Hi everyone

We have been discussing over on the other subforum how to make this transition easier for everyone. With this little corner of the internet closing, I have set up dedicated catgories for Bioware games here (theme to be improved!):

http://fextralife.com/forums/f95/

Please know I understand others are attempting similar things, and I'm happy for everyone to go where they feel best. I'm providing an option, because I've been here for so long I feel it's a bit of home. I hope some of you will join me :)

Features

  • I host these myself, they won't be shutting down and I don't be getting bored of it anytime soon.
  • We have hosted large forums for years, you can join an existing, bug-tested and reliable forum with an established track record
  • Moderation is impartial, your opinions are welcome (with civility of course). No fan will be ostracized for their choices (users from here - please let me know if you'd like to moderate!)
  • Security: We have a legally binding privacy policy so you are sure to protect your information, and all passwords are hashed and salted on creation, making them irretrievable.
  • We have reputation, ranks, notifications, bookmarks, friend and foe, and such features already implemented
  • Advertising is completely handled by us, there's one ad on the footer, you won't be seeing any malware from bad ads.
  • You can also post in several of our other forums, including Dark Souls, Witcher, TESO, Divinity, Fallout and of course off-topic
  • The account allows you to post articles to our blog, reaching all our readership
  • You get immediate editing access to all our wikis

In progress- Features

  • I am working on an import for all Bioware boards content. If you have an account at the time of import, your post can be matched to your account.
  • Preserve your post history, post count, etc.
  • Mobile redesign is in progress for the whole forum (eta end of august)

if you would like to collaborate, please join our discussion on this thread. You can also contact me directly with any thoughts, suggestions, ideas, requests or the like

Thank you everyone and hopefully we can make this transition painless!

Welcome! I hope I can begin importing soon and hopefully some posts will be ready to meet you all :)

About the symbols: Yes it's to avoid issues with registration that happen from the way several languages handle things like ' and " and the like, it can confuse the database in imaginative ways (we found out the hard way lol)

I need to fix the notification of spaces, as you need to add a _ to have spaces as well. Yay for pretty urls!

Sounds really good, OP. Thank you for the work and the info.

Looks good, too. I checked it out. I like the stability and experience.

I have a lot more to do, but it will get done! For now, everyone who wishes can create accounts and post. You will need five posts to be able to post links and set signatures, but other than that there are no specific restrictions.

I'll continue to work with other forum members to get content rescued from here so we don't all lose these valuable resources

So I have to ask: For our post history/count/etc to transfer over, do we need to make an account on this site of yours before the transfer? Or will it still do it after the transfer?

Last count, five.

(excluding Reddit and Twitter of course)

The one above is one of 2 I like the look of.

It can be done after the transfer however in order to confirm who is who if will have to happen before this board closes.

On the topic of Many different forums, I think it's a good thing, gives more options and hope for the future :)

Ah, okay. In that case I guess I'll make an account there just to be safe.

I updated the original post with a couple of notes as I saw some people were rightly worried about signing up to unknown sites

  • All passwords are hashed and salted on creation, making them irretrievable.

It's a multi-step process. Some other people have some similar stuff on the works so we are all trying to balance so we don't repeat too much work and can create reliable backups.

1. Create bot/scraper that gathers right information

2. Run a test in a smaller subforum and inspect output

3. Run a test import from small sample size into new forum to see how conversion from ip boards > html  > phpbb boards looks like

4. Confirm how user claiming will work for those who want to keep their posting history

5. If everything looks doable, commence run of larger subforums

6. Actual import

I'm currently working on step 1, which is one of the hardest as these boards are massive and we need to get the right information saved in the right format. I estimate I have another 8 hours of work. Step 2 should be 1~2 hours depending on which one we try, and 3 should follow in closely. The results of 3 will determine feasibility of the project :)

Sounds good looking forward to hearing how it turns out regardless.
