn't have randomly come awake, given he had a particular mission. So perhaps they did effectively have some sort of celestial alarm clock in operation to show when the time was approaching when Fen'Harel had set for his return and this was simply a set number of years from the date he went to sleep.

Like I said I doubt that Solas' awakening and all the shenanigans of the Dragon age coinciding are a coincidence. If you are right then it is likely that Mythal's timescale for her goals is being dictated by Solas' even if her goals aren't the same as his.
I wonder what Felessan was up to, and if he originally had a different goal for cultivating a relationship with Briala, or it was just chance?

Two Dalish elves were talking about elven lore near the place where Solas was sleeping and he instantly woke up to correct them.
I choose to believe that this is true.

After thousands of years he finally had to wake up and take a leak.
1000 years' worth of morning wood. He probably had to see his doctor about that one.

Yep, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Flemeth had something to do with it...

After Hawke releases Flemeth from the amulet, she tells them that she has an "appointment to keep". Maybe she's involved?
I would agree, but if you take him to the Temple of Mythal it is clear that he did not know that Mythal had survived. He says "So Mythal yet endures" when you get to the well, and he really has no reason to be lying about his surprise. He might have suspected she was "alive" since he seems to have spent some time looking for Flemeth, but don't think it is likely that they had met in between his waking up and the inquisition going to the temple.
If she is involved then it is indirectly, which I suppose fits her M.O.

I also support the theory about Flemeth playing a part behind the scenes. Especially with the weird Sandal dialog you can get in DA2. He'll reference having nightmares about an old lady, and then if you keep clicking through his idle convos he'll say something creepy about the sky opening and all the magic coming back.
I'm pretty sure you can get these two comments straight up back to back.
Think the timeline fits; Mythal had an "appointment to keep". At the time, I thought it had something to do with Morrigan, but it's pretty clear these two hadn't seen each other in a while in DAI. So, somebody or something else, then. Solas wakes up, the DAI timeline happens, and then, what? Solas brings down the veil in DA4. Sandal pretty much called it.
Honestly I'll be fairly pissed if we don't get to see it happen.

As for what woke Solas, he reveals that he saw the Hero and Alistair light the beacon at the Tower of Ishal, as well as a few other events (such as what Val Royeaux was long ago). So he was likely wandering in the Fade as a dreamer the whole time, and observing the progress of the world as best he could from the Fade.
So when he observed Corypheus, he probably thought this was his chance to get the orb unlocked. So he woke up and contacted some of the elvhen who were also in uthenera. Those such as Abelas and the sentinels.
An alternative is that he lied when he said he awoke a year before he joined you. Perhaps he was the appointment Flemeth had to keep in DA2. Perhaps he didn't want to reveal that.

He claims he awoke a year before he joined you. If true, that means he awoke in 9:40, when things were bad and events were leading up to the Conclave.

He could have seen those as memories though.
