This thread makes me strangely happy. Normally, I'd be vaguely annoyed, knowing it was claiming space on the front page of the forum. Knowing this all coming to an end, though, it's oddly satisfying to see at least one more asinine RC bait thread.

It does make you all warm and fuzzy, doesn't it.

The point is that punching someone in a video game is a valid tool to portray things, be it anger or whatever else.

The fact that punching a single female reporter in a game full of enemies to kill, electrocute and blow to pieces is even noteworthy (you can punch others in various cutscenes as well, only they are not female, so that's okay, right?) is just another example of the soft bigotry of low expectations.

Mass Effect isn't GTA. I would have no problem with it if its like Skyrim and the rest of C-Sec would try to take you down if you tried to harm her. But she is the only character in the trilogy who was created solely for that reason, while I appreciate that I have a choice of handling her but I don't need to constantly punch her to make a point.

This is a game where the PC can do all sorts of terrible things to enemies, allies, and innocent bystanders. I can slaughter an entire colony of people because it was more convenient that using the grenades that will just put them to sleep.

So why are people up in arms about a single reporter being punched? Because she's a Woman?

You are punching her because she's a nosy woman who have an option to get punched in a renegade interrupt. In fact in all scenes that lead up to punching her was few seconds after opening her mouth. I wouldn't notice it if I could do the same with others and I have as Sith Warrior and Sith Inquisitor where I could threaten to choke or torture anyone with lightning to get the things I want and nobody is singled out.

Its not about being SJW, I am a brown asian girl with an arabic name who don't wear a veil and are just as opinionated as Khalisah. So yes, I do want to know exactly how people try to justify some random dude who think a girl like Khalisah and me need a painful lesson to shut her own mouth with his fist. And all I'm hearing right now was justifications of it being a harmless game simulation and a form of self-gratification.. especially when its a situation where the assailant don't suffer any real consequences for his actions and the victim was blamed for it because she deserved it. And the fact that when provided with such option, one would choose to hit her because it make one feel happy... .... .... ... ....

So yes, I want to understand that attitude because it was baffling as well when it does happen for real.

So, no fighting words with words? I've only ever fought in self defence, it's always ended with them on the ground and me asking them if maybe we should never ever do that again, and they tend to agree eagerly.

Throwing the first punch on a jerk just seems to imply your own arguments are weak and you choose to change the rules of engagement in desperation.

Also, I did edknowledge that there are insane, unstable and even violent women out there.

Just because there is a high road does not mean that player choice should be taken out of the equation. You have the option to outsmart her and make her look like an idiot. You have the option to just turn and walk away. With Conrad you also have the choice to tell him to go back to his wife and kids which he does until the next game.

She is there as an annoyance and a recurring joke. And it would be a very sad day when you can only respond in RPG games according to the latest and most politically correct code of conduct out of whatever hole in the ground those things come from.

RPGs are there for to allow playing a variety of character types, not just the nice ones.

The game is not about you, and that NPC is not there to portray you. The discussion is not about your skin color or what you are wearing.

(I couldn't care less really)

That said, the fact that out of everyone else you choose to identify with the annoying reporter who cherry picks quotes and twists facts according to what would be the most clickbaity and destructive should tell you something about yourself.

This not a bait is it?

Nah. That's the BSN, no one posts baits here.

OP is joking right? There's no way this isn't a joke thread. I always punch the reporter, she's a ****** and it's hilarious. I love when I get to be an ******* in RPGs, something that Bioware stopped doing because they'd rather wanna cater to SJWs.

I bet you wouldn't complain if the reporter was a man and you were femshep.

By your logic, we shouldn't have guns or biotics of any kind in the game:

Shooting people (women included) = A-okay!

Punching people (women included) = YOU GO TO HELL MISOGYNISTS!

Now I hope we DO get to punch a female reporter in MEA. Keyword is OPTIONAL, you don't HAVE to do it.

LOL,my thoughts exactly........ironically the OP is no different to the reporter in the game, there to provoke, sensationalise, dramatise and create click-bait.

I did not like M!Shep punching that defenseless reporter woman. It was probably the most disgusting thing in the original trilogy.

Yeah, you don't have to do it, but because it's was renegade interrupt (if I remember correctly) you had no way to know what was going to happen. I guess the only good thing about that is that it lets you roleplay Shep who is clearly anti-hero (though it's not like this action actually has any negative consequences in the game whatsoever...)

Assuming the OP is serious...

Violence against women (and men) is a horrible problem in real life, but this is a video

game where punching the reporter is a player choise. Also, her gender is pretty much

irrelevant and the games never make a point of it.

What I'd actually like to know is how many players attack al-Jilani during their canon

playthrough. I understand if you're not taking it too seriously. However, if you like to think

Shepard is a professional, how could he possibly physically attack a reporter on LIVE

BROADCAST? What, the most prominent human in the galaxy can't handle the press

and apparently has no self-control to speak of? Punching her is simply an utterly idiotic

thing for Shepard to do.

Then again, all that is part of the reason the scene is so hilarious. Even a person like

Donald Trump would never do that. So I think those moments are there to offer some

dark humor and should not be seen as condoning violence against women.

Trolling or not, that's how you push a false narrative, repeat the lie enough times, and people will start treating it as truth.

The internet is one giant example of this practice after all.

It sums up the forums these day's,this thread represents one of the key reasons why the forums are being shut down (in my opinion). Four pages debating Mass Effect and beating women,it's all out of context, agenda driven and mindless.

That's what real moderators are needed for. Trolling cannot be judged objectively, so a moderator has to be subjective, otherwise first page will be filled with black/blonde/brunette/pink hair romance threads. Because "Maybe they aren't trolling. Maybe they legitimately want to bang hair. Why not let people discuss it?".

Also remember the Lair of the shadowbroker DLC:

In the video archive you can find a whole series of videos were she is getting punched (and even tasered) during her interviews so it clearly shows her journalistic approach is not appreciated (I even think there is one were she gets leveled by a Krogan so it shows she isn't the brightest bulb in the shed either).

I believe there is a video were you see her being comforted by an Asari.

Yes,real Moderators are always required,Bioware only have themselves to blame for the state of these forums, their garden has been left to go wild, gender politics, mindless game speculation and unreasonable demands have all contributed to tainting what should be a mecca for Bioware fans.......shame.

Not really.

That is totally sexist RagingCalgarian.  You think beating on a defenseless woman is far worse than beating on a defenseless man.  That's clear-cut sexism.  That's pretty much the definition of sexism actually.  The real problem is the "defenseless" part, not the gender in question.

But even then, I don't see a problem with having it in a video game.  Games are not reality, and allow you to do things that would be unacceptable or even criminal in real-life.  That doesn't mean you're going to go out in real life and start beating on every defenseless person you see!
