Will the BSN Projects, Blogs, DAO Toolset and wiki close too?

Does this title make what we need answers to a little clearer?

And since giftfish already explained...

Due to the impending closure of both these forums and the old BSN, the BioWare player community is about to lose access to a wealth of information.

So far, preservation efforts seem to be focused on building a new forum community, which is fine. However, my personal, primary concern right now is the preservation of the following:

  • Blogs -- Many old blogs contain a huge amount of information about game mechanics, character customization, and more.
  • Projects -- There are at least 8340 projects (mods) hosted on BSN. Many of these were never moved to Nexusmods or ModDB and cannot be found anywhere else. Come October, they will cease to exist.
  • Specific Forum Posts -- There are a slew of forum posts that act as "project pages", in addition to an abundance of information on game mechanics and modding.
Currently there's a thread on ME3Explorer OT section where we're discussing options as to what can be done. I encourage anyone interested in helping to drop in and participate in the discussion. I'm willing to set up a new forum section on the ThaneMOD forum, a Google Doc, a WordPress, coordinate with Nexusmods, or whatever we determine needs to be done to best preserve this content.

BioWare's DAO Toolset & Wiki
I'm going to link to my post in the other thread, b/c this is a major issue that the community needs an answer about. If BW is considering actually *removing* access to this content, it also needs to be preserved.

EDIT -- I'm assuming closure of the forums includes blogs and project hosting. If it doesn't, it would be very good for BW to communicate this to the community.

I know I'm probably wasting my breath, but I'd like to point out that this topic is NOT about simply discussing the closure or finding alternatives. This topic is trying to seek more information on whether the above mentioned places will also be closed along with the forums.

No kidding. This is ridiculous, BioWare.

We're asking about 4 things. Actually 5:

1. DAO Toolset (your product)

2. DAO Wiki (your product)

3. Projects

4. Blogs

5. DLC/Patch downloads for pre-Origin games (your products)

All of these are currently linked to the Legacy BSN site. As your customers, we'd appreciate an explanation of what's going to happen to these resources.

My original thread that you just locked has nothing to do with establishing a new forum community on a 3rd party site. It has everything to do with trying to get information about what's happening with the above content.

Actually the DLC/patch downloads for pre-Origin games might be one of the easiest things for us to potentially back up. I'm guessing you mean the part of the BSN that you get to via Profile/My Games - Your Registered game content? Most of those don't require extra information or the pages that go with them, just the downloads themselves.

However you mentioned patches and I don't see those there, so you must be referring to another part of the site that I'm unfamiliar with (I know I myself have a number of the old patches saved around simply because I'm a digital packrat who doesn't delete things). Could you share the address for the page with the patches?

Id like to see some more information about this as well, since IMHO this is the biggest issue with the closing of the BSN.

It's been a frustrating couple of days trying to understand if the Project site is gone with the forums or not. I'm currently backingup anything not found anywhere else just in case. My DA:O was bought on Steam and not Origin, through many years ago, so all the extra content I have to download from the Project website. Well  now I have about four copies of everything just in case >.<

To be on the safe side: Download everything from the project site just in case. If the 26th rolls around and it's still there, no worries. But if not...

I don't understand. The blogs and DLCs don't seem to be a part of the forums at all.

It's part of this website- if you look at the lower left hand corner of the forums you see a link called Legacy Bioware SocialNetwork... that will be going along with the forums (unless otherwise confirmed not).

I have started to upload DA mods --which are with 100% certainty only available on the BSN/project sites-- to Nexus, to rescue them from being nuked to the orbit disappearing forever.

http://www.nexusmods...age/mods/4487/?

I know it is a grey area, but since the original author (in this case tmp7704) isn't around anymore here (and hasn't been for years) I have no means to ask him for permission for uploading it to Nexus. Hopefully a big fat disclaimer of not being the creator of this mod suffices to keep it and other mods accessible for everyone to use in the future.

Does anyone mind archiving this? It's a very old post of mine that has a list of PC bug fix mods for Awakening from Nexus.

Since it's just one post it's much easier to archive than anything else. I popped it into the Wayback Machine here: http://web.archive.o...r-pc-awakening/ Repost or save that link somewhere else (that preferably isn't closing) where you can find it easily.

Alternatively since it is one post, quote/edit it and repost it in any of the new forums of your choice.

Being part of the forums it should also automatically be included in any of the large archiving efforts currently going on :)

I've already been in contact with an  Admin at Nexus- please do not upload anything there right now. We're in a state of flux and I already have the backups. Please review the forum post on the Nexus website, thank you. https://forums.nexus...-could-be-lost/

Tarshana and I are communicating with Nexus, trying to find a way forward.

Be very careful with what you upload. Nexus isn't tolerant of uploading without author permission, in general, and it can get you banned. They're aware of what's happening, and I've also been clear that there was no permissions system in place for BSN mods, so authors generally didn't include anything about it, unless they happened to in their readme (if there is a readme).

If anyone does go ahead and upload despite this, please do a thorough search on Nexus first, to be certain the mod isn't already hosted there. The last thing we need is to end up with duplicate mods. Also, please include at least one image for the mod.
