Secondary benefit of making games better isn't always for the better. I personally believe devs just need to be talented and do their own thing if their vision is strong enough. Playing the numbers game and trying please everyone is what leads to everyone not being pleased.

You must not have seen the vitriol dripping from my post and dissolving the floor beneath. I have despised the "BSN fanbase" (whatever that is) for hijacking the creative vision of the developers to begin with. The insecure narcissism of demanding that every game, every story, look just like me and the world as I would have it disgusts me.
I may be projecting my own sensibilities onto Bioware, but I still believe that some of the motivation for dissolving the forums is to lessen the impact of those with a misplaced sense of propriety surrounding their games. It's the only chance they have of regaining my business, at any rate.

They won't. Not with EA in charge and their ability to upload player feedback option, among other things. EA is to big of a company with too much money on the line & greedy to leave anything to chance.

Try to please everyone, and you please no one. This is especially true as the demands become more granular and exacting. There may be some room to maneuver within a coherent artistic direction, but handing the whole thing over to the audience wouldn't work. And it wouldn't work even if the audience wasn't as diverse as Bioware consumers.
I think that, ultimately, the quality of the game has to be trusted to grab the players, not nitpicky fanservice that moves in too many directions at once. There may be a consensus among players on a few things (hair mechanics), bit the people making the game have to maintain a consistent vision of their work.
I think they lost sight of it in the Mass Effect series, and I think part of the problem was being overwhelmed by the vocal groups of fans whose complaints were too specific to be compatible with general vision.
And I still suspect that at least part of the BSN dissolution has to do with the hope that some of the most critical elements will lose cohesion and influence.

I actually agree with you btw. I've seen enough games get redirected by "fans" who think they know better than the developers what a game should be. Devs should stick to their original vision, and if fans don't like it, they can go be fans of something else.
Taking feedback is important, of course, but there's a line when it crosses over to pandering.

I agree with you. The business end of it requires a certain level of response. I just think Bioware has lost that balance. Back to Baldur's Gate with everyone!

Agreed Tantum. But that only works if the direction Bioware decides to take MEA is a positive one for it's core fanbase, not the weird place it seems to be heading. That and good old fashioned EA mediocrity. I doubt you've played many EA games, but I can tell you from experience, they have all been getting worse these past few years and Bioware's franchises have been no different. I posted this in another thread, but that "make more money by making a lesser product" attitude EA has is what will ruin most of their games, including Mass Effect. Bottom line is mediocrity sells in this day and age and rather than it being about how good you can make a game, it's more about how bad you can get away with making it and still be profitable...
As for the Cassandra Saturn thing, let me blunt. If everyone tells you that jumping off a cliff is a bad idea, do you think, "well, I should try it for myself. Maybe it won't be so bad..."?. Of course you f****** don't, you listen to the consensus, the most obvious opinion. I get that people on the outside can look at this place and think it's just people venting personal grudges, but when you have a wide range of different people from different groups in this forum all unanimously saying that joining the CS forum is a bad idea, then maybe you should give us the benefit of the doubt? Just be happy that nothing worse came from it and that it closed before something more serious happened...

And now this brings me back to that ancient riddle: "how many different colored endings does it take to make a quality game?"
Answer:
It looks like I'm Sphinx food, because I can't, for the life of me, remember the answer.
