From what I've heard and from what I've experienced myself, the forums can become very hostile a while after a game has been released but, and this is an important but, the forums do calm down after a while and allow for friendly and constructive discussions as well as feedback. This is part of why I disagree with the notion that the Bioware forums are more hostile or toxic than other forums because the bad periods tend to always be during releases and always tend to settle down. The bad is not a constant.

Back during the release of Dragon Age: Inquisition and note this is based on my memory of the time, each forum section of the Inquisition forums became a base a specific sentiment on the game. Now, people can freely express various feelings and opinions on the game no matter what forum section they are in.

This is all true but if you are at all serious about your forums and our community you moderate with an iron hand when games come out and when things get carried away and don't worry about the people bellyaching about censorship!

Poor or non existent moderation is a part of the blame.

Oh and as far as toxic goes., i call bs for the most part.  ALL forums have a toxic element its the nature of the internet and i have yet to be on a forum that did not have bad posters, bad moments or bad situations its up to the powers that be to clean it up.  These forums are positively mild compare to some I've been on and these forums have about 100 times the good banter and info than most forums.

It's not our fault they didn't take moderation of this place seriously.

They should have spent more money or gotten a better moderation team. I'd have fired this lot already if they really are outsourced. They suck at their job.

I'm just gonna leave this here:

You are all living in an echo chamber where you are Bioware's fanbase and they've hurt you and everything that you do to hurt them back is their own fault because reasons.

At some point, you need to start taking responsibility for the things you do and stop assigning blame.

Act like adults, for f**s sake.

Yeah, I confess I'm getting a bit tired of the constant complaining, too.

Beating a dead horse, you know.

I don't see much point in reading and engaging in the threads anymore. Those news hit me like a gunshot. A krogan gunshot, no less.

To some people, though, the news were so alarming they must've felt more like a missile to the face.

We need to act like adults? Not the BioWare employees complaining about the BSN giving them mental breakdowns? Not the BioWare employees using the most transparent of lies to justify a cynical PR move? Not the former BioWare employees celebrating the demise of the only place for BioWare fans to gather to share insights, constructive criticisms and fandom?

Yes. It's total BS. Even when the ME3 ending frenzy was in full effect the over-the-top crazy people were met with opposition and ridicule here. If this place is too "toxic" for the BioWare devs to handle then I don't possibly see how other venues are better suited to them. All of the death threats were made via Twitter. All of the artwork making fun of the devs and their games is posted to Tumblr. All of the videos and infographics about how awful the ME3 ending was were shared via Facebook.

How can their delicate egos not handle the BSN but are perfectly able to handle those places?

Which Bioware employees blamed the BSN for giving them mental breakdowns? How do such people even survive in day-to-day life?

Which Bioware employees blamed the BSN for giving them mental breakdowns? How do such people even survive in day-to-day life?

https://forum.biowar...ums/?p=20412660

Reddit is my primary home now.

Basically short story for me, being on the forum was causing me stress. Reddit allows me to supplement between "work" and enjoyment naturally.

There's a variety of angles that it can come from.

Post release, as someone that works in QA, seeing the issues that I cannot help resolve weighs on me because part of me feels I've let people down.  (not the fan's fault, but is something that weighs on the mind for sure).

As someone that tried to be active in community building, it also meant not ignoring obvious transgressions.  I remember when the Cullen thread received dozens of pages of porn image links spammed into it, and I felt I couldn't ignore it and went through cleaning up the thread and banning those responsible and investigating alt accounts and the like.  I could have ignored it, but that probably would have been more mentally worse for me.  I think I went to bed around 4 AM that day.  I could have just closed/deleted the thread, but that was what the trolls wanted so I didn't want to just take the easy road out.

And maybe I need tougher skin?  I'm probably not the best judge of that.  I don't think I had soft skin, just more that my armor wasn't impregnable and for better or worse me posting somewhere was a lightning rod for people to derail threads to get my attention and vent their frustrations at me.  So in that sense given enough time it just became, if not "stressful" then certainly much less fun.

Several, including the fatso whose currently celebrating(while sitting, of course). The other former employee, Gaider, frequently complained about the BSN giving him panic attacks and such.

I swear, for as much as people talk about the BioWare fanbase being easily-triggered, safe-space-seeking, whining SJWs the BioWare devs live up to that meme much more. Especially on the Dragon Age side of things.

They just want an army of faceless drones to shower them with praise constantly while never offering any criticism. But of course they can't be honest about it.

They don't need to admit it. Just look at their social media presence. On Twitter and Facebook they only respond to praise and general questions about purchasing products and such. And on those sites you can be blocked without ever realizing it, which works out great for companies like BioWare that simply cannot handle negative feedback.

Talking about bioware getting stress from the bsn "toxcicity" and going to other more toxic venues reminds me of an ex.

During the time she and I dated 4 years ago she would get upset about me getting upset at me3mp when any and all bs in there happened. (I get passionate damn it) she would then jam her finger into the back of my kidney when concentration was most required and yell at me to calm down (because that is apparently going to make me calm)

After attempting to talk out this issue in the relationship and me offering suggestions (like wait till im not 1 shot away from dying, or a method of approach that doesnt put blood in my pee from kidney damage) she told me she was afraid of me getting too pissed... so you're picking the option guarenteed to ****** me off and not my suggestions that will not ****** me off?

I loved the Bioware of old but this is really the impression that I've received over the last few years.

I'm always kinda curious what "acting like an adult" in this situation means, tacit acceptance followed by a dignified exit I suppose.

That being said I feel like Priestly and Gaider run the risk of becoming the easily punched face for all these feels because they're the ones that decided to say something and that would be unfortunate, not least of all cuz they don't work at Bioware and couldn't have and still can't do **** to stop this even if they wanted to. I'm still judging them of course but I'm not blaming them for this.

That's all it is. Just a buzzword/talking point that's code for "dissenting opinions"

If you can't take or ignore criticism and "haters" you probably shouldn't be in the entertainment industry.

David Gaider is a salty old hag and Chris Priestly tries too hard to be witty and clever and to live up to his "evil chris" SN. Boring.

Of course, I don't hold their options against all of Bioware, they don't work there anymore. And some devs have been perfectly honest with us about their experiences, particularly Alan, who had some horrifying things said that would make him for sure want to step away from the crazy.

None of this explains the shut down, though. We've gone without moderators or devs for awhile now and done just fine. I don't think anyone comes here anymore expecting to run into Laidlaw or Weekes hanging out on the Solas thread or something.

So if I understand things rightly, the OP was basically "this forum isn't toxic!" and the second post was originally an attack on someone's appearance?

I had a mental breakdown recently. I can't really point to one thing but the incident where I snapped was that I wanted to put fresh onion on a meal and the other chef wanted them fried.

That's all it took. Something as small and inconsequential as that was the straw that broke the camel's back and put me out of action for nearly two months.

It could have been something like that with the Bioware member. The forum likely wasn't the cause of the breakdown but it could have been the thing that triggered it.

Close. I come here to read the Twitter threads. Anything else I do is just a reaction to what I see.

Gaider is the person who tweeted about writing a new DA novel, writing Fenris again and then acted like fans were lunatics when they asked about the status of that after he left Bioware. To say he has a...contentious relationship with fans is putting it mildly at best.
