Hey everyone,

I've just started playing dragon age origins, my first time playing a dragon age game and figured I might as well make a play through of it for youtube from the perspective of a player entirely new to the series.

I've just put up part 1 of the play through today and plan on doing 2 and inquisition in future if it gets off the ground at all. Would appreciate people checking it out to let me know what they think and maybe even give some advice to a very new player, I've struggled with getting a grips with the combat system so far, mostly what kinds of tactics to use.

Thanks

Warriors are probably easier for a new player but I'm sure you will do fine.  If you're a Dual Weapons rogue I believe you want to have a lot of Dexterity.  Especially if you are a dagger user.  You can use cunning for more damage later with the Lethality talent.  I'm more combat oriented so I miss out on coercion checks.  I least that's what I seem to remember.  It's good to learn to program your companions behavior in tactics.  For example get Alistair to use shield pummel.

Thanks, I figured dex would be important as it usually is in other games but didn't know cunning would be used for damage later on. I'm still early in the game and will be posting episode 2 tomorrow so hopefully I'll be able to start cranking those stats early so I don't get caught out later on.

It's easy, the basic is

Warrior - Strength, Willpower, Constitution

Rogue - Dexterity, Cunning, Constitution

Mage - Magic, Willpower, Constitution

By this basic attribute investment, you can get pass the game with those classes, no matter what you do

Actually your instincts were good. For daggers, Dex is really the way to go.

Cunning benefits:

Damage (eventually, at higher level with the right talents)

Dex benefits:

Damage (now and forever)

Defense (like armor class in some other games)

Attack (like THACO in some other games)

A cunning build will do a bit more more damage(eventually), but at the expense of being able to hit things, and being hit.

A full on Dex build will out damage warriors and be nigh on impossible to hit with normal attacks.

But you really got off to a compromised start with your skills/talents. You went exclusively for soft skills, which are very much secondary in this game. You can't talk your way out of most fights, since you are fighting essentially mindless monsters. So much so, I would restart. But that's me.

You need to focus totally on combat skills for several levels to bring balance back to your character.

SkillsCombat training!. This is critical. Without points in this. You can't take ANY weapon skills at all.  You should really max this at every opportunity until you have 3 ranks.  Extra Note: You don't get more points in this every level.  Bioware either should have made this first in this list or just eliminated it. Without it, you are borked. .

Talents: Build out your dual weapon tree, almost exclusively for a while. Skip the middle line in the tree, it is the least useful. What you want is Momentum: This is THE dual weapon talent.

Attributes: at Minimum eventually you need:

Dex: 36 for max rank dual weapon talents.

Str: 20 to wear the appropriate armor

Cun: 22 for the max rank in skills/talents

You are ahead on cunning, behind on the others, especially Dex.

Sorry but in game Lets Play videos, players don't talk while in video scenes and while characters in game are talking, because it's annoying, players only making comments after such scenes.

I have to disagree unfortunately ,whilst it may be your personal preference that they don't many popular lets players I watch speak during such scenes, I'll post a video by TheSw1tcher, a channel with currently 618,000 subscribers, released just today in which they do it from the start.

I do however understand that the subtitles for this game are particularly small and appreciate the feedback. I will try and make sure that people can follow the ingame conversations whilst I play in future.

No offense but isn't this kind of pointless since the forums are gonna close on the 26?

No offense taken :)

And I don't think so I've already gotten a bunch of advice I hadn't known before, the need for combat training, the importance of dex and apparently the usefullness of pick pocketing.

The point was to gain information that'll help me improve at playing the game and from replies so far I've gotten it.

Pickpocketing can give you some valuable hardware.  Some obnoxious people have great stuff.
